Synopsis Act I Legendary Peking. Outside the Imperial Palace, a mandarin reads an edict to the crowd: Any prince seeking to marry Princess Turandot must answer three riddles. If he fails, he will die. The most recent suitor, the Prince of Persia, is to be executed at the moon’s rising. Among the onlookers are the slave girl Liù, her aged master, and the young Calàf, who recognizes the old man as his long-lost father, Timur, vanquished King of Tartary. Only Liù has remained faithful to the king, and when Calàf asks her why, she replies that once, long ago, Calàf smiled at her. The mob cries for blood but greets the rising moon with a sudden fearful reverence. As the Prince of Persia goes to his death, the crowd calls upon the princess to spare him. Turandot appears in her palace and wordlessly orders the execution to proceed. Transfixed by the beauty of the unattainable princess, Calàf decides to win her, to the horror of Liù and Timur. Three ministers of state, Ping, Pang, and Pong, appear and also try to discourage him, but Calàf is unmoved. He reassures Liù, then strikes the gong that announces a new suitor. Act II Within their private apartments, Ping, Pang, and Pong lament Turandot’s bloody reign, hoping that love will conquer her and restore peace. Their thoughts wander to their peaceful country homes, but the noise of the crowd gathering to witness the riddle challenge calls them back to reality. In the royal throne room, the old emperor asks Calàf to reconsider, but the young man will not be dissuaded. -

Angelica Forti-Lewis Mito, spettacolo e società: Il teatro di Carlo Gozzi e il femminismo misogino della sua Turandot Alla Commedia dell'Arte Carlo Gozzi si rifece, almeno inizialmente, perché gli offriva uno spettacolo da contrastare al teatro di Goldoni, di Chiari e, più tardi, al nuovo dramma borghese e alla comédie larmoyante. A questo scopo l'Improvvisa poteva offrirgli aiuti preziosi: la teatralità pura degli intrecci, svincolati da ogni rapporto con la vita reale e contemporanea; le Maschere, cioè tipizzazioni astrat- te; il buffonesco delle trovate comiche che, insieme alle maschere, escludeva ogni possibile idealizzazione delle classi inferiori, degradate a oggetto di comico; e, infine, il carattere nazionale della Commedia, che escludeva qualsiasi intrusione forestiera. Ma anche se Gozzi si erge a strenuo difensore della Commedia dell'Arte, è chiaro che le sue fiabe hanno in realtà ben poco a che fare con l'Improvvisa e il loro tono, sempre dominato da personaggi seri, è ben più drammatico, mentre le varie trame non sono ricavate dalla solita tradizione scenica ma da racconti ita- liani ed orientali, nel loro adattamento teatrale parigino della Foire. L'esotismo e la magia, inoltre, erano anch'essi elementi ignoti alla Commedia dell'Arte e la lo- ro fusione con la continua polemica letteraria sono chiara indicazione di come il commediografo fosse ben altro che un mero restauratore di scenari improvvisati. Trionfano nelle fiabe i valori tradizionali, dall'amor coniugale {Re Cervo, Tu- randot, Donna serpente e Mostro Turchino), all'amore fraterno, la fedeltà e la virtù della semplicità (Corvo, Pitocchi fortunati e Zeim re de' Geni). -

Their polemical relationship has been the object of many studies, but there is a dearth of work dedicated to their narratives and novels, with none in English language scholarship, though a small and growing number of Italian studies of the novelistic genre in eighteenth-century Italy has emerged in recent years. In my dissertation entitled, Polemics and the Rise of the Venetian Novel: Pietro Aretino, Piero Chiari, and Carlo Gozzi, I examine the evolution of the Italian novel in a Venetian context in which authors, some through translation, some through new work, vie ii among themselves for the center in the contest to provide literary models that will shape and educate the Venetian subject. -

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below). -

PERGOLESI GIOVANNI BATTISTA Compositore italiano (Iesi, Ancona, 4 I 1710 - Pozzuoli, Napoli, 17 III 1736) 1 Il bisnonno, F. Draghi, si era trasferito, intorno al 1635, da Pergola a Iesi. Il suo primogenito, Cruciano, sposò una donna di Iesi. Dall'ora la famiglia si chiamò Pergolesi e con questo nome anche Giovanni Battista Pergolesi firma, per esempio, il frontespizio dello Stabat Mater ed il Laudate pueri; perciò la grafia Pergolesi deve considerarsi autentica. Fin da fanciullo fu di gracile costituzione e soffrì ad una gamba. I suoi fratelli morirono giovani. Il ragazzo godette la protezione della piccola nobiltà di Iesi, ricevette il primo insegnamento di violino da F. Mondini, proveniente da Bologna e direttore della cappella comunale di Iesi, mentre il direttore della cappella del duomo, F. Santi, gli insegnò il contrappunto. A Iesi, come hanno accertato gli storici musicali locali, erano frequenti le esecuzioni pubbliche di drammi e di intermezzi, nel palazzo municipale, e probabilmente il giovane Pergolesi vi poté ascoltare musiche di A. Scarlatti e di A. Caldara. Secondo G. Santini, sarebbe stato il marchese Cardolo Maria Pianetti a mandare a Napoli il ragazzo per completarne l'istruzione. Studiò comunque nel conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo (lo si ritrova sotto il nome di "Iesi" nelle liste, del resto lacunose, a partire dal 1725) ed entrò nella classe di violino diretta da D. De Matteis. Ma il suo talento si rivelò più rapidamente nella classe di composizione di G. Greco (fino al 1728) e poi di F. Durante, mentre la sua più vasta cerchia d'interessi si estendeva a F. -

In an allegory objects, persons, and actions are metaphors or symbols for ideas that lie outside the text. Medieval drama was wrapped in the stories and doctrines of the medieval Christian church. Most plays could be classified as Mystery Plays - plays that told the stories of the Bible, Miracle Plays - plays that told the stories of saints and martyrs, and Morality plays - allegorical works that sought to convey a moral or some doctrine of the church. Everyman is perhaps the most famous of this last category. -
The Ode As a Genre in the Latin Poetry of Jan Kochanowski (Lyricorum Libellus)*
TERMINUS Vol. 20 (2018), Special Issue, pp. 1–21 doi:10.4467/20843844TE.18.009.9892 www.ejournals.eu/Terminus http://orcid.org/0000-0002-6919-9105 Elwira Buszewicz Jagiellonian University in Kraków [email protected] The Ode as a Genre in the Latin Poetry of Jan Kochanowski (Lyricorum libellus)* Abstract The aim of this study is to establish the place of Jan Kochanowski’s Lyricorum li- bellus (1580) in the history of Polish Renaissance neo-Latin ode presented against a wider European background. The development of this genre in this historico-lit- erary period in Poland has received only fragmentary reporting, e.g. in relation to Horatianism in literature or as a background for the vernacular ode. Yet, as Carol Maddison argues in her Apollo and the Nine, the Neo-Latin ode is, in a sense, a new genre revived and newly “devised” by Renaissance humanists. In her fundamental work, Maddison also presents the development of the ode and its variations in Italy and France. According to ancient patterns used by poets, Horatian odes (includ- ing Kochanowski’s odes) can be divided into the “Pindaric” and the “Anacreontic- Sapphic.” This division coincides to some extent with the classification of odes as “political” or “private.” Similar categorisation criteria adopted by various research- ers (Zofia Głombiowska, Jacqueline Glomski, Józef Budzyński) may result in indi- vidual odes being assigned to several different categories. The first part of this paper, therefore, emphasises the identity of the NeoLatin ode and its status as a new genre strongly related to Renaissance Humanism. In the second part, the author attempts to assign particular poems from Lyricorum libellus to patterns indicated by Mad- dison, and deals with previous attempts at classification based on differentiating be- tween political and private odes. -

Andrzej Gil IEŚW Lublin Jan Zamoyski wobec zagadnień wyznaniowych na przykładzie Zamościa przełomu XVI i XVII wieku Postać Jana Zamoyskiego stała się swego rodzaju ikoną historyczną, obrosłą różnego rodzaju legendami i mitami. Pod kolejnymi nawarstwieniami, narosłymi w ciągu wieków, ukryty został obraz realnego człowieka, kierującego się swoim rozumieniem świata. Sternik nawy państwowej, orędownik wolności szlacheckiej, twórca ogromnego latyfundium miał także swoje poglądy, które wpływały na podejmowane przezeń inicjatywy. Niezmiernie interesujące wydaje się określenie faktycznego stosunku Jana Zamoyskiego wobec ludzi innego wyznania i narodowości. Jest to o tyle fascynujące, bowiem Zamoyski miał doskonałą sposobność zamanifestowania swoich poglądów w tej dziedzinie w czasie budowy Zamościa. Podjęcie dzieła wzniesienia od podstaw miasta, odmienne przecież od tworzenia ordynacji, budowanej przede wszystkim w oparciu o istniejący już potencjał osadniczy, dawało sposobność nie tylko do zademonstrowania sprawności adaptacji klasycznych idei przestrzennych (renesansowe miasto idealne) oraz militarnych (nowoczesna architectura militaris), ale także, a może przede wszystkim, okazania stosunku do pojmowania i rozumienia przez niego wizji idealnej społeczności miejskiej (swego rodzaju idealna communa civitas). Nie był bowiem Jan Zamoyski w swej decyzji o nadaniu miastu określonego charakteru etnicznego i wyznaniowego zależny od nikogo, poza swoim rozumieniem rzeczywistości i kierowaniem się własnymi w tej mierze przemyśleniami. The family is thought originally to have come from Corsica. Though reasonably well-off in their day, the Busonis fell on hard times, and upon the father’s death, moved to Empoli. Additional misfortune followed when the second son of three, Giovanni Battista also died later of a long illness in 1860, his wife following shortly thereafter. From this group of three sons, it would be the eldest, Ferdinando who would produce the artist the world learned to know and cherish. In Empoli his siblings became prosperous makers of felt hats, but Ferdinando would have none of that. He hid himself in corners to read the classics and practice the clarinet. Nothing would alter his intention to be a musician of prominence; he was capricious, self-willed, hot-tempered and impatient. These qualities would, lifelong, result in a reputation as difficult, highly-strung, opinionated, quarrelsome and to some a jeffatore...the possessor of the “evil eye.” He was largely self-taught, attained a high degree of proficiency on his instrument, adopted a career as a travelling virtuoso.
