    Heldenpolitik: Ritterkreuz, Ideology and the Complexities of Hero Culture under National Socialism By Colin Gilmour A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2018 Department of History and Classical Studies McGill University Montreal, Quebec ©Colin Gilmour 2018 i Abstract This dissertation explores the political history of Germany’s highest award for military excellence during the Second World War: the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, or “Ritterkreuz.” Expanding upon a limited foundation of existing scholarly research, its primary focus is to examine the role played by this famous medal as a vessel of “symbolic capital” for the National Socialist regime. Designed not only as a tool to help forge a new archetype for military heroism, it was also to represent the “revolution” that the Party claimed to have produced in German society and politics. Using this function as a framework, the component chapters of this study document different ways in which it informed or affected official usages of the Ritterkreuz and the activities of its recipients – called “Ritterkreuzträger” – during the war years. Through this investigation, the dissertation argues that while achieving an impact on wartime culture that continues to be felt in Germany today, both medal and men proved as much a source of frustration and embarrassment to the regime as they did ideological success. The British conduct of the Battle of Villers-Bocage has been controversial, because their withdrawal marked the end of the post D-Day "scramble for ground" and the start of an attritional battle for Caen.

(Photo by Roger Viollet/Getty Images) The Tiger I and II are arguably the most famous tanks of World War II, if not the most famous tanks in the entire history of armoured warfare. The Tiger I was, perhaps surprisingly for a tank which achieved such a reputation, quickly designed utilising components that had been partially tested in previous heavy Panzers. The need for a new and better-armoured heavy tank that would be successful in combating British tanks and anti-tank guns had become increasingly evident to the Germans in the first years of the war. Underlining the need for an improved tank, the Soviet T-34 medium tank, encountered after the Nazi invasion of Russia on 22 June 1941, shocked the Germans with its thick, sloped skin, excellent mobility, and powerful armament. Following the appearance of the T-34 and the heavy Soviet KV-1, the design and production of an effective heavy Panzer was pursued with increased urgency. By the time the first models rolled off the production line in August 1942, the Tiger I featured extremely thick armour, providing it with what was at that time a formidable level of battlefield survivability. It also mounted a powerful long-barrelled 8.8cm gun that could at normal combat ranges defeat virtually every enemy tank then in existence. At this point in the war, the Allies had almost no experience with amphibious operations and it was a risky undertaking to carry out such an immense operation covering multiple landings over 600 miles apart. Even more amazing was the fact that part of the invasion forces was to depart from the United States, 6,000 miles away. As the orders were not confirmed until a month before Operation ‘Torch’ was launched, there was very little time to organise such a logistically complex operation involving American and British forces, and even less time for the pro-Allied French to organise more than small measures of support. There were two landings in the Mediterranean, at three main points near Algiers and three near Oran, and three landings on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. There, the main landing came ashore at Fédala, 18 miles north-east of Casablanca, and the armour was brought ashore at Safi, 140 miles south-east.
