(the parish office is located at the rear of St. Kevin’s Presbytery) Reflection: Power Over Death

As Jesus entered the town of Nain a sad sight confronted him - a funeral procession. Any funeral scene is sad. But this one was particularly sad. It involved the death of a young man, the only son of his widowed mother.

On seeing the sorrowing widow, Jesus was moved with compassion. He approached her and said ‘Do not cry.’ Then he restored the boy to life, and gave him back to his sorrowing mother.

The raising of the young man was a mighty deed. We are told that those who witnessed it were filled with awe. They recognised that the hand of God was in it, and hailed Jesus as a great prophet. (No doubt the miracle reminded them of Elijah, who raised a young man from the dead, as we hear in the first reading).

What are we to make of this miracle? Luke’s main aim is to highlight the compassion of Jesus, which is one of the major themes of his Gospel. Here he portrays Jesus as someone who is deeply affected by human suffering, and shows his concern for a grieving widow.

But the miracle was more that that. We have to see it in the context of the Gospel as a whole, and in the light of what Jesus was about. In it we see, not just his compassion, but also his power over death, far greater even that that of Elijah. The raising of the young man foreshadows Jesus’ gift of eternal life to all who believe in him.

The young man got some more years added to his earthly life. But Jesus didn’t come into this world to add a few more years to our earthly existence. Fortunately that happens regularly in our hospitals. There people are brought back from the brink of death, and in some cases even resuscitated.

Jesus came on earth to give the life that cannot be touched by death, the kind of life that only God possesses, and that he as God’s Son makes possible for those who believe in him.

Those who believe in Jesus and who follow him enter into a relationship with God that death cannot end.

Before Jesus could confer eternal life on us, he first had to undergo death himself. By rising from the dead in our humanity, he broke the power of death forever. For Christians, joy is found in the fact that the thing we fear most (death) has been overcome in Christ.

The Gospel story shows that Jesus understands the anguish caused by death. He experienced it himself. He overcame death, not by avoiding it, but by undergoing it and triumphing over it. A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just!
