Coaches look forward to "great show" in Florence

Florence, Italy, July 15, 2014 – The six coaches of the teams preparing to clash in the 2014 World League have spoken of their individual challenges ahead of the action, which begins on Wednesday afternoon at the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence.

 The six participants at the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1 Finals in Florence, Italy come from

five different continents: South America (Brazil), Asia (Iran), Europe (Italy and Russia) and North America (USA).

 Two groups of three (Russia, Brazil, Iran in Group E, USA, Australia and hosts Italy in Group H) will

play each other, with the bottom side in each group eliminated. The four remaining teams will contest the semi finals (first place in group E playing second place in group H and vice versa), with the bronze

medal match and final taking place on Sunday.

 Russia, who face Iran in the first match, are the title holders, and will be looking for their fourth victory. Brazil have won the most titles, with nine.

 USA take on Italy in the second game at 20.30.

“Firstly I’d like to welcome everyone to Italy, as hosts, and welcome my fellow coaches,” said Italy coach Mauro Berruto. “I think it will be a great show and it’s a great thing that we’ve got many different continents being represented. We are happy that the World League is in Italy after ten years.”

“For us this is something new,” said Australia coach John Uriate. “It was a really tough process getting here and a real learning curve. Now we need to learn, and learn quickly, what the World League Finals is like. But it is exciting times for us.”

“It’s going to be tough playing against the hosts, but we’re really excited about being here,” said John Speraw, coach of USA. “All the teams had really difficult matches and for the pool to come down to the

final match showed that. But I think we played very well in that final match and I think the US team is in a good place at the moment.”

“It is fantastic for Iran to be here and playing against these teams,” said Slobodan Kovac, coach of Iran. “But we came through a very tough group and we hope we can do the same here and put in a challenge.”

“They are all great teams and we hope that we have prepared very well, and can do better than we did in the qualifying group,” added Brazil’s coach Bernardo Rezende.

“We are in good form and hope to retain our title, we’re working hard and feel like we have a strong side,” added Andrey Voronkov, coach of Russia.
