Paul Hausser's book Waffen- SS in Action (Waffen-SS im Einsatz) was the first major work by one of the HIAG leaders. It had an unmistakable connection to the Nazi origins of the Waffen-SS: the SS runes on the cover art and the SS motto ("My honour is called loyalty") embossed on the cloth. The runic insignia of the Schutzstaffel were used from the s to on Schutzstaffel flags, uniforms and other items as symbols of various aspects of Nazi ideology and Germanic mysticism. They also represented virtues seen as desirable in SS members, and were based on völkisch mystic Guido von List's Armanen. Also, when the 1st SS PzK was created in , it gave birth to a new insignia: two keys in a shield with oak leaves. As a graphic designer myself, I find the divisional insignia of Waffen-SS divisions interesting from a design point-of-view. The often told story behind the LAH key insignia is fascinating: it was simply a wordplay turned visual (the word Dietrich in German translates roughly to lockpick or skeleton key):). SS-VT regiments played a pre-war role in the Anschluss with Austria, the occupation of the Sudetenland and the invasion of Czechoslovakia. • Heldenpolitik: Ritterkreuz, Ideology and the Complexities of Hero Culture Under National Socialism
Heldenpolitik: Ritterkreuz, Ideology and the Complexities of Hero Culture under National Socialism By Colin Gilmour A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2018 Department of History and Classical Studies McGill University Montreal, Quebec ©Colin Gilmour 2018 i Abstract This dissertation explores the political history of Germany’s highest award for military excellence during the Second World War: the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, or “Ritterkreuz.” Expanding upon a limited foundation of existing scholarly research, its primary focus is to examine the role played by this famous medal as a vessel of “symbolic capital” for the National Socialist regime. Designed not only as a tool to help forge a new archetype for military heroism, it was also to represent the “revolution” that the Party claimed to have produced in German society and politics. Using this function as a framework, the component chapters of this study document different ways in which it informed or affected official usages of the Ritterkreuz and the activities of its recipients – called “Ritterkreuzträger” – during the war years. Through this investigation, the dissertation argues that while achieving an impact on wartime culture that continues to be felt in Germany today, both medal and men proved as much a source of frustration and embarrassment to the regime as they did ideological success. As such, it challenges several existing assumptions regarding the role of orders and decorations created by National Socialism while highlighting an underrecognized layer of complexity in its “Heldenpolitik” (Hero Politics). ii Résumé Cette thèse explore l'histoire politique de la plus haute distinction militaire accordée en Allemagne durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la croix de chevalier de la croix de fer, la « Ritterkreuz ».

Normandy landings American Sector. The battle was the result of a British attempt to improve their position by exploiting a gap in the German defences west of the city of Caen. After one day of fighting in and around Villers-Bocage Through the Lens small town of Villers- Bocage and a second day defending a position outside the town, the British force retreated. The Allies and the Germans regarded control of Caen as vital to the Normandy battle. Seizing the opportunity to bypass the German Panzer-Lehr Division blocking the direct route south in the area of Tilly-sur-Seulles, a mixed force of tanks, infantry and artillery, based on the 22nd Armoured Brigade of the 7th Armoured Divisionadvanced through the gap in a flanking manoeuvre towards Villers-Bocage. British commanders hoped that the Villers-Bocage Through the Lens of a strong force in their rear would force the Panzer-Lehr Division to withdraw or be surrounded. After six hours, Hinde ordered a withdrawal to a more defensible position on a knoll west of Villers-Bocage. The next day the Germans attacked the brigade box, arranged for all-round defence, in the Battle of the Island. The British inflicted a costly repulse on the Germans and then retired from the salient. The British conduct of the Battle of Villers-Bocage has been controversial, because their withdrawal marked the end of the post D-Day "scramble for ground" and the start of an attritional battle for Caen.

  • Tiger Tank, to Be Ready for Production in February 1943
CONTENTS Introduction Chronology Design and Development Technical Specifications Crew Training and Organisation Tigers vs Allied Armour Conclusion Glossary and Abbreviations INTRODUCTION Tigers on the Eastern Front, between Bielgorod and Orel, July 1943. (Photo by Roger Viollet/Getty Images) The Tiger I and II are arguably the most famous tanks of World War II, if not the most famous tanks in the entire history of armoured warfare. The Tiger I was, perhaps surprisingly for a tank which achieved such a reputation, quickly designed utilising components that had been partially tested in previous heavy Panzers. The need for a new and better-armoured heavy tank that would be successful in combating British tanks and anti-tank guns had become increasingly evident to the Germans in the first years of the war. Underlining the need for an improved tank, the Soviet T-34 medium tank, encountered after the Nazi invasion of Russia on 22 June 1941, shocked the Germans with its thick, sloped skin, excellent mobility, and powerful armament. Following the appearance of the T-34 and the heavy Soviet KV-1, the design and production of an effective heavy Panzer was pursued with increased urgency. By the time the first models rolled off the production line in August 1942, the Tiger I featured extremely thick armour, providing it with what was at that time a formidable level of battlefield survivability. It also mounted a powerful long-barrelled 8.8cm gun that could at normal combat ranges defeat virtually every enemy tank then in existence. The launch of Tiger II production in January 1944 allowed the deployment of the most powerful combat tank during the war.

  • Colour Brochure 2011 1St Edition.Qxd
AAFFTTEERR TTHHEE BBAATTTTLLEE NEW TITLE PUBLISHED JUNE 2019 In 2012 Jean Paul Pallud wrote the After the Battle account of the Desert War; now he completes the story with detailed coverage of JEAN PAUL PALLUD the landings of Operation ‘Torch’ in North-West Africa in November 1942. When the western Allies decided to launch a second front in North Africa, they carefully considered the anti-British feeling left in France by the ill-advised attack by the Royal Navy on the French Fleet at Mers el Kébir in July 1940. Consequently, the operation was given an American rather than a British complexion, General Eisenhower was chosen to lead a mostly American force into battle and the major Royal Navy contribution was kept as inconspicuous as possible. At this point in the war, the Allies had almost no experience with amphibious operations and it was a risky undertaking to carry out such an immense operation covering multiple landings over 600 miles apart. Even more amazing was the fact that part of the invasion forces was to depart from the United States, 6,000 miles away. As the orders were not confirmed until a month before Operation ‘Torch’ was launched, there was very little time to organise such a logistically complex operation involving American and British forces, and even less time for the pro-Allied French to organise more than small measures of support. There were two landings in the Mediterranean, at three main points near Algiers and three near Oran, and three landings on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. There, the main landing came ashore at Fédala, 18 miles north-east of Casablanca, and the armour was brought ashore at Safi, 140 miles south-east.

A design solution had to be found for this too. The efforts made by the materials procurement offices and workshops, from the pattern makers and metal workers to the machining departments, and the personal sacrifices of the engineers and workers could provide the material for a small book. To the young men of today it may seem unbelievable that those young tank soldiers, who faced death every day, indeed every hour, nevertheless found time for humor, fun and games, as is revealed in the accounts contained in this chronicle. The testing of both tanks progressed satisfactorily in spite of some minor problems. On 6 February Aders described his work: "There was great consternation in July when it was discovered that the Russian Army was equipped with the T 34 and even heavier tanks which were superior to anything the Wehrmacht could field against them.
