MESTO a DEJINY János Perényi, Master of the Treasury and his Relationship with the Upper-Hungarian Cities (1438–1458) Ádám Novák vol. 5, 2016, 1, pp. 76-88 In this paper the author focuses on the career of János Perényi (†1458), Master of the Treasury and his peculiarly long activity as Master of the Treasury which lasted for nearly twenty years. This paper aims to draw a sketch of the activities of Perényi as Treasurer and to examine his relationship with the Upper-Hungarian cities in the years 1438 – 1458. The thesis is based on the materials kept in the archives of the Upper-Hungarian cities. Most of the documents issued by the Treasurer were missile letters addressed to the cities under his jurisdiction, and privilege letters which included the decisions of the Court of the Master of the Treasurer. We can sporadically find receipts, which prove the acceptance of the sums paid to the Treasurer. However, we cannot draw a full picture without examining the letters of cities, rulers, major officeholders or such noticeable characters as Governor János Hunyadi and Jan Jiskra, mercenary captain and ispán (‘sheriff’) of County Sáros (Šariš). Besides presenting the outline of his career, I also argued before on his seal usage1 and on the history of his family’s land tenure.2 In my present paper I will focus on his peculiarly long activity as Master of the Treasury which lasted for nearly twenty years. -

The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -
The Ode As a Genre in the Latin Poetry of Jan Kochanowski (Lyricorum Libellus)*
TERMINUS Vol. 20 (2018), Special Issue, pp. 1–21 doi:10.4467/20843844TE.18.009.9892 www.ejournals.eu/Terminus http://orcid.org/0000-0002-6919-9105 Elwira Buszewicz Jagiellonian University in Kraków [email protected] The Ode as a Genre in the Latin Poetry of Jan Kochanowski (Lyricorum libellus)* Abstract The aim of this study is to establish the place of Jan Kochanowski’s Lyricorum li- bellus (1580) in the history of Polish Renaissance neo-Latin ode presented against a wider European background. The development of this genre in this historico-lit- erary period in Poland has received only fragmentary reporting, e.g. in relation to Horatianism in literature or as a background for the vernacular ode. Yet, as Carol Maddison argues in her Apollo and the Nine, the Neo-Latin ode is, in a sense, a new genre revived and newly “devised” by Renaissance humanists. In her fundamental work, Maddison also presents the development of the ode and its variations in Italy and France. According to ancient patterns used by poets, Horatian odes (includ- ing Kochanowski’s odes) can be divided into the “Pindaric” and the “Anacreontic- Sapphic.” This division coincides to some extent with the classification of odes as “political” or “private.” Similar categorisation criteria adopted by various research- ers (Zofia Głombiowska, Jacqueline Glomski, Józef Budzyński) may result in indi- vidual odes being assigned to several different categories. The first part of this paper, therefore, emphasises the identity of the NeoLatin ode and its status as a new genre strongly related to Renaissance Humanism. In the second part, the author attempts to assign particular poems from Lyricorum libellus to patterns indicated by Mad- dison, and deals with previous attempts at classification based on differentiating be- tween political and private odes. -

INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS ◦ RELACJE MIĘDZYKULTUROWE ◦ 2018 ◦ 2 (4) Jarosław Płuciennik1 LIBERTY, ENLIGHTENMENT, AND THE POLISH BRETHREN Abstract The article presents an overview of the history of the idea of dialogics and lib- erty of expression. This liberty is strictly tied to the problem of liberty of con- science. Since the 17th century, the development of the dialogics traveled from an apocalyptic – and demonising its opponents – discourse as in John Milton’s approach in Areopagitica, through dialogics of cooperation and obligations and laws (in the Polish Brethren, so-called Socinians, especially Jan Crell), through dialogics of deduction (transcendental deduction in Immanuel Kant), to dialog- ics of induction and creativity (John Stuart Mill). Key words: liberty of conscience, liberty of expression, Enlightenment, history of ideas, dialogue AREOPAGITICA BY JOHN MILTON AND THE APOCALYPTIC AND MARKET DIALOGICS (1644) The best starting point of my analysis is John Milton’s Areopagitica from 1644, which not only concerns liberty and freedom of speech, but also is the most famous and most extensive prose work of Milton, who has be- come world famous, above all, due to his poetry (Tazbir, 1973, p. 111). The text was published on November 23, 1644, without a license, with- out registration, without the identification of the publisher and printer, and was the first English text entirely devoted to freedom of speech and pub- lishing. Andrzej Gil IEŚW Lublin Jan Zamoyski wobec zagadnień wyznaniowych na przykładzie Zamościa przełomu XVI i XVII wieku Postać Jana Zamoyskiego stała się swego rodzaju ikoną historyczną, obrosłą różnego rodzaju legendami i mitami. Pod kolejnymi nawarstwieniami, narosłymi w ciągu wieków, ukryty został obraz realnego człowieka, kierującego się swoim rozumieniem świata. Sternik nawy państwowej, orędownik wolności szlacheckiej, twórca ogromnego latyfundium miał także swoje poglądy, które wpływały na podejmowane przezeń inicjatywy. Niezmiernie interesujące wydaje się określenie faktycznego stosunku Jana Zamoyskiego wobec ludzi innego wyznania i narodowości. Jest to o tyle fascynujące, bowiem Zamoyski miał doskonałą sposobność zamanifestowania swoich poglądów w tej dziedzinie w czasie budowy Zamościa. Podjęcie dzieła wzniesienia od podstaw miasta, odmienne przecież od tworzenia ordynacji, budowanej przede wszystkim w oparciu o istniejący już potencjał osadniczy, dawało sposobność nie tylko do zademonstrowania sprawności adaptacji klasycznych idei przestrzennych (renesansowe miasto idealne) oraz militarnych (nowoczesna architectura militaris), ale także, a może przede wszystkim, okazania stosunku do pojmowania i rozumienia przez niego wizji idealnej społeczności miejskiej (swego rodzaju idealna communa civitas). Nie był bowiem Jan Zamoyski w swej decyzji o nadaniu miastu określonego charakteru etnicznego i wyznaniowego zależny od nikogo, poza swoim rozumieniem rzeczywistości i kierowaniem się własnymi w tej mierze przemyśleniami. Eos C 2013 / fasciculus extra ordinem editus electronicus ISSN 0012-7825 ANCIENT CULTURE IN POLAND: A MILLENNIUM* By MARIAN PLEZIA Among the profusion of millennial spectacles which our country celebrated, particularly in the last year, it is certainly strange that the milestone of a thou- sand years since the appearance of ancient culture in Poland passed by unsung and unremebered1. And yet this is a very lofty aspect of the Polish millennium, an aspect that, without exaggeration, can be considered as important as the mil- lennium of the Polish state or of the Polish Church. For it is only from the time that the noble bough of Rome was grafted onto the ancient native trunk of Slavic custom and way of life that national Polish culture as it still exists today began to take form. Just as the golden bough of the Cumaean Sybil opened for Aeneas the way to the underworld where, in the intention of the poet, he would see not only his dead father but the entire many-centuried span of his nation’s future, so for us this engrafting into the Latin culture opened the way to higher forms of civilization in which we only then gained a share – for the entire one thousand years which is now reaching its completion. It is not difficult to comprehend the epochal importance of the breakthrough that took place one thousand years ago. It was only with Latin culture that the use of writing reached us, possibly the greatest writing any civilization has pro- duced until now, since before our very eyes it is spreading across the world as the most suitable for use. -

Voltaire2 Abstract Socinians were members of the specific radical Reformation international religious group that was formed originally in Poland and in Transylvania in the XVIth century and went beyond the limited scope of the reform initiated by Luther or Calvin. At the roots of their religious doctrines was the Antitrinitarianism developed by Michael Servetus (1511-1553) and transplanted by Italian Humanists, as well as the social ideas borrowed initially from the Anabaptists and Moravian Brethren. They called themselves Christians or Brethren, hence Polish Brethren, also Minor Reformed Church. Their opponents labeled them after the old heresies as Sabellians, Samosatinians, Ebionites, Unitarians, and finally Arians. They were also known abroad as Socinians, after the Italian Faustus Socinus (1539-1604) (Fausto Sozzini, nephew of Lelio Sozzini) who at the end of the XVIth century became a prominent figure in the Raków Unitarian congregation for systematizing the doctrines of the Polish Brethren. Although the spirit of religious liberty was one of the elements of the Socinian doctrine, the persecution and coercion they met as a result of the Counter Reformation led them to formulate the most advanced ideas in the realm of human freedom and church-state relations.
