HEARN Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT To understand evolutionary patterns and processes that account for anatomical diversity in relation to ecology and life form diversity, anatomy of storage roots and stems of the genus Adenia (Passifloraceae) were analyzed using an explicit phylogenetic context. Over 65,000 measurements are reported for 47 quantitative and qualitative traits from 58 species in the genus. Vestiges of lianous ancestry were apparent throughout the group, as treelets and lianous taxa alike share relatively short, often wide, vessel elements with simple, transverse perforation plates, and alternate lateral wall pitting; fibriform vessel elements, tracheids associated with vessels, and libriform fibers as additional tracheary elements; and well-developed axial parenchyma. Multiple cambial variants were observed, including anomalous parenchyma proliferation, anomalous vascular strands, successive cambia, and a novel type of intraxylary phloem. -

Flying squirrels consumed 4 major plant parts belonging to 9 plant species. Ficus racemosa was the most-eaten species (68.1%) during the period of the study, followed by Cullenia exarillata (9.57%) and Artocarpus heterophyllus (6.38%). The most commonly consumed food item was the fruit of F. racemosa (48.93%). Leaves formed an important component of the diet (32.97%) and the leaves of F. racemosa were consumed more than those of any other species. Flying squirrels proved to be tolerant of disturbance and exploited food resources at the fragment edge, including exotic planted species. Balasubramanyan K.Swarupan andan N.Sasidharan KERALA FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE PEECHI, THRISSUR May 1985 Pages: 175 SUMMARY All the previous treatments on the Kerala trees are largely based on generative characters. But, the specimens collected may not always be with generative organs (flowers and fruits). Because of this, experimental and field biologists are often put to difficulties in their identification. Nevertheless, identification at sight, in the field, is often necessary for many practical purposes. For this, an artificial key based on vegetative characters is desirable, besides descriptive floras based niairily on gene- rative characters. To meet this need, the project was undertaken with the aim of generating a convenient key. A checklist of the dicotyledonous tree species with a minimum of 10 m height, indigenous to the Kerala forests (341 spp.), was prepared from the regional floras. Based on field observations made in the Kerala forests and studies on the collected specimens in the Institute Herbarium, Madras Herbarium (MH) and Central National Herbarium (CAL), a cardex set for characteristics of species was prepared. From this an artificial serial key based on vegetative charaoters has been compiled. A systematic compilation of the cardex data in the alphabetic sequ- ence of binomials is given at the end, for convenience. Nomenclaturally correct and taxonomically accepted binomials, whenever available the basionym, the names given in Bourdillon's The Forest Trees of Travancore (1908) and Gamble and Fisher's Flora of the Presidency of Madras (1915-1935), correct citations, the commonest Malayalani names, family name, detailed annotations of the vegetative characters, a synopsis of the generative characters, ecological details and distribution within the natural forests of the Kerala State are furnished. -

Gendered Knowledge and Changing Trends in Utilization of Wild Edible Greens in Western Ghats, India
Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge Vol. 6(1), January 2007, pp. 204-216 Gendered knowledge and changing trends in utilization of wild edible greens in Western Ghats, India M K Ratheesh Narayanan & N Anil Kumar* M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, 3rd Cross Road, Taramani Institutional Area, Chennai 600 113, Tamil Nadu Received 7 July 2006; revised 25 August 2006 The paper describes the differences and trends in the use and management of wild edible greens within and between households pertaining to three ethnic and one migrant community in Wayanad district, an agro-biodiversity hot spot in southern Western Ghats. A total of 366 people were interviewed and 20 key informants were selected from each community to examine multiple uses, preferences, marketing and local availability of edible wild greens, where 102 species were recorded. The paper discusses how gender, ethnicity, age and socio-economic status affect wild green management and household nutritional security. Women are more skillful in managing the surrounding landscape and are main knowledge holders and conservationists. The implications of land use changes, agrochemicals, restrictions on forest access and alien species invasion on the availability of wild greens are highlighted. It was found that women are taking effective steps to sustainably manage landscapes and species that provide edible greens, but changing trends in gender relations inhibit their efforts; alien species invasion and modern agri-practices lead to local extinction of many greens, and the erosion of traditional knowledge especially among youth due to materialistic life style affects the sustainable use of many wild greens. Taxonomy and Conservation Status of Pteridophyte Flora of Sri Lanka R.H.G. Ranil and D.K.N.G. Pushpakumara University of Peradeniya Introduction The recorded history of exploration of pteridophytes in Sri Lanka dates back to 1672-1675 when Poul Hermann had collected a few fern specimens which were first described by Linneus (1747) in Flora Zeylanica. The majority of Sri Lankan pteridophytes have been collected in the 19th century during the British period and some of them have been published as catalogues and checklists. However, only Beddome (1863-1883) and Sledge (1950-1954) had conducted systematic studies and contributed significantly to today’s knowledge on taxonomy and diversity of Sri Lankan pteridophytes (Beddome, 1883; Sledge, 1982). Thereafter, Manton (1953) and Manton and Sledge (1954) reported chromosome numbers and some taxonomic issues of selected Sri Lankan Pteridophytes. Recently, Shaffer-Fehre (2006) has edited the volume 15 of the revised handbook to the flora of Ceylon on pteridophyta (Fern and FernAllies). The local involvement of pteridological studies began with Abeywickrama (1956; 1964; 1978), Abeywickrama and Dassanayake (1956); and Abeywickrama and De Fonseka, (1975) with the preparations of checklists of pteridophytes and description of some fern families. Dassanayake (1964), Jayasekara (1996), Jayasekara et al., (1996), Dhanasekera (undated), Fenando (2002), Herat and Rathnayake (2004) and Ranil et al., (2004; 2005; 2006) have also contributed to the present knowledge on Pteridophytes in Sri Lanka. However, only recently, Ranil and co workers initiated a detailed study on biology, ecology and variation of tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) in Kanneliya and Sinharaja MAB reserves combining field and laboratory studies and also taxonomic studies on island-wide Sri Lankan fern flora.
