NEWS LETTER ~~~~~E~9 Southern Africa Support Committee Vol. 1 NEWS LETTER ~~~~~e~9 CAPE VERDE .IS.. " ' THE.. ' .AMBIA Banlul SEYCHELLES IS. • ZIMBABWE ~. " UPDATE ERITREA ... a look inside. i>.' . \ .30 ·.;...... '. History of the Southern Africa Support Committee The Southern Africa SUi)port Committe (SASe) is a multi racial group engaged in ~ctivities relating directly to and supportive of the independence struggles of the peoples of Southern Africa. In existence since 1975 SAse recognizes that the white minority governments of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Namibia (South west Africa) and Azania (South Afrioa) have forcibly imoosed the inhuman system of apartheid on the black people of these countries. Further, we recognize that to black people in these countries, apartheid means rigid segregation, poverty, arbitrdry imprisonment and one of the hi ghest infant mort ality rates in the world. Because of the barbaric conditions under which Africans must live and die, SAse oP?oses all United States military, econo mic, cultural and political ties to the racist govern ments in Southern Africa. Beyond this, we acknowledge the various liberation movements in Azania, Namibia and Zimbabwe as the real representatives of the vnst majority of the people. We explicity view the white upholders of the apartheid system as illegitimate and immoral. In short, SASe stands with the African people W80 are struggling for majority rule, the abol ition of apartheid and 8 system of full economic, political ans social equality in the countries of Southern Africa. At 9resent, SASe has branches in Los Angeles, Pasadena, on the UCLA campus, Santa Monica and at Santa Monica City College. We are engaged in organizing in several areas. We are cont inuing to collect clothes to be sent to Zimbabwe refugees and freedom fighters who are opposed to the racist Ian Smith rigime. SAse is also involved in numerous film showings, slide shows and educational orogams. For more information on SASe or if you wish to set up a film showing for your group, call 684-1892. In response, the government has begun wholesale conscription of Blacks into the ZIJV1BABWE army, and stepped up recruitment of mer cena:ries. At the same time, though, record number of white Rhodesians have decided to UPDATE bailout of their sinking ship. The exodus has now reached 2,000 people a month. • Daniel Carney and Zimbabwe
DANIEL CARNEY AND ZIMBABWE In the early 1980s, Daniel Carney’s fame as a writer of popular thrillers was cresting. Euan Lloyds’ film of Carney’s second novel, The Wild Geese, had just been released, its blood-and-guts depiction of white mercenaries in Africa continuing to delight overgrown teenagers on YouTube to this day. Filmed to much protest in apartheid South Africa, the production was followed in 1985 by the far less successful Wild Geese II, based on Carney’s novel The Square Circle. If Wilbur Smith, Robert Ludlum and other thriller writers signed to Bantam in the seventies are still read today, then Carney’s name and work have disappeared almost completely. In part, this can be explained by his widow’s refusal to allow reprints of his work after his death aged 43 in 1987. However, Carney’s association with the white minority rule of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) might also be blamed for his obscurity, even if this association now seems as unfair and crass as Rhodesia’s political system prior to 1979. Far from endorsing the Rhodesian regime, Carney’s thrillers show an increasing distance from white minority rule while condemning the horrific terrorist acts of Mugabe’s ZANU guerillas. Unremarked even at its publication in 1980, his best novel Under a Raging Sky hinted at a future with genuine democracy in Zimbabwe, at the same time as noting the dangers of what was, in fact, to ensue: a rushed endorsement of Robert Mugabe’s ZANU PF with the tragic consequences we see today. The son of a British diplomat and a wealthy Canadian mother, Carney was born in Beirut in 1943 and shuttled between Macau, Canada and West African states as a child before being sent to boarding school in England at the age of seven, after which time he rarely saw his parents, other than during summer holidays.

Wild Geese and Solidarity: Conjunctural Praxis for a Spirit-filled Ethics MARILYNJ. LEGGE Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over announcing your place in the family ofthings. 1 Introduction IN OUR CURRENT condition of postrnodem globalization, capitalism infil trates and commodifies the nooks and crannies of our personal lives and our world. This dislocation of our spatial, social, historical, and intimate connections presents new difficulties for building justice and peace and mending creation. In the absence of credible political alternatives, people's energy and hope for change can weaken and fade our vision of a common good. How can people link across particularities for the sake of justice and community? Mary Oliver's poetic voice moves us to pursue shifting pattems of conjunction. Like wild geese who resist domestica tion, we need to preserve energy in the rhythm of ongoing movement, to participate in a joumey without assured outcomes, to share leadership and rest, and never to forget the most vulnerable. In this harsh and excit ing world, we will conjoin social relations with the mystery of Cod's creation.2 1. Mary Oliver, "Wild Geese," in Dream Work (New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, 1986),14. 2. My hearty thanks to Liz Bounds, Michael Bourgeois, and Alyda Faber for their con structive response to earlier drafts of this essay. 165 166 MARILYN J. LEGGE Beverly Wildung Harrison is a contemporary prophet who considers theological ethics as a material practice. She has mentored many of us near and far in the political project of making Christian theology gen uinely critical enough to escape cultural provincialism, especially by making ethics and radical social change accountable to women's lived world experience, particularly that of those most marginalized.

Yang, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 This dissertation explores the omnipresent role birds play in the English language and in Western cultural history. Reading and weaving across academic discourse, multi-genre literature, and obsolete and everyday figures, I examine the multiplicity of ways in which birds manifest and are embedded in modes and materialities of human composing and communicating. To apply Anne Lamott’s popular advice of writing “bird by bird” literally/liberally, each chapter shares stories of a species, family, or flock of birds. Believing in the enduring rhetorical power of narrative assemblages over explicit thetic arguments, I’ve modeled this project on the movements of flocked birds. I initially proposed and now offer a prosed assembly of avian figures following each other in flight, swerving fluidly across broad and varied landscapes while maintaining elastic, organic connections.

INTERVIEW WITH MARTIN GRACE (ROGER MOORE STUNT DOUBLE) - 2009/2010 Interview by Anders Frejdh, Founder of From Sweden with Love, and Marie-France Vienne, webmaster for Roger Moore’s official website. First of all, could you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born in Kilkenny, Ireland on September 12, 1942. I attended National School at a little place called Lisdowney. The village master in the town thought his little school were the best. He was a sincere man and stern to view. That was from the age of 6 to 14. Then, I attended the college in Kilkenny City. It was during this time that I experienced the excitement of watching my first action movies by a travelling film show in a tent. It was sheer magic. I went to London in the early 1960’s and attended Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. I took a job with Butlins Holiday Camp in 1963, organising sport and playing in their theatre to gain experience. I won a Charlton Heston talent contest in 1974 that took me to Hollywood for the first time. I was already preparing my skills with boxing, wrestling, fencing, swimming, trampoline and gym work out, special motorcar and motorcycling driving skills, parachuting and various other sports in view of becoming an action stunt man in films. I attended stunt classes to learn the basics and joined a stunt agency for films and commercials. It was for commercials that I got my first stunt jobs. The white knight in Supersoft hairspray and the action man on Cadburys milk tray chocolates stunts.
