We feel the importance of challenging the status quo and helping students understand the importance of raising their voice. The Debaters provides an opportunity, to learn to argue convincingly, write meaningfully and speak fluently. Film Appreciation Society : Annual Report It was yet another glorious year for the Film Appreciation Society. The Society came of age with the completion of its five splendid years on 31st of October, 2011. Ever since its establishment, the society has been dynamic and has provided unique opportunities for the enjoyment and appreciation of the best in world cinema. It aims to increase access to a wide range of films based on a variety of themes, and to provide behind – the – scene insight through open discussions and seminars in order to develop a penchant for film appreciation among the students and to create a dynamic community of art enthusiasts. This year, it was even better, with the screening of highly diverse and discreet movies ranging from Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” which is a wonderful blend of comedy and social drama and provides a look into the world of the ‘Great Depression’ by people who lived it, to the world of dreams and fantasy of the celebrated director Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” – the story of a young girl stuck in a situation that she does not like or control (an analogy to the fascist regime of those day.) “Love and Death” – a scathing satire on Russian literature and people who engage in mock serious philosophical debates showed u the glimpse of the genius of Woody Allen at his comic best while “Waiting for Godot”, a movie adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s theatrical masterpiece introduced us to the philosophy of Existentialism. A seminar on ‘war films’ was organized which saw the revered presence of Sanjay Kak, a renowned independent film-maker as the chief guest and the screening of Gillo Pontecorvo’s “Battle of Algiers” – a cult movie on ‘war’ based on occurrences during the Algerian War (1954-62) against French colonial occupation in North Africa, and Ari Folman’s “Waltz With Bashir” – a memoir, a combat picture and a piece of investigative journalism depicting Ari Folman’s struggle to make sense of his experience as a soldier in the Labanon war of 1982. The seminar was a huge success and deepened our understanding on the complex issue of terrorism and counter- terrorism. Students turned up in large numbers and their enthusiasm during the post- screening discussion bears testimony to its success. The credit for the success of this seminar also goes to the honorable members and the volunteers who assisted them, for their painstaking efforts. They really did a commendable job. It was a great year, but the Society still has a long way to go and our utmost priority will be to keep up the good work in the succeeding years as well. Convener : Ranjan Swarnkar, Asstt. National Education Day

The National Education Day was celebrated on 11th November 11, by ARSD College. Professor Rizwan Qaiser from Jamia Millia Islamia was invited to deliver a talk on ‘Maulana Azad and Making of Modern India’. Professor Qaiser started with the note that Maulana Azad is one of the biggest Indian leaders that India could produce. He played a very important role in garnering nationalistic consciousness amongst the masses. He not only put forward values important Ms. Priyanka welcoming Prof. Rizwan Quaiser, for making modern India, but argued also seen O.S.D. Dr. Sandeep K. Sharma for secularism & religious tolerance as the basis for “New India”. He firmly believed that the talents of all Indians are alike which cannot be broken into various interests on the line of religion. He was opposed to breaking the country on lines of religious identities. For him India stood for composite secular country which could show the world the path for religious tolerance. He stressed that in order to set an example India could spearhead a revolution in all spheres. As the first Education minister he had set the foundation for new educational polices too. Teachers and students attended the talk and asked very interesting questions and showed keen interest in the life and times of Maulana Azad. On the whole it was a very interactive session that saw curious minds exchanging thoughts on Maulana Azad and his life. Dr. I.M. Jha Convener SEMINAR ON GANDHI

Alumni Meet 2011 : “Confluentia” : A Kaleidoscope

The college organized its 3rd Alumni meet on Sunday, the 11th December 2011 with tremendous enthusiasm and great fanfare. It was christened ‘Confluentia’. Dr. Subhash Sharma, I.A.S., Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India was invited as the Chief Guest, Prof. S.C. Arora, former Head of the Department of Mathematics, Delhi University, an alumnus from the first batch of the students of the college. He was the Guest of Honour while Mr. Ramakant Goswami, Minister of Industries, Government of NCT, Delhi, another alumnus from the first batch graced the occasion as the Distinguished Guest. The meet was presided over by the college Governing Body Chairman Mr. Ashwin Chadha. Members of various sub-committees under an apex Organising Committee had toiled very hard during the preceding one month or so to make the meet a memorable one. On the day of the meet, the college wore a festive look. Floral patterns, festoons, colourful flags and banners adorned its premises. The lush green cricket field, the main venue was a treat to the eyes. The sun shone brightly in the salubrious winter weather. Right from the morning, the place was teeming with activity. Smartly attired teachers were breezing around smiling, clicking away snaps and giving instructions to workers and student-volunteers on all and sundry matters. Apart from the beautifully decorated stage in the main Pandal and well arranged chairs and tables in the sprawling field, a giant flex prominently displaying the names of the Eminent Alumni was a major attraction. As the day progressed, the alumni; some of them with spouses, superannuated teachers and other guests gradually began arriving at the venue. Soon the Registration Counter started witnessing long queues of former students. Even some non-teaching staff were enthusiastically participating in the meet. It was a scene of all-around joy and happiness. By noon, the entire venue had got transformed into a sea of humanity. The meet was formally inaugurated through the lighting of the lamp and Saraswati Vandana. The Chief Guest Dr. Subhash Sharma spoke at length about how India’s recent growth story has not been a story of inclusive and balanced growth and Mr. Ramakant Goswami in his speech strongly refuted Dr. Sharma’s contention and threw light on some lighter side of his life in the college in the early years of 1960. He promised all possible help for the infrastructure development of the college. Prof. Arora in a very moving speech reminisced about the way the teachers treated the students as their own children in his days in the college and said he owed his success to the college. Mr. Ashwin Chadha greeted the audience and wished all success to the organizers. Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Officer on Special Duty also greeted the distinguished guests and members of the audience. He spoke at length about the Alumni Meet. Dr.

Anup Chatterjee, Convenor, Alumni Meet 2011 presented a brief sketch of the evolution of the alumni meet in the college, He also focused on some of the highlights of the current meet. The formal Speeches were followed by honouring ten Eminent Alumni with shawls and mementoes. The teachers who had superannuated since the last Alumni Meet were also honoured with mementoes for their distinguished services to the College. The meet also took an opportunity to felicitate for the first time those alumni who are currently on the staff of the college in various capacities. The recipients from all the categories spoke on this occasion. The announcement of the recess and the invitation to lunch marked the conclusion of the formal part of the Programme. During the break, the students of the college enacted the much acclaimed award-winning Street Play ‘Yah Dilli Hai’. The guests, their spouses, the staff members and the volunteers while savouring their food, keenly watched the play and highly applauded the stellar production. After the recess, when the participants took their seats in the pandal or simply basked in the sun in motley assembled groups, it was time for a programme of Kawwalis and sufi songs under the sponsorship of Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi. For more than two and a half hours, the signers captivated the audience by presenting lilting numbers. Nothing could be more befitting than this performance by the lead-singers, Ms. Chanchal Bharti and Mr. Sarfraz Chisti, particularly, who through their mellifluous but elan voice transported the listeners to another world. It was almost a surrealistic experience. The troop also presented numbers at the request of the audience. By the time, the final number began; the sun had already turned crimson. The guests had started dispersing, as the trees started reverberating by the sound of the chirping birds. The dusk had gradually descended on the venue, reminding us that the exciting day was finally coming to an end. The singers were felicitated with bouquets as it was time to bid adieu to them. We reluctantly took leave of each other carrying the wonderful memories firmly etched in our minds. Dr. Anup Chatterjee Convener, Alumni Association

The Last Breath

The music of those screams The redness of that water The restlessness in those silences The splinter of frenzy running through the bones Can never be heard, can never be hushed They will always linger over your memories Like the wings of demon spread out at night coming closer to vex your mind

Cold breeze of your sins Might haunt you in your nightmares Waling bare foot on the ground of your insatiable lies Perhaps you were meant to turn into ashes Which then be taken away by Thanatos Golden chains will embellish your ankles and wrists Veil of doomeness will cover your shamelessness You will never be able to escape that inglorious darkness.

Broken mirror pieces of past approaches Slicing your slim, bringing sullen blood out You might yell, you might cry But God will be dead forever When it comes to listening your sighs Olga of hell will feed on your rotten soul Soon you will then realize Death is perhaps a blessing than the prophesised demise. I Want To Dream

Listen to me Listen to me There’s a fairy you see, I met her down the lane, In darkest corner seems so sane. But it was not as I thought of it, Depravity was only in its pit, But god’s grace smiled on my novice pace, Eventually she appeared with her serene face.

“She” who has some charisma in her eyes.. “She” who has some loyalty in her voice… “She” who has wonder on her lips.. “She” who has motherhood in her touch… Came to me and asked......

Why I came to this unnamed street.. Dark are its days, Insanity in its ways, Red are its passion, Black is only its fashion, Sinisterness is the only preaching, Hatred is the only breeding, Why I came to this unnamed street…

Friends, I didn’t move my lips to open, But she read all that my eyes had, (Close came she, eloquent was thee) Kissed my forehead and said You are also the one who wants to be led (Who had the only song to meet, “What I am looking for?”) Were the only eminent words Unanswered gestures made you come here I will fetch you some blue visions there You can paint them as aestheticism In it nothing exist as cynicism

But from where is this noise coming, But from where….. Ohhh that’s alarm clock summing?

Stop for a while, let me lie on my bed, Don’t you see that my eyes are still red, Here I want to cherish that dream of fairy, Here I want to feel her last night kiss and merry…

Vikram Seth’s another Suitable book in the Making By Dr. Prerana Sinha “India has changed so much and so little. My characters will be looking forward and back…. I will be exploring several complex issues, including politics, economics, gender, demography, the position of villages relative to cities, finding a companion and seeing whether that is for life I mean can you imagine a shaddi.com in 1951?” The author. Dr. Prerana Sinha a faculty in the English department, ARSD College planned to meet the author, Vikram Seth in the recent Jaipur Literature Festival 2011 held at Diggi palace at Jaipur. For the past six years it is known to be hosting a unique festival for literature lovers that throngs a number of regional, diasporic and international writers of today. Prerana Sihna has researched on all of Vikram Seth’s works. Seth, generally known for ‘A Suitable Boy’ is in fact a versatile writer who has written in several genres. Essentially a poet, he has translated poetry from Chinese, written a travel book. Travel Through Sinkiang and Tibet, A Hitchhike, collection of poems titled Mappings, All you Who Sleep tonight and The Humble Administrator’s Garden. He also attempted a libretto called The Arion and the Dolphin and the famous The Beastly tales from Here and There . He wrote three novels in which one was a novel in verse entitled The Golden Gate, a unique work inspired by Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin, while the rest of the two are the well known An Equal Music and the aforementioned, A suitable boy. His recent work is a double biography on his great grand aunt that is called The Two Lives. In his characteristic, unassuming disposition Vikram Seth once again gave a public appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2011, on 25th Jan the fifth day of the festival to a packed audience on the front lawns. Talking to the media regarding the launch of A Suitable Girl, a sequel to the much hyped & still popular A Suitable Boy, he explained, "I decided to start in the present and with Lata my Protagonist, now 80 years old. Broadly, a match is being sought for Lata’s grandson. He finds it easier to confide in Lata, than his parents; to him the grandmother to ‘Pota’ relationship is very interesting". The book is slated for 2013; however Seth was not too sure of the year just as he would not disclose categorically about the thickness or the storyline of the novel. Like his earlier novel, this story will expand beyond a family drama portraying India’s journey from 1950s, the Nehruvian era into liberalization. Seth announced that the novel had to follow because of the repeated requests from readers and publishers. But he was not enthused about it. But around 2009 elections, he said, “I started thinking about Lata and how her life would be now…..” In the interview session he was questioned by journalist and author Somnath Batabyal, “How is Lata?” Is she happy or unhappy in this novel?

72 UDAYACHAL

The answer to it was not easy since Seth said he can’t answer it, for the novel has scarcely begun. Eventually, he said, "I may not have to undergo research like the earlier novel and there was certainly the advantage of placing a novel in the present". All he had to do was “live life” and “use it as the grist for his material." The author Dr. Prerana Sinha was fortunate to spend sometime exclusively with Seth which gave her the opportunity to ask a few questions:- Q.1 Among the three novels you wrote, The Golden Gate, A Suitable Boy, An Equal Music. I would consider An Equal Music to be the most profound & brilliant work by you. Do you agree? Ans. (Seth): You might consider it to be the best because that is your viewpoint. Others might find the novel quite obscure as it is about European Classical Music. Q.2 What technique have you used in An Equal Music? Is it stream of consciousness or some kind of innovation has been used? Ans. The novel’s main protagonist is Michael Holmes who has to be presented in the first person hence yes, I’ve used stream of consciousness and regarding some innovation, well, certain passages begin with a syllable and continue likewise (Smiling he says) Its good readers haven't noticed. But see, I’ve told you a secret. Sometimes I’ve also used Pushkin’s or Eugene Onegin’s lines as a beginning since l owe my career of a writer to pushkin. Q.3 You began The Golden Gate with a taboo topic, homosexuality but ended it abruptly with the Indian familial stability theme. Can you explain this? Ans. (With a sardonic smile) That’s your job, a researcher’s work. Again, its your viewpoint. That was the way I saw it happening. Q.4 Your first book, Travel through Sinkiang and Tibet was a success and so was the novel in verse, The Golden Gate. Yet you didn’t attempt these genres again. Why? Ans. I do not write for an imagined audience. Inspiration must come to me in the form of a muse or any old fashioned thing. When I write I don’t think what is going to appease people and whether it will sell’? Q.5 Readers find writers mysterious hence they try to unravel some parts of the writer…….. Ans. (Cuts in between) But a writer should be allowed to have his own private space or if you try to unravel him he becomes a public face. I have my family, my space which deserves to get protected. Some questions were asked by audience like any suggestion he has for the upcoming writers. He gave a curt answer. “Do not force yourself to write, don’t write any crab.” He was asked why he did not like the character Michael as portrayed in An Equal Music. He replied,

73 UDAYACHAL

"Because this character is lonely, insecure and even selfish. Moreover, for me it was difficult coming out of the skin of his character". His wit and pervasive humour perpetually enlivened the session He gave circumlocutory evasive replies to questions like how would he describe himself best as a poet or a novelist or librettist or as a sculptor. In his representative, jocular vein he started off as “ See this is a vase, I hold it……” and he went avoiding the whole of it. Seth also enchanted the audience while he read out a few poems on the request of the audience like ‘All you who Sleep tonight’ which also turned out to be his favourite, and the children’s favourite, ‘The Frog and the Nightingle’. Seth completely enthralled the audience in the one hour session and proved that he really deserved the fame and admiration he got and for me this trip to Jaipur was indeed rewarding and an extremely satisfying one. I know that I’m amongst those daydreamers who desperately plan to wake up the next morning but ultimately “5 minutes more” seems like the only adage they ever learnt since childhood. In the same way hundred and more times I devoutly jot down my plans for achieving extraordinary dreams, but eventually end up into a nostalgic thought of never commencing any action for it. And so the next phase always gets occupied by these questions, larger than life… ‘Are my goals and dreams one?’ ‘Is that what I am made for…?’ What is my purpose to be here?’ And prevail, only the never learned answers.

But what if a book answers all your questions..? In other words, at such times you really start liking books that solve your muddles and guide you like motivators. They teach you to plan your dreams and ultimately actualize them. Well, if not that way at least, they motivate you to re - examine your goals once again. And this time you encounter some sufficiently inspiring passions, deep inside your heart, furthering you to a course of action…Okay fine! I know, I can’t be a healer by saying all this but I can always try.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, doesn’t need any introductions. It has already found its name amongst the list of bestselling books. I believe anyone would like this author, especially when he’s a person rising from an aberrant life himself. According to me he’s someone who has acquired an ultimate bliss.

Coming back to my motivation, The Alchemist, has a special attraction dealing with the reality of dreams.

Well, if we go for story, It’s very simple- a shepherd (protagonist) seeks out his way to realize and achieve his dreams. Abruptly, every time he stagnates back to reason the motive of his dreams and hence listens to his heat. Later God in some disguise shows him the way to his dreams and makes him realize that your dream is your purpose of life and ultimately…like every happy ending story, with a lot of twists and turns, he ultimately realizes the desire of his heart. Now the Shepherd was more satisfied and wealthy.

So what’ so different about the story?

It’s the way in which Paulo has used appropriate axioms at applicable places and interestingly, he gives a definition to everyday happenings as the word “omens”. Throughout the story, the protagonist realizes that there is some purpose of his life and if someone really wants to achieve his aim “the whole world conspires to help you to achieve it” …really cool, this statement in itself makes you believe that the people you meet every day fulfill some purpose in your life and make you learn more about your dreamland. The most important thing that I loved was the way he proved that people who don’t realize their dreams or special purpose in life are just like animals. The ones who just live for food & shelter and merely “survive”. These beings are ignorant to the life in life. According to the author, working on your dream can get started at any age or any time. The whole idea was that “dreams” are the ones which can never be lived again. These are usually forgotten and ignored just because a person is fearful of failure and of losing his loved ones during the journey.

All this is not enough, there is lot more to grasp from his novel. One can easily fall for Paulo Coelho’s writings and the spiritual approach he takes while narrating his stories, they are all based on the coincidences that have occurred in his own life. His life is full of many positive accidents and strangers who indirectly guided him to take up the sole purpose of life making him read “omens” that eventually lead him to his current place and position.

Practically speaking, I don’t know if there is something like “omens” but I surely know one thing if you want to achieve something then never stop from self- realizing it and executing your way soon, because nothing can be more satisfactory than living the whole ups and downs of your life and having an opportunity to live your achieved dreams.

For everyone I just can say: don’t get frightened from the journey to dreamland because ‘life itself is a journey, the most marvelous one’.

Sparkles of Flame Prologue This is written form the perceptive of a school going boy, and was my first short story, written four years back. School age is always delightful and is often filled with many permanent memories.

A handsome, young and a sophisticated guy is easy to recognize. His qualities are greening in his teens. You will find him sitting quietly with limited and essential interactions. His persona and charm will lure the mature. He is the one who will never get any amenity from the girls of his age. Rather his chances become bigger and more worthy only when the same girls finally learn from their bamboozling experiences with hunks. Adityaveer Kapoor had spent a good part of his years in Mayo College, Ajmer. He was a nice boy, very cultured, a lover of everything elite and exact. He wasn’t astute, not acquainted with the worldly ways. He was vulnerable of succumbing himself to people’s petty intentions. He’d do anything for a girl’s life of permanent happiness. Unfortunately, Adityaveer wasn’t aware of his own attributes. Adityaveer had started with his new grade. It was the first day and he could spot many freshmen in his classroom. He rolled his eyes and discovered new faces in every corner. To his left in the first row, on the second bench, he spotted a girl looking so simple, cute and innocent. She had dense eye-brows. Her eyes were brown. She had dimly fair complexion. Her face was round with a small and perky nose at the centre. Her long-mile smile was little unfamiliar but very lovable on her facial built. Must say, the girl was really attractive. Adityaveer was happy sitting near her. His mind began to think of approaching her and present her the ‘real him’. He greeted her warmly and welcomed her to the new institution. The girl really seemed true to her face, shy and innocent; she didn’t interact much. She was obliged of getting warm attention on the first day itself. She found herself lucky. The boy was dying to hear from her again and again. And suddenly he heard a soft, compassionate and a cushioned voice. “Ek minute Rohit Ko bulana please/” Yes, it was she asking Adityaveer! Adityaveer, as if ultra charged called Rohit. His heart had started to throb faster. The voice was so alluring that he didn’t pause to think of how she knew Rohit. She already knew his name and wanted to speak to him on the morning of the first day itself. Later, after getting back his focus Adityaveer found Rohit being her ex-school mate. This is the age when a true-life romance is generally sparked off. The bodies are young and attractive. The new emotions of adolescence are sacred. Adityaveer would not be happier if this new girl, Komal turned out to be his first as the last flame of love had already ignited in his life partner. The first day went comfortable with a latent anxiety for the desire of this girl.

Days passed with little interactions each time. There was no significant sign of affinity from the girl’s side. Soon Adityaveer took her email and her cell phone number; he was passionately in love with this girl. He had forgotten about the new subjects, new teachers, new worries and his new ipod. The girl seemed to govern his mind. It was the first time that something of this sort was happening to him. He was confused with the emotions and actualized excessively of what seemed little right to impress this girl. Adityaveer and his other friends enjoyed funny class room games with the new- comers. Once, while playing a game he had dared to propose the same girl, Komal. His confidence unexpectedly shook his mind again went off-balance and the fervour began to cluster his facial expressions. But it was just a funny game. He started to worry about sending the wrong signals to this girl. He hadn’t attempted anything of this sort before. He didn’t know what to do. He went closer, sat on knees, in a trembled voice said, “Ab aage kya as a girl??). The institution seems to be good and not like the rubbish I’ve heard. Waise, what do you think about me and the other freshmen? "Kya" Komal” They had now started to spend time together, sitting together, eating together, studying together and what not just to have each other’s company. Adityaveer seemend to be cherishing each and every moment of that time. His only problem was of finally proposing this girl and formally entering into a relationship. Once they both bunked a lecture together. The only option was of going to the arid field behind the academy wall. They went on and sat under the Margosa tree. Sitting quietly and doing nothing was making Komal uncomfortable. Adityaveer said, “You know I really like your company, it just gets me ready for anything, you get me emotionally stable.” “…and your company will definitely land me into some crisis..” replied Komal in a very genteel and a humourless demeanour. Under her sudden opinions Adityaveer was getting “bulky and clumsy.” The expressions on her face hinted her judgment of being with a cumbersome associate. And they both sat in a sullen silence. These unfavourable vibes, grimaces and erroneous understandings always hindered Adityaveer’s plans concerning Komal. It wasn't only today but had happened many times when Adityaveer thought of taking any step closer. This was the only reason arresting his happiness. The girl threw many clear hints but situations often turned unexpected. Things had always appeared pretty well, but some emotions were still unexplained, not understood and leaving him into a quandary. He had taken this girl too seriously and utterly wanted to express what he yearned. He was so determined that he had already acknowledged her as his destined wife in eternity. He got the

78 UDAYACHAL emotional strength from this girl. He believed in achieving all impossibilities with her positivity. Adityaveer had surely credited her as the woman to be held behind his awaited success. He loved her for what she was and wanted her to love him for what he had promised to be. His emotions were getting intense day by day. He was searching for the right time to finally propose the girl. But Komal didn’t took as eager or intense as Adityaveer. Komal had started to catch Adityaveer’s feeling as covetous. Perhaps, his extra carefulness was making her uncomfortable. By this time his career aspects too had started slipping by. He had already been facing issues with the subjects he had chosen. Komal had in her the answers for all his problems in life and now the sole eternal and everlasting had started to dwindle. Adityaveer had vowed to marry only if he got an ideal woman, Well when he found one alas, she was waiting for her ideal man. And this ideal man, maybe Komal herself was incapable of defining. It was termed as ‘testing time’ by some and by others ‘everything would be alright’. “ Arry! You’re so good looking, no need to fret, trust me you will get way more nice girls” asserted his friend Anandita, in all her right good will. “If today she becomes the ugliest of all women, my love for her won’t abate” Replied Adityaveer in a very agitated emotional voice. Finally the farewell day of Mayo college arrived. It was time to say good bye to the batech of 1998. Adityaveer was well dressed like he always does at high occasions. He had decided to meet Komal personally after the curtain call. He saw Komal at the event, they didn’t talk but their eyes communicated a lot. Komal was still hanging around with Rajveer Rana. She didn’t feel any concern for Adityaveer. The farewell went well, Adityaveer had cherished those last moments with his batch mates. It was now time to win Komal. He believed in victory of true love. It was the confidence he lacked at first and now this could be felt in excess. He was positive of winning her. Komal couldn’t be spotted at the exit gate so he searched for her. He spent an hour searching at the venue but all in vain. He got depressed, maybe she left early and things would now be unsaid forever. With a broken heart he reached for his car parked behind the academy wall. What he saw could have taken a life time for him to recover. Komal and Rajveer had been kissing under the same Margosa tree. The one who had warmly welcomed first didn’t even deserve a warm goodbye at last. Feedbacks would be greatly appreciated: [email protected]

Are You Ready?

When the notice for the submission of articles and columns for College magazine was first announced, I was determined I will contribute at least one article. The last date for submission was set on 9th January, 2012. I thought to myself, 'after the 3rd semester examination, during winter break, I’ll write one. The New Year arrived and last date was approaching, everyday I looked at the notice and reminded myself, I’ll write it today But I didn’t and 9th Jan passed'. I realized my chance was over and I could not submit anything for the magazine. Few days later, another notice was up stating the extension of the date for submission on 20th. I was convinced I was not going to miss this time. Just like before I didn’t and 20th passed. This time I was sure I have no chance. I was angry and sad but could not help myself. Luck favours me and another notice was up stating the last date for submission on 30th. I was overjoyed and this time I didn’t miss it. It got me thinking, why didn’t I submit it before? Why was it so hard to submit it on time? Why is everything done on the last minute? Let alone the article, almost every work I had, submission of ‘forms’ for examination, scholarship, competition and laboratory practical files, assignments, etc are done in the last minute, when it can be done at the earliest. So, to clear my doubts I did a little bit of research by reading several articles and essays written about ‘time management’ in various websites on Google. It helped me to a great extent but the real answer to my question comes from me. I realized all those days I was waiting for myself to get ready. I was waiting for the right time to write. I was scared my articles might be rejected, no one will read it, what’s the use of wasting my time, I don’t even know what to write. Everyday as I sat to write, I waited for an inspiration but since I was not inspired by anything, I kept on postponing my writing and as a result, I had nothing to offer. And so, finally at the wee hours, I sat down and started writing. Eventually I was ready. It gave me an important lesson, don’t wait till you think you are ready, because by the time you think you are ready, everyone else has done their job. Get out there and just do it. If you waste your time thinking and dreaming of doing something from your seat, you are going to end up wherever you are. Instead, do it in the time when it is right. You are ready all the time. You might not be the best at it but you will have something to smile for in the end. And you cannot please everyone nor everyone will like you but even at your worst state, I can guarantee you, atleast one soul will be pleased with whatever you are and whatever you do. If you are not convinced, you can check out the amount of people who idolized Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler for instance. You are not less than anyone else. As the saying goes “anyone who told you that you are no good, they are no better”. Rebecca Lalhruaitluangi BSc (Hons) Chemistry. IInd year
