Together with a small party of entomologists from N.E. I.ancashire. invited to eollect at light near the shore at Formby, I experienced the somewhat overwhelming enthrisiasm and hospitality extended to all at “ Warren Mount” . Fed, feted, and equipped, we were taken by cars to the shore, sheets were laid down in front of the headlights, and a memorable night ensued. The night was dark and warm, the moths arrived in great numbers and, true to the Fraser tradition, work did not cease until a few minutes before the last train left Formby, when a hurried dash to the station deposited a happy party of entomologists on the first stage of the journey home. The next meeting was long delayed. The following week-end saw the black-out in force, and it was not until 1946 that T found the Frasens, still enthusiastic, establishing the Eaven Society. -

Phylogeny, evolution and speciation of Choristoneura and Tortricidae (Lepidoptera) by Giovanny Fagua González A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Systematics and Evolution Department of Biological Sciences University of Alberta © Giovanny Fagua González, 2017 Abstract Leafrollers moths are one of the most ecologically and economically important groups of herbivorous insects. These Lepidoptera are an ideal model for exploring the drivers that modulate the processes of diversification over time. This thesis analyzes the evolution of Choristoneura Lederer, a well known genus because of its pest species, in the general context of the evolution of Tortricidae. It takes an inductive view, starting with analysis of phylogenetic, biogeographic and diversification processes in the family Tortricidae, which gives context for studying these processes in the genus Choristoneura. Tectonic dynamics and niche availability play intertwined roles in determining patterns of diversification; such drivers explain the current distribution of many clades, whereas events like the rise of angiosperms can have more specific impacts, such as on the diversification rates of herbivores. Tortricidae are a diverse group suited for testing the effects of these determinants on the diversification of herbivorous clades. To estimate ancestral areas and diversification patterns in Tortricidae, a complete tribal-level dated tree was inferred using molecular markers and calibrated using fossil constraints. The time-calibrated phylogeny estimated that Tortricidae diverged ca. 120 million years ago (Mya) and diversified ca. 97 Mya, a timeframe synchronous with the rise of angiosperms in the Early-Mid Cretaceous. Ancestral areas analysis supports a Gondwanan origin of Tortricidae in the South American plate. -

During an ongoing fannistic survey o n the Faroe Is! es eight previously unknown species of moths were recorded in 1997: the two casebearer moths Coleophora glaucicolella Wood and C. versurella Zeller, the tortricid Acleris sparsana Den. & Schiff., the pyralid Udea lutealis Hh., the pterophorid Stcnoptil:ia bipunctidactylaScop. and the noctuids Amphipoea lucens Frr., A. erinanensis Burr.& Pierce, and Xestia c nigrum L. With regard to their fauna! status C.glaucicolella, A.sparsana and S. bi jmnctidactyla probably rep re sent overloaked resident species, wh ile C. versurella is considered a native descendan t from an e arlier invasion in August 1996. U. lutea lis, A. lucens and A. erinanensis apparently represent migrants from the adjacent British and Irish areas, while X.c-nigrum is considered avagrant from Central Europe. Due to its similaritywith Wes t Scottish specimens, the Faroese Amphipoea lucens probably originated from a local population in that area from where sim ilar genital features to A.fucosa are reported. Vengono citate 13 specie, di cui 2, Agdistis hartigi Arenberger, 1973 e Agdistis protai Arenberger, 1973, sono nuove per la fauna siciliana. SUMMARY The Pterophoridae from Pantano Longarini (South-eastern Sicily) ( Lepidoptera ). The author report the results of a two-year field research on Lepidoptera Pterophoridae from Pantano Lon - garini (Sicily). Thirteen species are recognized; two of them, Agdistis hartigi Arenberger, 1973 and Agdistis protai Arenberger, 1973, are new for Sicilian fauna. INTRODUCTION The species of Pterophoridae known for Sicily and circumsicilian islands are 48 over nearly one hundred present in Italy ( ARENBERGER et al ., 1995; ROMANO & ROMANO , 1995; BELLA & F ERRAUTO , 2005; TREMATERRA et al ., 2006; BELLA & MARCHESE , 2007 ). For the Sicilian fauna only one endemic species belonging to the genus Capperia Tutt. is known. The results of a two year field research on Lepidoptera Pterophoridae from Pantano Longarini (South-eastern Sicily), following three previous spe - cific contributions (B ALDIZZONE et al ., 1999; BASSI et al ., 1999; TREMATERRA 78 S. B ELLA et al ., 1999), are here reported. The survey was based on monthly observa - tions directly conducted by the author; some specimens collected by dr Ole Karsholt in 2002 and 2006 are also mentioned. To attract the moths 160/250 W ML-lamps were used. Pantano Longarini (UTM co-ordinates WA0163), is included in the Regional Nature Reserve called “Pantani della Sicilia sud-orientale”; this salt marsh area of 1,358 hectares is situated between Pachino, in the province of Syracuse, and Ispica, in the province of Raguse. -
