Mann, Ph.D. Director: Michael Witczak, SLD “Ritual catechesis” is a popular topic among today’s liturgists and catechetical leaders, but this dyad has long been a topic in the Church. The Fathers of the Church knew ritual catechesis and treated it in their preaching. This dissertation explores the scrutiny rite as an important part of the catechumenate process. Scrutinies flourished in the fifth century, faded into disuse in the Middle Ages, and have been restored to regular Lenten Sunday practice since the Second Vatican Council. Our study is methodological: how does the ritual of the scrutinies, as catechesis, form and transform? The study begins with the relationship among liturgy, ritual, and catechesis. Catherine Bell serves as a guide to Ritual Studies. Then, turning to the history of Christian initiation, I explore evidence about the scrutinies from Roman and Frankish liturgical sources, following Antoine Chavasse’s insights. After the collapse of the scrutiny into a single celebration (eighth century), the medieval ritual re-expanded in a process of restoration before and after the Second Vatican Council. The 1988 pastoral adaptation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for the United States is a key source for my final reflections. The last chapter integrates the liturgical and theological study of the previous chapters, to reveal the scrutiny as a source of catechesis. The scrutiny emerges as a transformative ritual. It catechizes through gestures and words. The early medieval scrutiny was dramatic, taking place while the elect stood fasting and naked as Satan was adjured to be gone. The present rite, less dramatic, still evokes transformation by its symbols and words. The scrutinies catechize the elect in an active way about Satan, evil, and the victorious power of grace. This catechesis is a formation that combines intellect and emotion, liturgy and teaching, word and act, to touch the hearts and minds of the elect. It affects and effects who they are as members of the Church. The scrutiny forms and transforms a new member of God’s People, a new part of Christ’s body, a new building block in the temple of the Spirit. This dissertation by Patricia M. Sincere gratitude goes to my brother, Robert Novak, who edited this dissertation and inspires me by his example. vii INTRODUCTION “Christians are made not born.” That is the conviction of the prolific early Christian author, Tertullian (ca. 160-220 C.E.).1 Throughout history, people have been made Christian through Baptism. In Tertullian’s day and again in our own, part of the celebration of Baptism includes the period of the catechumenate. This period provides a process that had originated by the third century, flourished in the fifth, became a ritual vestige in the Middle Ages, and has been restored to vigorous church practice since the Second Vatican Council. The period of the catechumenate contains a number of rituals of the church. Among these rituals is one that will form the focus of this study: the scrutinies. The history, celebration, and theology of the scrutinies will form an important part of what follows. The main question to emerge, though, is methodological: how is the ritual of the scrutiny also catechesis? The period of the catechumenate is one of four periods in the newly renewed Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in the Roman Catholic Church. Each period has one or several ritual components that are essential parts of the process that leads an adult to full membership in the church. “Ritual” can be a vague term. It is both a technical term in the liturgy and a generic term in human behavior. Technically, in the liturgy, it means a specific book or action of the church. One speaks of the “ritual of Baptism” or the “ritual of Ordination.” However, ritual also refers more generically to patterns of human activity that consist of prayers, words, and gestures through which meaning is communicated. 1 Tertullian, Apology 18.4. Glover (Cambridge, MA.: Loeb Classical Library, 1953). 1 2 The purpose of this dissertation is to study the specific ritual of the period of the catechumenate called the scrutiny. I will explore how ritual, and specifically the scrutiny ritual, is a means of catechesis, the process by which someone enters more deeply into the faith of the church. As we will see, catechesis is a complex form that includes intellectual, liturgical, pastoral, communal, and other dimensions to achieve its goal of allowing someone to “echo” the faith. (“Catechesis” comes from a Greek word that means “to echo.”) The focus will be on how ritual both forms and transforms, two goals of catechesis.

David VOPŘADA* QUODVULTDEUS’ SERMONS ON THE CREED: A REASSESSMENT OF HIS POLEMICS AGAINST THE JEWS, PAGANS, AND ARIANS** The turn of the 4th and 5th century is very often portrayed as an era of sig- nificant advancement for orthodox Christianity (where orthodoxy refers to the right doctrine rather than to our times’ Orthodox Churches). The legislation of Theodosius set the Christianity confessed by Peter as the privileged belief of the Roman people and its Emperors1.The life of Jews started to be regulated in relation to Christians. The efforts of the pagan nobility in Rome under the lea- dership of Symmachus and Praetextatus in the 380s were brought to an end by Theodosius’ victory at the river Frigidus in 3962. Indeed, Arianism seemed to have been defeated at the councils of Constantinople and Aquileia in 381. Still, it is quite clear that Arianism and other heretical doctrines survived through the 5th century, as the many polemical writings of Augustine bear witness to3. A group of pseudo-Augustinian sermons attributed to the Bishop of Carthage, Quodvultdeus, and composed towards the end of the 430s attests to the con- tinuing polemics against Jews, pagans, and especially Arians4. Quodvultdeus is an excellent witness to the first generation of post-Augustinian theologians and pastors.     ABSTRACT The Donatist Church in an Apocalyptic Age Jesse A. Hoover, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. As a dissident Christian tradition that still endured sporadic Imperial persecution, the Donatist church occupied a unique niche within the wider apocalyptic milieu of late antiquity. This was an era characterized by intense eschatological speculation, spurred on by the recent political ascendency of Christianity within the Empire, the rise of rival theological communions in its wake, and mounting anxiety over the increasing tenuousness of Roman rule in the western provinces. Despite its often-overstated estrangement from the transmarine Christian communities of late antiquity, Donatism was no stranger to this phenomenon. In this dissertation, I wish to contextualize extant Donatist interaction with apocalyptic exegesis in order to see where it remained in continuity with the wider western apocalyptic tradition and where it diverged. This is a topic which will require some nuance. The dominant tendency within early and mid-twentieth century academic discussions of Donatist apocalypticism – when it is mentioned at all – have been to portray it as evidence of an anachronistic inclination within Donatist theology or as a symptom of simmering national or economic dissatisfaction, a religious warrant for social unrest. Reacting to such interpretations, more recent discussions of Donatism which emphasize its theological viability have tended to avoid the topic altogether. In this project, in contrast, I portray Donatist apocalyptic exegesis as an essentially dynamic, adaptive theological phenomenon. As befits an ecclesiastical communion which once formed the majority church in North Africa, Donatist interaction with apocalypticism was neither monolithic nor static.

This is especially true for St. Quodvultdeus, the Bishop of Carthage in North Africa who went to his heavenly reward in the year 439 AD. “Quodvultdeus” means “Whatever God Wants” in Latin. St. Quodvultdeus lived in a very difficult time for the Church in North Africa. The Vandal tribe—from which the word “vandal” and “vandalism” come—invaded Africa from Spain. The Vandals held to the heresy of Arianism, which taught that Jesus Christ was a lesser God than God the Fa- ther, and that he was created by the Father at a certain point. The Vandals persecuted Catholic Christians fiercely and killed many of them. St. Quodvultdeus tried to help the priests and lay people in his diocese to have courage and to persevere in the true faith in spite of the attacks on them. Eventually, St. Quodvultdeus and most of his clergy were put on ships with no oars or sails, and sent out to sea. The Vandals probably thought this would result in their death, but God made sure the ships ended up in Naples in Italy, where they were safe among fellow Catholics. What does St. Quodvultdeus have to do with Lent? Well, his name reveals the attitude all Christians should seek to have more and more—“whatever God wants.” The traditional practices of Lent—prayer, fasting and almsgiving (giving to the needy)—help develop this attitude within us.

    CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Mater ecclesia has been one of the more prevalent and unique expressions for conveying the nature and function of the church in Christian thought. Unlike other ecclesial metaphors, such as the Body of Christ or People of God, mater ecclesia lacks a direct scriptural antecedent. Although various maternal images exist in Scripture, none are explicitly associated with the Christian community itself.1 Moreover, the metaphor of mater ecclesia appeared suddenly in late second-century patristic literature and without explanation. Yet, once the image was introduced, patristic writers continuously employed mater ecclesia as an image characterizing the corporate identity of the church. Epitomized in Cyprian‘s oft-repeated dictum, ―One cannot have God for a Father who does not have the church for a mother,‖ patristic writers understood the church‘s maternity as a natural extension of God‘s paternity, and an individual‘s association with her as an absolute requirement for salvation.2 The popularity of this image grew to such an extent, especially in the ancient western church, that the figure of mater ecclesia became the subject of not only ecclesiologically-focused treatises but Christian poetry, mosaics, and architecture as well. 1 Paul S.     VANDALIA: IDENTITY, POLICY, AND NATION-BUILDING IN LATE-ANTIQUE NORTH AFRICA BY EUGENE JOHAN JANSSEN PARKER A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Victoria University of Wellington 2018 Abstract In 534, after the conquest of the Vandal kingdom, Procopius tells us that the emperor Justinian deported all remaining Vandals to serve on the Persian frontier. But a hundred years of Vandal rule bred cultural ambiguities in Africa, and the changes in identity that occurred during the Vandal century persisted long after the Vandals had been shipped off to the East: Byzantine and Arabic writers alike shared the conviction that the Africans had, by the sixth and seventh centuries, become something other than Roman. This thesis surveys the available evidence for cultural transformation and merger of identities between the two principal peoples of Vandal Africa, the Vandals and the Romano-Africans, to determine the origins of those changes in identity, and how the people of Africa came to be different enough from Romans for ancient writers to pass such comment. It examines the visible conversation around ethnicity in late-antique Africa to determine what the defining social signifiers of Vandal and Romano-African identity were during the Vandal century, and how they changed over time. Likewise, it explores the evidence for deliberate attempts by the Vandal state to foster national unity and identity among their subjects, and in particular the role that religion and the African Arian Church played in furthering these strategies for national unity. Finally, it traces into the Byzantine period the after-effects of changes that occurred in Africa during the Vandal period, discussing how shifts in what it meant to be Roman or Vandal in Africa under Vandal rule shaped the province's history and character after its incorporation into the Eastern Empire.

    Sold to Sin Through Origo: Augustine of Hippo and the late Roman Slave Trade Susanna ELM, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, USA ABSTRACT Toward the end of his life, Augustine of Hippo wrote two letters (10* abs 24*) to legal experts in which he reacted to recent attempts by slave-traders to sell 125 Roman North Africans ‘overseas’ as slaves. Prompted by the fact that members of his clergy had offered them refuge in the episcopal compound at Hippo, Augustine sought to clarify the actual personal legal status of these men, women and children. Were they slaves, coloni, or illegally captured free Roman citizens? What were their actual temporal, legal, personal conditions? Such concerns surrounding the condicio hominum tempo­ ralis, brought to light as a result of selling human beings, and their relevance and ramifications for Augustine’s thoughts and actions, especially with regard to the sin to which we are sold per originem of the First Man, are the focus of my remarks. On June 3, 1870, the steamship Mars of the Austrian Lloyd, operating out of Trieste, docked at Smyrna (today’s Izmir) en route from Alexandria to Constantinople. Though Smyrna was a regularly scheduled halt, that day proved to be anything but routine: the British consul insisted on searching the Mars for slaves. The Mars’ captain strenuously objected to such a search.1 Though not a lawyer, he confidently quoted the Austrian penal code of 1852 to assure the British consul ‘that there can be no slaves on an Austrian ship’, because whoever set foot on Austrian

Abstract This thesis examines temple conversion in the cities of Alexandria, Cyrene and Carthage during the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. with particular reference to how the processes of temple conversion effect the cultural, ritual and topographical memory of the cities inhabitants. How an individual interacts with their city is based on layers of memory laid down in a mind-map, a community is built when there are elements of shared memory focussed around certain common landmarks. Dramatic changes to the landscape, such as temple conversion, can alter how a population views the city and their place within it.
