Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb Taxonomy and Nomenclature Species Name: Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. Family: Fabaceae (Papilionaceae) Vernacular (Common name): Indian Kino tree or Ma- labar Kino tree (English), Bija sal, Venga (India) Distribution and habitat: The species is distributed in tropical moist and dry de- ciduous forests of most of the Indian peninsula includ- ing the states Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Western Ghats, Kar- nataka, and Kerala of peninsular India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It grows generally on hills or undulating lands or rocky grounds up to an altitude of 150 to 1100m. The average rainfall of its habitat ranges from 750 to 2000 mm even more in southern India. The maximum temperature ranges from 35oC to 48oC and the mini- mum 0oC to 18oC. It can thrive in wide variety of soils and geographical conditions such as, gneiss, quartzite, shale, conglomerates, sandstone and lateritic. It prefers well-drained alluvial and sandy loam to loamy soil. The species is moderate light demander and the young seed- lings are frost-tender. Uses The timber is moderately heavy, strong hard, durable crown. Bark is grey, rough 1.2-1.8cm thick, longitudi- and easy to saw. It is mostly used for constructional and nally fissured, scaly, blaze pink with whitish markings. -

Accepted: 03 August 2006 ABSTRACT A comparative wood anatomical study of 28 Diospyros L. species described by earlier workers to be present in Sri Lanka was carried out. The diagnostic features of wood anatomical characters of the taxa concerned were evaluated by employing standard statistical methods such as Principal Component Analysis, Cluster Analysis and Discriminant Analysis. The Sri Lankan fraction of the genus revealed homogeneity with respect to their wood anatomical characters with a dependency range on environmental factors such as water availability. Further based on the wood anatomical characters an attempt was made to establish levels of specialization in order to understand the evolutionary relationships that exist within the species concerned. Even though the evolutionary relationships within the genus are vague, D. malabarica and D. atrata could be considered as possible ancestral forms from which the Sri Lankan endemic species of the taxon evolved. B. Todd, Jr. Boulevard, Nashville, Tennessee 37208 The Dipterocarpaceae, well-known trees of the Asian rain forests, have been variously assigned to Malvales and Theales. The family, if the Monotoideae of Africa (30 species) and South America and the Pakaraimoideae of South America (one species) are included, comprises over 500 species. Despite the high diversity and ecological dominance of the Dipterocar- paceae, phylogenetic relationships within the family as well as between dipterocarps and other angiosperm families remain poorly de®ned. We conducted parsimony analyses on rbcL sequences from 35 species to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Dipterocarpaceae. The consensus tree resulting from these analyses shows that the members of Dipterocarpaceae, including Monotes and Pakaraimaea, form a monophyletic group closely related to the family Sarcolaenaceae and are allied to Malvales. The present generic and higher taxon circumscriptions of Dipterocarpaceae are mostly in agreement with this molecular phylogeny with the exception of the genus Hopea, which forms a clade with Shorea sections Anthoshorea and Doona. Phylogenetic placement of Dipterocarpus and Dryobalanops remains unresolved. Further studies involving repre- sentative taxa from Cistaceae, Elaeocarpaceae, Hopea, Shorea, Dipterocarpus, and Dryobalanops will be necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the phylogeny and generic limits of the Dipterocarpaceae. -

A Word from the Chairman This, the 19th issue of Primate Conservation, has suffered a long delay in publication, arising to some extent from the increasingly significant role of the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group newsletters (African Primates, Asian Primates, Lemur News and Neotropical Primates), which are themselves evolving into journals in their own right, but also related to uncertainty as to its future. Its production is informal, and each issue requires funding in direct competition with the newsletters. Primate Conservation has played a key role in allowing for the publication of highly significant conservation-related research, most especially distribution and status surveys, which were difficult to publish elsewhere, and with the added advantage of it being distributed for free. Today, however, the more formal subscription journals, notably the International Journal of Primatology, the official journal of the International Primatological Society (IPS), increasingly publish conservation-related research (note IJPs earmarking of the aye-aye with its “Vivamus” sign). -

The holy shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa is situated 914 metres above sea level amidst dense forests in the rugged terrains of the Western Ghats. Lord Ayyappa is looked upon as the guardian of mountains and there are several shrines dedicated to him all along the Western Ghats. The festivals here are the Mandala Pooja, Makara Vilakku (December/January) and Vishu Kani (April). The temple is also open for pooja on the first 5 days of every Malayalam month. The vehicles go only up to Pampa and the temple, which is situated 5 km away from Pampa, can be reached only by trekking. During the festival period there are frequent buses to this place from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam. This paper describes the fruiting phenology of 110 individuals of woody species belonging to 22 taxa (21 species, 1 variety) belonging to 15 families including 2 species of figs in a scrub forest, Thiruporur, Eastern Ghats. Fruiting peak was observed during July 2009 with 11 species in fruiting, a dip was observed during March 2009 where only 2 species were in fruiting. Season wise fruiting peak was observed during South-west and North-east Monsoon while the dip was during summer. 1.INTRODUCTION Phenology is the study of relationship between climatic factors and periodic phenomena in organisms. Periodic behaviour of plants in tropical environments has received much attention in recent years. Tropical forests with their high level of species diversity, display phenological events such as leaf drop, leaf flushing, flowering and fruiting, etc. in relation to time and space [1]. Study of such events is useful in evolving proper management strategy as well as better understanding of natural forest regeneration potential and community level interactions [2]. -
