VI Abstract Understanding the behaviour of major and trace elements during metamorphism is fundamental for our understanding of the geochemical evolution of the Earth’s crust and the formation of orogenic orebodies. Furthermore, it is essential to know how key elements and radiogenic isotopes behave in metamorphic/hydrothermal systems in order to apply them meaningfully to solve important questions in geosciences. Metamorphic/hydrothermal reactions are most evidently preserved at the mineral scale, so in situ microanalytical techniques are best suited for tracing the record of metamorphism or hydrothermal alteration. In this thesis, I outline new analytical developments for in situ analysis of halogens in minerals and fluid samples, and of Sm-Nd isotopes in REE-rich minerals. These techniques, in conjunction with comprehensive bulk rock and mineral geochemistry and element distribution analysis, are then applied to well- characterised metamorphic rocks from the Adelaide Fold Belt and Mt Isa Inlier. Although fluid is an essential ingredient for mass transport during metamorphism, it is often difficult to identify the source of metamorphic/hydrothermal fluids. Traditionally, fluid inclusions have been used to gain insights into the source and composition of fluids. Until very recently, quantification of key elements such as bromine and chlorine in fluid inclusions relied almost solely on bulk rock analyses techniques (i.e., crush-leach). These methods do not allow distinction between different fluid inclusion generations that might hold crucial information on the evolution of a hydrothermal system and associated mineralization. The development of in situ LA-ICP-MS analysis of chlorine and bromine in fluid inclusions now allows for the targeting of individual fluid inclusions of a specific fluid type in a mineral. In this thesis these techniques were further tested and refined, and applied for the first time to a range of natural scapolite group minerals, minerals assumed to reflect the Cl/Br content of the coexisting hydrothermal fluids. The results show that fluid sources can be identified with a ~ 25 μm resolution in Cl and Br bearing minerals. This technique was applied on scapolite minerals from skarns, regional metamorphic rocks and a mineralized shear-zone of the Mary Kathleen Fold Belt in the Mt. Isa inlier. While scapolite minerals in skarns contain Cl/Br ratios typically associated with granitic fluids, metamorphic scapolite indicates that fluids were dominantly derived from basinal brines formed from sub- aerial evaporation of seawater beyond the point of halite saturation. This bittern fluid infiltrated the underlying sedimentary sequences prior to regional metamorphism. Zoned scapolite in the mineralized shear-zone records three discrete pulses of magmatic and metamorphic fluid, and it is suggested that fluid mixing may have assisted mineralization along and around this shear-zone. To investigate element mobility during metamorphism, I studied the Eastern Mt. Lofty Ranges in South Australia. Metamorphic rocks of the Mt. Lofty Ranges have a relatively simple VII metamorphic history, and metamorphic gradients and widespread up-temperature fluid flow has been documented previously. This allows monitoring of mineral and bulk rock compositional changes (or lack thereof) during metamorphism across a regional metamorphic gradient from ~350–400 ˚C to migmatite grade (~ 650–700 ˚C) at ~0.3–0.5 GPa, in a confined framework. The results show that, despite widespread up-temperature fluid flow, major elements and most trace elements are isochemical during metamorphism. These elements are effectively redistributed into newly formed major minerals or accessory phases.

    Reading the local paper: Social and cultural functions of the local press in Preston, Lancashire, 1855-1900 by Andrew Hobbs A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire November 2010 ABSTRACT This thesis demonstrates that the most popular periodical genre of the second half of the nineteenth century was the provincial newspaper. Using evidence from news rooms, libraries, the trade press and oral history, it argues that the majority of readers (particularly working-class readers) preferred the local press, because of its faster delivery of news, and because of its local and localised content. Building on the work of Law and Potter, the thesis treats the provincial press as a national network and a national system, a structure which enabled it to offer a more effective news distribution service than metropolitan papers. Taking the town of Preston, Lancashire, as a case study, this thesis provides some background to the most popular local publications of the period, and uses the diaries of Preston journalist Anthony Hewitson as a case study of the career of a local reporter, editor and proprietor. Three examples of how the local press consciously promoted local identity are discussed: Hewitson’s remoulding of the Preston Chronicle, the same paper’s changing treatment of Lancashire dialect, and coverage of professional football. These case studies demonstrate some of the local press content that could not practically be provided by metropolitan publications. The ‘reading world’ of this provincial town is reconstructed, to reveal the historical circumstances in which newspapers and the local paper in particular were read.

The new Plan is only the College’s second. The first, approved in 2008, identified an acute shortage of space as a major strategic problem. Fuelled in part by large numbers of alumni donations, Cohen Quadrangle – opened in 2017 and now the recipient of the first prize in the Higher Education and Research category at the World Architecture Festival – splendidly filled that gap. Wood's recent survey of British readers showed Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to be their overwhelming choice as the all-time favourite of the British book. This news has caused much clucking among intellectuals who know, of course, that this is far from the greatest work of English literature. However, even with the question of rank put aside, there is no doubt that Tolkien's epic enjoys more readers, both young and old, than any comparable set of books. Although it became something of a cult work in the 1960s, it continues to enjoy a large and varied following almost forty years later. It's a wonderful thing, especially in our film at the heart of the age - where, as Alistair Cook darkly observed, reading will soon become a quirky art like manual quilting. Some of my students have admitted that going through all 1,500 pages of Tolkien's epic is their greatest intellectual achievement; this is the first time they have ever gone beyond themselves long enough to master a larger world than their own small space. Others told me, even more tellingly, that reading Tolkien makes them feel clean in a way that nothing else does. While a stinging critique of our cultural decadence, it is also a tribute to something moral and religiously pure in Tolkien's work. In an attempt to understand the Tolkien phenomenon more fully, I suggest this distillation of Tolkien Humphrey Carpenter: Biography (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1977), as well as other readings I've made.

Those who survive can write all that is necessary."1 So wrote Lieutenent Robert Quilter Gilson of the Cambridgeshire Battalion just days before his death at the Somme in August 1916, and he certainly intended to include among those who would write on his behalf his band of brothers, a group of friends from Birmingham with literary aspirations which called itself the Tea Club and Barrovian Society. But only two members of this fellowship would outlive the Great War, and years later when critics were contending that The Lord of the Rings was an allegory for World War II, one of them, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, snapped back, "To be caught in youth by 1914 was no less hideous an experience than to be involved in 1939 ... by 1918 all but one of my close friends were dead."2 A month after Gilson's death (Aug. 5), a young composer named George Butterworth was killed in the same battle. Not long before departing for the Western Front, Butterworth had made his exit from a soiree by remarking to his friend Ralph Vaughan Williams in a “characteristically abrupt way, ‘You know. You ought to write a symphony’.”3 VW’s second symphonic effort — the London Symphony — is thus dedicated to Butterworth. ! Gilson and Butterworth shared more than just their fate at the biggest battle the world had yet known,4 and Tolkien and Vaughan Williams, who both survived their wartime mobilization, had more in common than the artistic missions bequeathed upon them.
