The problem is analysed primarily from the perspective of student activism in the twentieth century. The development is viewed in the context of nationalism, (cultural) modernism, and radicalism in the development of the public sphere. The main source consists of the research findings of the student magazine Ylioppilaslehti (Student Magazine), which is not just “any student paper,” but a Finnish institution that has seen most of Finland’s cultural and political elite pass through its editorial staff in the twentieth century. The article demonstrates the importance of German idealism, as theorised by the Finnish statesman and philosopher J.W. Snellman, and its vital role in the activities of the Finnish university intelligentsia well into the 21st century. 3 INTELLECTUALS AND THE STATE: FINNISH UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENTSIA AND ITS GERMAN IDEALISM TRADITION INTRODUCTION In 2013, there has been quite a fuss around Finnish philosopher Pekka Himanen in the Finnish public sphere. Tyndale's Death in Holland. King Henry sent Sir Thomas Elyot to the Continent to drag Tyndale to England, and for a time the Reformer / wandered about in Germany to elude his pursuers, but later he again settled in Antwerp. In 1534 he reissued the Pen tateuch and the revised second edition of the New Testa ment-"Tyndale's noblest monument." The prologues and glosses "have to a considerable extent been translated from the German of Luther." In 1535 Tyndale prepared yet another edition of the New Testament, with headings to chapters of the Gospels and the Acts, but without the marginal notes. It was a crime in any Englishman to sell, buy, or read a copy of the New Testament in his native tongue. A change was coming. Richard Herman, a mer chant adventurer of Antwerp, was imprisoned for his ''help to the setting forth of the New Tes tam en t in English.'' He appealed to Anne Boleyn, now Queen of Henry VIII, and in a letter to Thomas Cromwell she requested the release of the prisoner. -

A recent publication — Nicholas Ostler’s Empires of the Word (2005) — presents itself in its subtitle as A Language History of the World. Understandably, it deals extensively with what it calls “world languages”, languages which play or have played important roles in world history. An introductory chapter addresses, already in its title, the question “what it takes to be a world language”. The title also provides a provisional answer, viz. “you never can tell”, but the discussion goes beyond mere despair. It opposes the “pernicious belief” which finds expression in a quote from J. R. Firth, a leading British linguist of the mid-twentieth century (p. 20): “World powers make world languages [...] Men who have strong feelings directed towards the world and its affairs have done most. What the humble prophets of linguistic unity would have done without Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English, it it difficult to imagine. Statesmen, soldiers, sailors, and missionaries, men of action, men of strong feelings have made world languages. They are built on blood, money, sinews, and suffering in the pursuit of power.” Ostler is of the opinion that this belief does not stand up to criticism: “As soon as the careers of languages are seriously studied — even the ‘Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English’ that Firth explicitly mentions as examples — it becomes clear that this self-indulgently tough-minded view is no guide at all to what really makes a language capable of spreading.” He continues on the following page (p. -

Katherine Acheson gave essential advice on the introduction. 4 Introduction From the beginning of the Reformation in 1517, philology was a crucial element of Protestant thought. Sola scriptura, “the scripture alone” was a Reformation slogan, and the nature of that scripture was defined in philological terms. Luther used Erasmus’s edition of the Greek New Testament with a revised Latin translation in an effort to reach the sources of biblical thought. When Luther understood the original languages well enough, he translated the text into German for the common reader. William Tyndale followed his example in English, laying the foundations for most of our King James Version. -

From the Tito-Stalin Split to Yugoslavia's Finnish Connection: Neutralism Before Non-Alignment, 1948-1958

Lampe Department of History After the Second World War the European continent stood divided between two clearly defined and competing systems of government, economic and social progress. Historians have repeatedly analyzed the formation of the Soviet bloc in the east, the subsequent superpower confrontation, and the resulting rise of Euro-Atlantic interconnection in the west. This dissertation provides a new view of how two borderlands steered clear of absorption into the Soviet bloc. It addresses the foreign relations of Yugoslavia and Finland with the Soviet Union and with each other between 1948 and 1958. Narrated here are their separate yet comparable and, to some extent, coordinated contests with the Soviet Union. Ending the presumed partnership with the Soviet Union, the Tito-Stalin split of 1948 launched Yugoslavia on a search for an alternative foreign policy, one that previously began before the split and helped to provoke it. After the split that search turned to avoiding violent conflict with the Soviet Union while creating alternative international partnerships to help the Communist state to survive in difficult postwar conditions. Finnish-Soviet relations between 1944 and 1948 showed the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry that in order to avoid invasion, it would have to demonstrate a commitment to minimizing security risks to the Soviet Union along its European political border and to not interfering in the Soviet domination of domestic politics elsewhere in Eastern Europe. -

Thus, the first question must be what is or constitutes such a conceptual system, and the second, which fields of knowledge does this conceptual system create in the process of historical and geographical diffusion. In addition, the sec- ond question must also address the processes of diffusion and how the modes of knowledge are communicated. The basic tenet of Buddhism is the idea of impermanence, relativity and the philosophical premise that nothing is absolute and eternal: existence is an everlast- ing flux, and each entity is dependent on another. -

David Keep, “Is not Tyndale also among the Prophets?” Epworth Review 14.2 (May 1987): 57-63. Is not Tyndale also among the Prophets?* David Keep [p.57] This article portrays Tyndale, in both churchmanship and doctrine, as a radical in the tradition of the Lollards. WILLIAM TYNDALE has been for four hundred and fifty years the chief martyr of the early English reformation and the hero of missionary translators. The flames which consumed his body outside the Imperial castle at Vilvorde were a lamp not only to the King of England but to a biblical protestantism which was to spread by leaps and bounds and come near to world conquest. Of Tyndale’s life we know little: the four hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his death could be the half-millennium of his birth somewhere on the banks of the Severn in Gloucestershire. We have glimpses of his life and work in Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, London, probably at Wittenberg and in the cities of the Rhine and Flanders.1 The man himself eludes us apart from his urgent pen translating so far as he could from the original and, where he could not, cribbing from Luther. It is as the English Luther that his nineteenth-century admirers were inclined to hail him: one of the great losses to the English church; his work is given a prominent place in Quentin Skinner’s monumental study of the development of political thought in which he gives full weight to the meetings at The White Horse. ‘Tyndale was only one amongst a considerable group of young Cambridge scholars who were attracted in a similar way from humanism to the Lutheran church.’2 I want to suggest in this paper that this is not strictly correct; that Tyndale’s attitude to the authority of scripture and the state was distinct from that of Luther [p.58] and made him a successor of the lollards and a precursor of English independents rather than the erastians. -
