We invite three artists to live and work for one month in one of these islands: São Miguel, Terceira, and Flores. The selected artists should produce artistic work using the historical, social, cultural, economic, and geographic context of the islands as reference. The Contemporary Art Center will provide some information contextualizing the islands, which can be used as the starting point for the artist’s research during his or her residency. Island of Flores (Western Group) B) HISTORIC CONTEXTUALIZATION OF THE AZORES AZORES: GEOGRAPHIC, GEOLOGIC AND CLIMATIC CONFIGURATION Located in the North Atlantic Ocean at the junction between the lithospheric plates of North America, Eurasia and Africa – more precisely in the microplate of the Azores - the Azorean Archipelago is constituted by nine oceanic islands of relatively recent volcanic origin (between 0.3 and 8 million years) (Morten, et.al., 1998). Figure 1 – The Azores and their location in the Atlantic Ocean. The darkened areas on each island correspond to protected areas, based on the recent system of IUCN from Island Parks (Parques de Ilha). Beside each island there is presented its geologic age in Millions of years (Myr.) Source: Borges et. al. (2009) Geologically, the Azores can be understood as a volcanic plateau with 20-36 million years (MA); the oldest island (Santa Maria) arose approximately 8 million years ago, while the youngest island (Pico) has approximately 0.250 million years. Contrary to the Hawaiian archipelago, for example, where the islands are arranged in accordance with their chronological origin, the localization of the Azores does not show any correlation between their distances to the eruptive center and its date of emergence (França et. al., 2003) The oceanic distribution of these islands, and consequentially their relative positions, led to the establishment of the following groupings: (i) the western group, composed of the islands Flores and Corvo; (ii) central group, which includes the islands Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira and (iii) the eastern group including São Miguel, Santa Maria and the Formigas islands. The different islands appear in an alignment following a band which is generally oriented NW-SE, with an expanse of nearly 600 km (375 miles) stretching between Santa Maria and Corvo. The Azores are separated from the most westerly point of the European continent by 1392 kilometers. Their localization at an average latitude of 38° 30'N provides the archipelago with a distinctly Oceanic climate. The climate of these islands can be characterized by its thermal amenity, by the elevated index of atmospheric moisture, relatively low levels of solar exposure, regular and abundant rainfalls, and by a set of vigorous winds which surround the archipelago, accompanying the evolution of patterns of atmospheric circulation within the North Atlantic basin (Azevedo, 2001). Climactic asymmetries in the interior of each island are related not only with the shape and orientation of the elevations, as well as the superficial geologic structure, with the vegetation, and in some cases, with the reciprocal influence of neighboring islands.
