Any funeral scene is sad. But this one was particularly sad. It involved the death of a young man, the only son of his widowed mother. On seeing the sorrowing widow, Jesus was moved with compassion. He approached her and said ‘Do not cry.’ Then he restored the boy to life, and gave him back to his sorrowing mother. The raising of the young man was a mighty deed. We are told that those who witnessed it were filled with awe. They recognised that the hand of God was in it, and hailed Jesus as a great prophet. (No doubt the miracle reminded them of Elijah, who raised a young man from the dead, as we hear in the first reading).
