COLLEGE ANDUNIVERSITY EXTENSION HELPS IN ADULT EDUCATION

The American people have moreleisure thaneverbefore. SThis leisure is the fruit of the organization ofsociety and of labor-saving -machinery.What is to be done with it is prob.ably the most im- portant questionin America to-day.If the free time is spent by individuals in self-improvement and inlearning how to cooperate withothers,civilizationwill improve and democracywillbe strengthened.. ..To the degree that leisure is not well spentindividuals sand civilization will decline,asthey. did in former periods of history . whenleisurewas spentin self-indulgerice.

It is most importantthat: all agencies which tendtoencouragethee individual to develop himself during adulthood,aswellasin youth, should be strengthened.Among the foremost 'agencies that give promise in the education of adults is universityextension.The general public has much to gain byaninvittigation of what educa- tional institutions haverooffer.Asanillustration of this fact the writer,ashort timeago, wasinacity which is the home ofawell- known .Hewasinvited byafriend,abusi- ness man, toattendalectureonapplied psychology, byanitinerant lecturer.The lecture hallwasfilled with businessmenandwomen each of whom had paid $40-foraseries of lectures running through four weeks.Thelecture wai full of platitudes and promises.The lecturer is saidto have received $10,000inonem"onth for psychological ' information and misinformation. Therewerein the local institution mentioned two nationally known pssychologists either of whomntit only knew4much in'ore .,psychology butwas a moreentertaining speakér than. the itinerant, .self-advertised lecturer.If tli.se businessme and women 'had known the facts, tfiey would have ,used' theirowninstitution and gottenareliable leader in the study of psychology.The pity of the situation is,not that their moriey waswasted, butihateachperson who took thiscourseof pseudo-lecturesthirlksthat he knows much about the subject;when,as amatter of fact, he has received mis- information ahdmisdirection which will merely increase the difficulty

learningare giving extepsion work. %. \ The two kinds of extension workmost in demandarework bycor. respondence and workin classesheld outside ofthe institutions. Tittsetwo kinds of workarewhat is usually meantwhen people speak of univeisityextension.However, this study showsthat thereisa wide variety of 'extensiontetiviCles in idditionto the two mentioned. No doubt thereader will be greatlyimpressed with thescopeof this work, which isgrowing constantlyon accountof the ever-increwiing number of adultswho have needfor guidance intheirstudyprograms. One doesnot need to have hadanycollege workor even td have finished high schoolin orderto enroll for noncredit cetuisesthrough collegeoruniversity extension.In the Main, collegesand univer- sities endeavorto duplicate their residence workthrough extension methods, but the're isalsoastendencyto render any educational service for whichthere isademand and for ;whichtheyareequipped.. Mostcolleges and universitiesrecord credit interms of simnester hours. A semester hour is supposedto be equivalenttoonehour of class instructionperweek for 18 weeks,including the periods taken forclassorganizationat the beginning of the work and for examinationat theclose.In general,a semesterhour meaiis 16 actual class hours of instruction, kclusiveof the periods devoted to organization and examination. Communitycenters,originállycalled socialcenters,areorganiza- tions designedto increase the number and effectiveness of activitite which brinpeople ofadistrict together.The idea behindthis movement is that of securingmorecooperationamongneighborsin the solution of community problems. Toserveteachers and different community center's,manyof the extension divisions of State universitiesand colleges have provided specialists in publicrecreation and playground activitieswho give &ssistahce and adviceonthese subjects.Help is also givenin developing leaders in thevarious communitycenters of the State. Furtherto aid the community centers,someof the extension divi- sions hold conferences andinstitutes; conduct investigastns'and surveys;furnishprograms,speakers. and exhibits. Of special interest is the Olan developedby the University oi Michigan.The cooperative plan for communitycenter service wu started in 1923,at which .all the colleges and normal schools of the State entered intoatentativeagreement with the State univer- sity, through its extension division,to give such assistanceasmight lie in thepowerof the various institutionsto further community center service,piirticulalyasrelated tò smalland outlying centers. The extension division of theuniversity publishes mild distribute eachyear aspecial bulletin in whicharegiven directions for local committees with referenceto the organization of community center serviceprograms.Tlje bulletin.also contains thenames of cooperat, inginstitutions, together with thenames ofthe special chairmen who have charge of the work in therespective institutions.It is especially noteworthy that thistype of service is .the first of its kina in thiscountry inwhich there is presentedto the people ofaStatea cooperative serviceonthe part of all the educational institutions of higher learning.lt is believed that thistype of service will proveof \great value, especially to rural and outlyingcenters. .. Radio Instruction bymeansof radio is becoming general with college and university extension divisions.This method, which usually supplements the textbookorother lesson material, involves thebtold- casting by the institution of detailed iiiformationin regard to the lesson, outlining the main points, explainingthe different pasugei The student, after receiving the radio instructionand supplemea* . ,g E ;... Some of the advadtaiesof extensionwork by radioare:(1) It creates more interest and probablyreachesmany more people than does regular correspondenceinstruction.(2) Itsavestime required otherwise for transmittingthe lessonby mailto the student.(3) It enables the insiructorto give whatever emphasisis needed byusing the voice instead of thepen.(4) It enablesthe instructorto bting into his discussionmoretimely illustrationsof the subjectstudied than is possible bycorrespondencecoursesalone. Sixty-five institutionsreport theuseof radioeither in givinglectures orin conductingotheillextensionwork. That radiocourses vary widelymayheseenifoneconsiders the subjects listed by even one extension department.Since itwa&. organized fouryears ago, the division ofuniversity,extension of the MassachusettsState Departmentof FAucationhas includedin its radio'couNesthe followingsubject& Householdmanagement, appreeiationof music,contemporary American literature, short-storywriting, French,the making ofa music lover (with piano illustrations), chiefErtglish writers ofourday, businesspsychology,barnds of Englishliterature, psychologyor understandingpeople, literary vffrresin new books, journalism,new developments in economies,essentials of drama, appreciation of symphonies,real estate law,psychology ofpersonal problems. That thereare manymenandwomenin allparts of thecountry whoareinterested in radio irístructionis evidenced b-ythe fact thate. 5,000 people haveenrolled for thecoursqsgiven throughthe above- nameduniversity extensiondepartment alone.In additionto those whoareMudying by radio,the total numberof which isun- blown, thereare many thousands who listen inonthecourses given by collegesanduniversities.
