We are blessed as breeders to be in a Great Breed of Cattle, and to watch the demand for cattle grow around the world. Looking back over the last 35 years of Cox Excalibur being in the cattle business, I don’t think I have seen a better time to be in the cattle business and especially Red and Black Brangus. The demand is not just for BEEF, but also our Breed of cattle. Breeders around the world are catching on to these cattle that will grow on grass in hot, humid, tropical climates, where the largest percent of cattle are in the world. Breeders and cattleman are also noticing how well these cattle grade and perform. Selling pounds of beef that can marble will produce a product that the customer and packers are demanding. Brangus and Red Brangus fit that demand. Take a close look at how the cattle are scanning with ultrasound and with the majority of our cattle coming in with the right size ribeye area (REA), high intramuscular fat (IMF) and very low back fat (BF). These traits are hereditary and impor - tant to the growth of our Breed since the marketplace is demanding tenderness and high quality CX Legends Dream 3/B1 beef. Cattleman are beginning to realize the importance of the Brangus cow especially in the hot humid climates where the majority of cattle are raised. With the growing population around the world and the demand for beef growing, that has kept prices high and probably going higher. The seed stock business has always bene - fited after a herd reduction and we have been seeing that in the demand for bulls and the prices being high - er than normal. Even the prices for heifers have risen with new and old breeders wanting more of our genetics in Red and Black Brangus from Mexico, South America, South Africa and Central America. We encourage you to stay focused on breeding better cattle, and collecting data to support your program. Starting with better cattle and genetics always makes it easier to be successful. Don’t be tempted to fill your pasture with numbers, fill it with quality, it will pay you more in the long run. Over the last 35 years we at Cox Excalibur are thankful for our repeat customers and the new breeders selecting us to help them get started in Red Brangus. A new addition to Cox Excalibur is we are now offering our Black Brangus customers a choice on genetics we have been developing and breeding for over 20 years. It topped all breed sales in Houston for the second year in a row and reflected the strong global demand for Brangus germplasm. Held following IBBA’s Global Roundup, it provided an excellent social setting for Brangus breeders to renew acquaintances, visit with old friends and to power up their breeding programs through purchases of elite cattle and genetics. The sale established a torrid pace from the beginning as the first three lots in the ring fetched $178,000 between them. At $70,000, two lots took home high selling female honors. Lot 5, Ms Brinks Brightside 415R23, consigned by Draggin M Ranch, El Dorado, Arkansas sold for the bid price to Bushley Creek Cattle Co and Cross N Brangus, Olla, La. This powerful female is averaging over 18 embryos per flush and is the dam of the $73,000 Dynasty bull, last fall’s high selling herd sire prospect.     HISTORY OF IBBA How It All Began A review of the development of the Brangus breed would take us back beyond the founding of the American Brangus Breeders Association in 1949; however, registered Brangus descend from the foundation animals recorded that year or registered Brahman and Angus cattle enrolled since then. Much of the early work in crossing Angus and Brahman cattle was done at the USDA Experiment Station at Jeanerette, Louisiana -- the first crosses being made as far back as 1912. During the same period, Clear Creek Ranch of Welch, Oklahoma, the Essar Ranch of San Antonio, Texas, and a few individual breeders in other parts of the United States and Canada were also carrying on private experimental breeding programs. They were looking for a desirable beef-type animal that would retain the Brahman's natural ability to thrive under adverse conditions in combination with the excellent qualities for which the Angus was noted. The early breeders from 16 states and Canada met in Vinita, Oklahoma on July 19, 1949, and organized the American Brangus Breeders Association, later renamed the International Brangus Breeders Association, with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. One day following the formation of the American Brangus Breeders Association, the July 30, 1949 edition of the Vinita Daily Journal, Vinita, Oklahoma, published a front page article entitled "Pope is named president of Brangus Group." The article went on to read: "Other officers elected here as cattle organization is set up. Raymond Pope, co-owner and manager of Clear Creek Ranch in Northern Craig County was elected president of the American Brangus Breeders Association at the organization meeting for the group held Friday afternoon in Vinita.
