New Delhi: Mukesh Kumar Kejariwal and Harikishan Sharma of Dainik Jagran; Pavithra S Rangan of Outlook magazine; Sandip Das of The Financial Express; Rakhi Ghosh, a freelance journalist and Atul Kumar Singh of Hindustan have been awarded the Government of India and UNDP Media Fellowships on Decentralized Planning – 2015. The media Fellowship is awarded annually for journalists to work in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The announcement was made today in New Delhi by an eminent jury comprising B.K Kuthiala, Vice Chancellor, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication; Mrinal Chatterjee, Head, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (Dhenkanal); K.S. Sachidananda, Resident Editor, Malayala Manorama and The Week; Nidhi Razdan, Senior Editor, NDTV; Indu Patnaik, Joint Adviser (MLP), NITI Aayog; Radhika Kaul Batra, UN Coordination Advisor; and Rajiv Tikoo, Director, OneWorld Foundation India. Out of the six fellows, Kejariwal, Sharma and Rangan have been selected to work in Madhya Pradesh, and Das, Ghosh and Singh are expected to work in Odisha. The working languages will be English, Hindi and Odia. The six selected Fellows will each receive a stipend of INR 150,000 plus expenses to publish news or feature stories and analytical pieces on decentralized planning over a sixmonth period. Decentralized planning and implementation is widely regarded as a powerful tool to address challenges such as poor service delivery, social exclusion and disparities across varied geographical areas and communities. Congratulating the winners, Jaco Cilliers, Resident Representative and Country Director, United Nations Development Programme, said, “The Government of India and UNDP Media Fellowships on Decentralization announced today recognise the crucial role of the media in reporting on development issues and decentralization. We hope that these Fellowships will help journalists in reporting on important challenges facing India today and in the future.” Instituted by the NITI Aayog, Government of India and UNDP, and managed by OneWorld Foundation India, the aim of the fellowship is to strengthen public awareness and engagement on issues of decentralized planning.
