Sep. 2021 WORDS, WIGS AND VEILS: MODEST RELIGIOUS DRESS AND GENDERED ONLINE IDENTITIES Eleonora Fitzsimmons Theology and Religious Studies King's College London, University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies, September 2016 !1 Abstract Words, Wigs and Veils: Modest Religious Dress and Gendered Online Identities In this thesis, I explore how Muslim and Jewish women in a predominantly North American cultural context use online public spaces to blog about their religious dress practices. Existing comparisons between online self-representation and religious dress among Muslim and Jewish women includes work by Reina Lewis (2013) and Emma Tarlo (2013 and 2016). My research builds on and expands their contributions, while depending on slightly different primary sources and theoretical frameworks. Consequently, I use Mol’s (2002) concept of ‘enactment’ to elaborate how Mahmood’s (2005) and Avishai’s (2008) arguments for women’s religious practices within the confines of conservative religions to be understood as a form of ethical agency, might operate online. Additionally, in light of how different forms of authority are enacted in the primary sources, I interrogate Heidi Campbell’s (2007) preliminary framework of multiple layers of religious authority online. Approaching the loose blogging networks of about 30 blogs per religion from a qualitative, humanities perspective, I consider the bloggers to have creative control over their writing: I study online writing about religious dress, not religious dress itself. Beyond using snapshots of blog posts written by individual bloggers, I consider how some of the bloggers’ perspectives have changed over time, and analyse interactions between bloggers and commenters in the ‘Comments’ sections of relevant posts. I argue that enactments of gendered religious identities online are often led by women, within frameworks that are simultaneously personal and which the bloggers themselves consider orthodox.     Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and regional expertise, it offers in-depth investigation of the gendered dimensions of Muslim pilgrimage and the life-worlds of female pilgrims. Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation. Illus. by David Polonsky. New York: Pantheon Books, 2018. 149 pp. $14.95. (9781101871799) Gr. 8-12. To illustrate every word in Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl would have taken years upon years and thousands of pages. Instead Folman and Polonsky abridged the renowned diary into an utterly gorgeous graphic novel. Folman manages to cover all the main events and feelings in Frank’s diary such as the hardships of living in the annex, but also discovering love and questioning the world. Polonsky, a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, had created illustrations that enhance the text beautifully. These lush images help to tell the story as much as the text does. He and Folman are best known for the award-winning animated documentary Waltz with Bashir (2008) about the 1982 Lebanon War, and are currently producing a movie version of the graphic adaptation, Where Is Anne Frank?     THE AGUNAH CRISIS: AN ANALYSIS OF SOME PROPOSED SYSTEMIC SOLUTIONS (from a series in progress) I I was honored to be a participant in the Tikvah/JOFA Agunah Summit. The experience caused me much and ongoing rethinking. That rethinking was certainly a goal of the summit, and much has been written optimistically about other outcomes. But I also felt that much of what was said and happened at the Summit evidenced deep confusion about the nature of the challenge and about the ways in which proposed solutions would work in practice, and that this confusion often made it difficult even to have serious conversations, let alone to agree on action steps. I am accordingly starting a series of articles intended to describe the agunah issue as clearly as possible, in the hope that this will enable new collaborations and creativity. I. Who is an Agunah? A) The “Classic” Agunah: Definition and History of Four Categories a. Definition: In popular discourse, the classic agunah is a woman whose husband has disappeared and may or may not be dead. The Rabbis relaxed their usual evidentiary standards and allowed her to remarry on the basis of normally invalid testimony or circumstantial evidence of death. However, fearing fraud, they also imposed severe penalties if the husband eventually turned up alive. History: Thousands and thousands of responsa through the centuries address cases of disappeared husbands. These responsa generally reflect the commonsense understanding of the Talmud, namely that formal rules of evidence should not prevent a widow from remarrying, but that remarriage should be permitted only when the husband’s death can genuinely be seen as proven.

    Article The Veiling Issue in 20th Century Iran in Fashion and Society, Religion, and Government Faegheh Shirazi Department of Middle Eastern Studies, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712, USA; [email protected] Received: 7 May 2019; Accepted: 30 July 2019; Published: 1 August 2019 Abstract: This essay focuses on the Iranian woman’s veil from various perspectives including cultural, social, religious, aesthetic, as well as political to better understand this object of clothing with multiple interpretive meanings. The veil and veiling are uniquely imbued with layers of meanings serving multiple agendas. Sometimes the function of veiling is contradictory in that it can serve equally opposing political agendas. Keywords: Iran; women’s right; veiling; veiling fashion; Iranian politics Iran has a long history of imposing rules about what women can and cannot wear, in addition to so many other forms of discriminatory laws against women that violate human rights. One of the most recent protests (at Tehran University) against the compulsory hijab1 was also meant to unite Iranians of diverse backgrounds to show their dissatisfaction with the government. For the most part, the demonstration was only a hopeful attempt for change. In one tweet from Iran [at Tehran University] we read in Persian: When Basijis [who receive their orders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Supreme Leader of Iran] did not give permission to the students to present a talk against compulsory hijab, the students started to sing together the iconic poem of yar e ,my school friend2. “Basij members became helpless and nervous/ﻳﺎﺭ ﺩﺑﺴﺘﺎﻧﯽ ﻣﻦ dabestani man but the students sang louder and louder.

The Great Unwashed Public Baths in Urban America, 1840-1920 a\TH5 FOR Marilyn Thornton Williams Washing "The Great Unwashed" examines the almost forgotten public bath movement of the nineteenth and early twentieth cen­ turies—its origins, its leaders and their motives, and its achievements. Marilyn Williams surveys the development of the American obsession with cleanliness in the nineteenth century and discusses the pub­ lic bath movement in the context of urban reform in New York, Baltimore, Philadel­ phia, Chicago, and Boston. During the nineteenth century, personal cleanliness had become a necessity, not only for social acceptability and public health, but as a symbol of middle-class sta­ tus, good character, and membership in the civic community. American reformers believed that public baths were an impor­ tant amenity that progressive cities should provide for their poorer citizens. The bur­ geoning of urban slums of Irish immi­ grants, the water cure craze and other health reforms that associated cleanliness with health, the threat of epidemics—es­ pecially cholera—all contributed to the growing demand for public baths. New waves of southern and eastern European immigrants, who reformers perceived as unclean and therefore unhealthy, and in­ creasing acceptance of the germ theory of disease in the 1880s added new impetus to the movement. During the Progressive Era, these fac­ tors coalesced and the public bath move­ ment achieved its peak of success. Between 1890 and 1915 more than forty cities constructed systems of public baths.
