It is even more unusual when such an individual is neither monarch nor millionaire, but a minor military official serving halfway around the world from his homeland. The Frenchman Prosper Giquel was such a man. The late nineteenth century found him standing at the interface of European and Chinese civilization as China entered a new era in which the lofty isolation of the ancient empire would give way to the irresistible pressure of imperialism. In this unprecedented historical setting, Prosper Giquel's unique blend of talents enabled him to move beyond his role as an agent of imperialism to become a conduit through which cultural influences passed readily. His career dealt directly with many of the issues that subsequently emerged as the principal foci of East-West relations in the twentieth century; military cooperation, transfer of technology, language acquisition, intercultural education, and internal negotiations. His talents as a linguist and an intercultural communicator, and above all his deep human concern for the Chinese with whom he worked, enabled him to set a civilized and productive tone in East-West relations. If such a tone was disappointingly discordant in Giquel's day, today it is our best hope for intercultural cooperation. But Giquel's accomplishments came at a high cultural cost. Dealing with this issue. Dr. Leibo's work passes beyond the scope of a period study in Chinese-European relations and confronts a problem as old as the coming of foreigners to China: sinicization. Like many who had arrived before him to change China, Giquel succumbed, after prolonged exposure, to the powerfully seductive forces of Chinese civilization. Cultural influences gradually mitigated his imperialist biases and molded his perspective in ways that ultimately led his countrymen to view him as a cultural defector to the Chinese. Students of late nineteenth-century China will find fresh perspectives in this volume on many of the major events of that era. Employing Giquel's personal diary and extensive correspondence gleaned from major European archives, Leibo retraces Giquel's involvement with China from viii Transferring Technology to China the occupation of Guangzhou in 1858 to the Sino-French War of the mid-1880s. We see the Sino-French contingent that aided in pacification of the Taipings as a crucible in which the Chinese and foreign components of the Self-strengthening Movement were fused. We view the giant Fuzhou Dockyard, as its founders did, as an educational institution. And we learn of a Chinese educational mission to Europe that was a quiet success. In contemporary East-West relations there is probably no issue more pressing than the transfer of technology. Like the Self-strengthening Movement of the nineteenth century, the Four Modernizations Campaign, the principal economic policy of the People's Republic of China, is heavily dependent on the acquisition and assimilation of foreign technology. There is no place better than the pages of history in which to discover the pitfalls that can beset this complex intercultural process. Giquel's activities in China provide a close view of the transfer of technology with its many frustrations and infrequent satisfactions. The significance of this study for those involved in technical and educational relations with China can hardly be overstated. In these pages the reader will find an unexpected bonus, the unfolding of an intensely human drama. Giquel's career in China, an unending struggle for the advancement of the Chinese, culminated with cruel irony. In 1884 French ships laid waste the Fuzhou Dockyard, the principal monument to this Frenchman's labors for his adopted homeland. In the last months of his life, however, Giquel must have been heartened by the news that Franco-Chinese relations had been re-established and that a new educational mission had set out for Europe. Dr. Leibo began this study as a doctoral dissertation in the Department of History at Washington State University. He brought to his work a rich background in European history and languages and a keen understanding of the development of modern China. His discovery of Giquel's personal papers and his careful and comprehensive use of European archival materials have resulted in a study of Sino-Western interaction that abounds with new information for the specialist. The general reader will find his analyses of intercultural problems provocative and a valuable mirror for contemporary events. Thomas L. This will be my fourth and final PMUNC. My name is Nicholas Wu, and I’m a senior in the Woodrow Wilson School, pursuing certificates in American Studies and East Asian Studies. It’s my honor to chair this year’s crisis committee on the Taiping Rebellion. It’s a conflict that fascinates me. The Taiping Rebellion was the largest civil war in human history, but it barely receives any attention in your standard world history class. Which is a shame — it’s a multilayered conflict. There are ethnic, economic, and religious issues at play, as well as significant foreign involvement. I hope that you all find it as interesting as I do. On campus, I’m currently figuring out how to write my thesis, and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to be researching the implementation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).     WHOSE HISTORY AND BY WHOM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORY OF TAIWAN IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE PUBLISHED IN THE POSTWAR ERA by LIN-MIAO LU (Under the Direction of Joel Taxel) ABSTRACT Guided by the tenet of sociology of school knowledge, this study examines 38 Taiwanese children’s trade books that share an overarching theme of the history of Taiwan published after World War II to uncover whether the seemingly innocent texts for children convey particular messages, perspectives, and ideologies selected, preserved, and perpetuated by particular groups of people at specific historical time periods. By adopting the concept of selective tradition and theories of ideology and hegemony along with the analytic strategies of constant comparative analysis and iconography, the written texts and visual images of the children’s literature are relationally analyzed to determine what aspects of the history and whose ideologies and perspectives were selected (or neglected) and distributed in the literary format. Central to this analysis is the investigation and analysis of the interrelations between literary content and the issue of power. Closely related to the discussion of ideological peculiarities, historians’ research on the development of Taiwanese historiography also is considered in order to examine and analyze whether the literary products fall into two paradigms: the Chinese-centric paradigm (Chinese-centricism) and the Taiwanese-centric paradigm (Taiwanese-centricism). Analysis suggests a power-and-knowledge nexus that reflects contemporary ruling groups’ control in the domain of children’s narratives in which subordinate groups’ perspectives are minimalized, whereas powerful groups’ assumptions and beliefs prevail and are perpetuated as legitimized knowledge in society.

McMahon Ying Zhang Copyright by Chad Michael Berry 2014 Abstract In March 1879, Japan announced the end of the Ryukyu (Liuqiu) Kingdom and the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture in its place. For the previous 250 years, Ryukyu had been a quasi-independent tribute-sending state to Japan and China. Following the arrival of Western imperialism to East Asia in the 19th century, Japan reacted to the changing international situation by adopting Western legal standards and clarifying its borders in frontier areas such as the Ryukyu Islands. China protested Japanese actions in Ryukyu, though Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) leaders were not willing to go to war over the islands. Instead, Qing leaders such as Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) and Prince Gong (1833-1898) sought to resolve the dispute through diplomatic means, including appeals to international law, rousing global public opinion against Japan, and, most significantly, requesting the mediation of the United States and former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885). Initially, China hoped Grant’s mediation would lead to a restoration of the previous arrangement of Ryukyu being a dually subordinate kingdom to China and Japan. In later negotiations, China sought a three-way division of the islands among China, Japan, and Ryukyu.

PAINE The Far Eastern geopolitical environment of the 1930s was characterized by systemic Chinese instability from an interminable civil war, growing Soviet missionary activities to promote communism, and a collapse of Asian trade brought on by the Great Depression. While Western attention remained rivet- ed on the more local problems of German compliance with the settlement terms of World War I and a depression that seemed to defy all conventional reme- dies, Japan focused with increasing horror on events in China. Japanese poli- cymakers had great difficulty communicating to their Western counterparts their sense of urgency concerning the dangers presented by the unfolding events in Asia. Their task was greatly complicated by the many myths obscuring the true nature of Russo-Chinese relations. These myths then distorted foreign understanding of Sino-Japanese relations. Russia is not usually considered in the context of the Far East. Both of its modern capitals – St. Petersburg and Moscow – are in Europe, its primary cul- tural ties are also with Europe, and yet much of its territory lies beyond the Ural Mountains in the Far East.

Part of that vision is developing a sound relationship with the owners of the Old Post Home at 209 Fuzhou Lu, Shanghai and establishing a long-term sustainable Post presence in China. We’ve achieved tangible results in that arena. During the second week of December 2019, Joe Gentile and I traveled to China with the hopes of opening a dialog between the Director of Cultural resources, Shanghai, the U.S. Consulate and China Post 1. Isolating himself within his family compound in the capital, Chao engaged in rigorous textual study, gymnastic exercises, and various forms of meditation that were designed to prolong his life, calm his mind, and facilitate his realization of the Dao. Chao eschewed rigid sectarianism and he utilized the teachings and practices of Buddhism, Daoism, and Con- fucianism to help him realize these objectives. Furthermore, he wrote about his post-retirement activities in detail, penning three separate texts in which he recorded his observations on the Three Teachings, the term traditionally used to refer to those three major practices, and their utility in furthering his efforts to cultivate the self. Chao’s texts — Zhaode xinbian 昭德新編 (New Compilation from Zhaode), Fazang suijin lu 法藏碎金錄 (Record of Golden Fragments from the Buddhist Canon), and Daoyuan ji 道院集 (The Daoist Cloister Collection) — contain a wealth of material on his conception of the Three Teachings and their methods of practice. As the most detailed and comprehensive literati statement on these matters surviving from the early Song, Chao’s works consti- tute an invaluable source for understanding early-Song approaches to the Three Teachings and self-cultivation. Yet, despite the intrinsic interest of these works and their po- tential to shed light on the early Song intellectual milieu, they have not attracted much scholarly attention.

    ABSTRACT Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan and Its Impact on the Taiping Movement Sukjoo Kim, Ph.D. Mentor: Rosalie Beck, Ph.D. Scholars of the Taiping Movement have assumed that Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan 勸世良言 (Good Words to Admonish the Age, being Nine Miscellaneous Christian Tracts) greatly influenced Hong Xiuquan, but very little has been written on the role of Liang’s work. The main reason is that even though hundreds of copies were distributed in the early nineteenth century, only four survived the destruction which followed the failure of the Taiping Movement. This dissertation therefore explores the extent of the Christian influence of Liang’s nine tracts on Hong and the Taiping Movement. This study begins with an introduction to China in the nineteenth century and the early missions of western countries in China. The second chapter focuses on the life and work of Liang. His religious background was in Confucianism and Buddhism, but when he encountered Robert Morrison and William Milne, he identified with Christianity. The third chapter discusses the story of Hong especially examining Hong’s acquisition of Liang’s Quanshi liangyan and Hong’s revelatory dream, both of which serve as motives for the establishment of the Society of God Worshippers and the Taiping Movement. The fourth chapter develops Liang’s key ideas from his Quanshi liangyan and compares them with Hong’s beliefs, as found in official documents of the Taipings. The fifth chapter describes Hong’s beliefs and the actual practices of the Taiping Movement and compares them with Liang’s key ideas.
