Allied Artists & Monogram Pictures Historical* Resume Allied Artists & Monogram Pictures The Allied Artists and Monogram Pictures names have always stood for cost effective, yet quality entertainment product. There have been a number of motion picture houses known for their ability to produce movies inexpensively. Many such companies have not only produced “cheap” movies – often dubbed “B’s” - but some have successfully modeled themselves after larger studios, earning multiple Academy Awards along the way. By the early 1930’s, only a handful of the independents had configured themselves into cheaper versions of the studio system. One of the most important was Monogram, which was originally located at 4516 Sunset Blvd., then relocated to 1040 N. Las Palmas Ave. In 1935, Monogram merged into Republic, becoming an independent company again one year later, and moving, once again, over to Sunset Drive and Hoover Street. Monogram made money on the Bowery Boys and the Cisco Kid, but under its intended “A” movie subsidiary, Allied Artists, also produced some truly memorable films, including Don Siegel’s paranoid masterpiece, Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Throughout the years, Allied Artists has released such award winning movies as Cabaret; Papillon; The Wild Geese; El Cid; The Pawnbroker; House on Haunted Hill; and such camp cult classics as The Blob, The Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, and The Queen of Outer Space, to name just a few. Through the golden age of the low budgets, Allied Artists and Monogram Pictures were responsible for the following motion pictures: (Award nominated, award winning, and notable films indicated in italic bold face) ALLIED ARTISTS PRODUCED MOVIES 1. The forlorn wails of intrepid seagulls beating against the craggy shore. A stoic reminder of the trials of human suffering, the main prison rises stark against the roiling San Francisco Bay. The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary began its storied history in 1910 as a United States Army prison before transforming into a federal prison in 1934. Since its inception, Alcatraz held the distinction of being one of America’s toughest prisons, often being touted as “escape proof”. During its time as an active prison, Alcatraz held some of the most problematic prisoners. Notable characters held in Alcatraz includes; Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelley and Robert Stroud, among just a few. Alphonse Gabriel Capone, also known as Scarface, was an American gangster. Scarface was known for his brutality following the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago in which seven rival gang members were gunned down by Capone’s men.

  • Screams on Screens: Paradigms of Horror
Screams on Screens: Paradigms of Horror Barry Keith Grant Brock University [email protected] Abstract This paper offers a broad historical overview of the ideology and cultural roots of horror films. The genre of horror has been an important part of film history from the beginning and has never fallen from public popularity. It has also been a staple category of multiple national cinemas, and benefits from a most extensive network of extra-cinematic institutions. Horror movies aim to rudely move us out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties. The ideology of horror has shifted historically according to contemporaneous cultural anxieties, including the fear of repressed animal desires, sexual difference, nuclear warfare and mass annihilation, lurking madness and violence hiding underneath the quotidian, and bodily decay. But whatever the particular fears exploited by particular horror films, they provide viewers with vicarious but controlled thrills, and thus offer a release, a catharsis, of our collective and individual fears. Author Keywords Genre; taboo; ideology; mythology. Introduction Insofar as both film and videogames are visual forms that unfold in time, there is no question that the latter take their primary inspiration from the former. In what follows, I will focus on horror films rather than games, with the aim of introducing video game scholars and gamers to the rich history of the genre in the cinema. I will touch on several issues central to horror and, I hope, will suggest some connections to videogames as well as hints for further reflection on some of their points of convergence.

  • Complete Film Noir
COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have.
