    Entre gauchos y gringos. Costumbres nacionales y extranjeras en Santa Fe (1880-1900) (*) os llamados proyectistas de la organización nacional –como Juan B. FOLKLOREAlberdi y Domingo F. Sarmiento–, que a mediados del siglo XIX plantearon la necesidad de fomentar la inmigración europea, lo hicieron, como es sabido, no sólo para poblar el país desierto, sino también a fin de generar un cambio de costumbres en la población, a través de una modificación sustancial en su composición. Para Alberdi, la “planta de la civilización” prendía “de gajo”, y debía ser traída de Europa por medio de la inmigración (1). Se trataba, en verdad, de “alterar la estructura demográfica, social y cultural del país” (2), ya que “era necesario ‘europeizar’ a la población argentina, producir una ‘regeneración de razas’”. El desprecio por los tipos sociales autóctonos, el gaucho y el indio, generó el deseo de ver trasplantadas a estas tierras las pautas culturales –además de los rasgos raciales– de otros pueblos, considerados más civilizados. Por ello, en ese momento lo “extranjero”, consideradoTRADICIONES como lo “otro”, lo “inasimilable”, lo “extraño”, lo “bárbaro”, estaba más representado por el gaucho o el indio, que por los llegados a través de la inmigración de ultramar, y que fueron considerados portadores de “civilidad” y “civismo”. En relación con este marco de ideas, en este trabajo se analizan comportamientos puestos de manifiesto por las élites políticas e intelectuales de la provincia de Santa Fe en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, años en que el gobierno provincial estuvo en manos del autonomismo en sus distintas versiones (iriondismo, galvismo, leivismo), en tanto que el liberalismo, el civismo y el radicalismo desarrollaron su accionar opositor.

Costumbres nacionales y extranjeras en Santa Fe (1880-1900) MARÍA GABRIELA MICHELETTI CONICET / IDEHESI [email protected] RESUMEN La política de fomento inmigratorio impulsada en la Argentina a partir de mediados del siglo XIX incluyó, entre sus objetivos, el de generar un cambio de costumbres en la población nativa. En este artículo, además de describirse la realidad resultante como conse- cuencia de la incorporación de pautas culturales foráneas, se analizan –desde un recorte espacial santafesino centrado en las dos últimas décadas del siglo XIX– comportamientos puestos de manifiesto por las élites políticas e intelec- tuales de la provincia con respecto a las costumbres nacionales y extranjeras. Lo que se busca es evaluar si dichos comportamientos pudieron encontrarse condicionados por las diferentes adscripciones político-ideológicas y/o por las variantes circunstancias históricas.
