This acknowledgement is my way of saying "Thank you" to them, and affirming that I only reached this day because of their love and support. First, I would like to thank my husband of thirty two years, Steven, for sharing my life vision and understanding why I felt the need to reach this degree. I appreciate his daily encouragement of my efforts and his endless patience of the time I had to devote to this work. His love and companionship gave me strength and motivation to accomplish this goal. My children, Melanie and Brian, and grandchildren, Amelia, Steven II, Christina, and Dawson, all had to sacrifice my more constant presence in their lives as I have had to labor long and hard when I could have been sharing laughter and precious life with them. They mean everything to me and I plan on seeing them all much more frequently now that grandma can focus on them and not a computer screen. My daughter-in-law, Dorothy, and mother-in-law, Rosemary, also understood the importance of this project to me and offered their support. There is also my friend, Isabelle, who read and reread my paper. She was my biggest fan and I thank her for always being there for me. It was an investigation of five African American male leaders from Jacksonville, Florida, and their individual and collective perceptions on what enabled them to educationally succeed despite their humble beginnings. The study explored the similarities, differences, and historical experiences of all five of the African American male leaders purposefully chosen for this research. Two categories or types of themes were identified in this study, common background themes and common outcome themes. Six themes were common background themes and functioned as major influencers and motivators which are discussed at length in the findings. They included: family, neighborhoods, public school, spirituality, racial experiences, and heroes and mentors. The two common outcome themes, career and leadership, X resulted from the influences of the other six common background themes. Three patterns emerged:
