This unity stems from its roots which, most likely, lie in pagan Roman winter festivals that were assimilated by the early Christian church in order to baptise the Roman ceremonies. Due to this mix of older pagan customs and traditions with Christian theology, Christmas is a celebration which predominantly deals with cultural memory. Legendary figures like Father Christmas stem from earlier cultural traditions and archetypes. Literary realisations of Christmas also incorporate this harmonising of cultural and religious components. This thesis analyses Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843), John Masefield’s The Box of Delights (1935), and Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising (1973). The analysis focusses on how these three books embody the afore-mentioned unity. Another aspect which this thesis explores is how these texts make use of memory, both cultural and personal, in relation to Christmas. They were facing a life where they made their own destiny – for better or worse. They didn’t know what they were doing, any more than any of us – less than us, since they were the first people to face problems! All they knew was that they didn’t want God to decide for them. Adam and Eve were suddenly faced with the great questions that their children have been trying to find answers to ever since; Who am I? Why am I here? How can I live after death? How can I be blessed without repenting and obeying the God who drove me from Eden? So try to picture yourself as an intelligent, reasoning individual seeking meaning for your life. What causes drought? What causes disease? You obviously know nothing of germs and hygiene, weather patterns and sunspots. All you know is that sometimes bad things happen and sometimes good things happen. More importantly, what happens when you die? Put yourself in Adam’s shoes. How do you find hope for your eternal future without God? To answer these questions, they had only the world around them, things they could see and touch. And if you stop and think about it, putting aside religion, mysticism, and tradition, all good things in our universe can ultimately be traced to a single source. Condolences to the members of the Northeast who did not get their heraldry into the competition. It is a shame that the Northeast decided not to compete. Perhaps next year. Judges will be receiving the entries during the month of July and winning chapters will be announced at Imperial War 2010. June saw the re-launch of the College of Arms website and the beginning of a massive update to bring the data current. Looking forward, we should have the database completely updated and working in real-time by the end of July. The website features a visual armorial, roll of arms and real-time ordinary as well as a very robust search function and visual comparison tool.

Given that such goals are socially unacceptable, and often illegal, extremist speech communities need to camouflage their politics by either shifting the context in which they take place (e.g. private meetings, encrypted communications) or by coding and cloaking their terminology and symbols. Codes, euphemisms and veiled signs are therefore a defining feature of online extremist discourse.1 2 The use of such codes serves a range of interpersonal, rhetorical and political functions. First, codes help to ensure that communication remains within accepted (typically legal) boundaries. These codes shift over time, partly because what is socially and/or legally proscribed changes. Second, since codes essentially offer a new way to convey political extremism, they signal the continued advocacy of a political ideology for those able to interpret the code. Just as a party logo might change but will continue to represent the party in question, so too a new word, image or meme can communicate an established ideological commitment.

    Klansville U.S.A.: Symbols Have More than One Meaning TRANSCRIPT NARRATOR: The Ku Klux Klan has been around since the 1860s, but many of the symbols that you might recognize and associate with the group have been around far longer, and have origin stories that have nothing do with the KKK or even with race. Take the white robes and pointed hats. Klan members started wearing them to intimidate others and to help obscure members' identities. But in ancient times, the pointed hat was worn to denote shame, often in public. Today, Spanish penitents wear capirotes while walking through the streets during Holy Week, publicly repenting for their sins in processions that can last hours. Masks hide sinners' identities, and pointed hoods are meant to reach them closer to heaven. The Spanish tradition has been practiced since the 1400s. The similar looking garb worn by KKK members is entirely unrelated, though Klansmen could have looked at the Spanish penitents for inspiration. The burning cross is another symbol widely associated with the Ku Klux Klan, though it only entered into Klan tradition in 1915. Four hundred years before that, Scottish clansmen -- that's clan with a c -- used "fiery crosses" as calls to arms. Messengers would carry a small charred or burning cross from town to town to unite the clans for war. Fiery crosses were famously used in Scotland ahead of the Jacobite Rising in 1745, and even in Canada during the War of 1812. Thomas Dixon illustrated the fiery cross in his novel The Clansmen, and the practice was then exaggerated in the film Birth of a Nation.

The Cross Symbol I. Background of the Cross In yet another indication in just how widespread “the conspiracy” is we have the letter ‘X’. In the Roman numeral system it represents 10 and in the previous Cathedrals link I discussed that multiples of the ‘perfect number’ 10 (i.e., 120 and 180) have basically the same meaning as their respective ‘base’ (12 and 18). More importantly, ‘X’ represents the cross and the most notable cross of human history is the cross on which Jesus Christ, the real One, was crucified. In other links here (for example archetypes) I discuss how God, the real One, specifically denounces any false idol worship. Included in this group of idols would be the “Christian” cross. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church and its offshoots including Eastern Orthodoxy, Episcopalians, Coptics and even the so called Protestants didn’t get that memo -which is basically spelled out in the first three Commandments. One can easily see this as crosses inhabit just about every Cathedral and church worldwide. And of course the Knights Templar and its sister organizations like the Freemasons, Rosicrucians and Illuminati didn’t get the memo either as most of their symbols and worship involve various derivations of the cross. Speaking of the Freemasons/Rosicrucians let’s revisit the “Rosicrucian Enlightenment” as it applies to the cross: The Chymical Wedding is a rosary...At the center of the Rose is the hierogamy (sacred marriage) of Christian Rosenkreutz and the Lady Venus, for although the text is assumed to be about the symbolic marriage of the king and queen, in fact the title is descriptive of the spiritual coming together of Christian Rosenkreutz and the Lady Venus.
