It was mid-February when Mike began talk to me about a dog. I asked if he was talking about his daughter’s dog, Delilah. He replied No. I asked if he was referring to my own dog, Piper. Again, Mike told me No. Mike mentioned the dog a few more times until he finally feel asleep that afternoon. I had no idea what dog he was talking about and soon forgot about it. Later that day, I overheard staff members talking about a little dog that was sleeping under the bushes on the grounds of the residence. Apparently, this little dog was either lost or abandoned and had been seeking refuge from the cold on the property. Being the dog lover that I am, I rescued the little visitor who was badly in need of some TLC, brought her home to be bathed, fed and took her to our vet to be checked out. I was thrilled when she received a clean bill of health. When I returned to Kaplan to be with my brother Mike, I was grateful to be able to bring along my new little friend. When I walked into Mike’s room, his first response was “Oh wow, Crash is here”.

    Spring 2018 Old American Golf Club to host LPGA Tournament in April The Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic will take place April 30-May 6 at Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. The course, designed by Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard and located on the shores of Lake Lewisville, pays hom- age to the “Golden Age of Golf Architecture.” Together, Davis and Leonard traveled the country researching the old classic courses such as Shinnecock, Maidstone, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Pinehurst before they began construction. Old American has previ- ously hosted the Texas Women’s Open, the NTPGA Professional Championship and a U.S. Open qualifier. The 18-hole layout emphasizes strategy and shot-making and contains natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes that were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs. When GCA did our own course ranking, six years ago, voted for only by golf architects, we released the results over a two-week period on our website, and our traffic numbers went through the roof. This is natural: there is little point doing a ranking unless it has credibility. Unfortunately, of course, the criteria are themselves subjective (as well as impenetrable – I have still never heard a good explanation of what ‘shot values’ means and how it can be measured).     Tripp Davis and Associates Hired by The Powelton Club for Bunker Restoration Project Norman, OK (January 9, 2019) — Tripp Davis and Associates (TDA) is overseeing a major bunker restoration project at The Powelton Club in Newburgh, New York. The historic club in the heart of the Hudson River Valley was founded in 1892 and is one of the oldest clubs in the U.S. The course was originally designed by Devereux Emmet in 1926. The TDA plan is to rebuild the bunkers in Emmet’s style with steep grass faces and strategic positioning, while keeping the overall square footage more manageable. The bunkers at Powelton had become too large, historically speaking, and Davis and team will carefully downsize the overall square footage throughout the golf course, in keeping with Emmet’s style of designing slender bunkers. Functionally, TDA, along with golf course builder Frank O’Dowd of Intergolf, is installing better drainage, bunker liners and a better grade of sand so that the playing quality of the bunkers is better and the sand is easier to maintain over time. 16th hole “We were honored to be selected for this renovation and restoration work at The Powelton Club and it was because of our knowledge of Devereux Emmet and our overall reputation for historical work and a track record of staying on budget,” said Davis. “Once we have completed our work, the members are going to see their golf course suddenly look ‘older’ with a more classic bunker style but with much better sand. Even though bunkers are supposed to be places to avoid strategically, I am really looking forward to seeing the members play out of them.” Construction started in early October of 2018 and should be completed by Spring 2019.
