Dean of the Graduate- College 934940 ii PREFACE This study includes a list of the vascular plants and other information on the geology, soils, and climate of the Gypsum Hills and Redbed Plains. region in southwestern Oklahoma which includes Harmon, Jackson, and Greer counties. The list is by necessity not complete. Only one collecting season is covered in the study, and many years of work would be necessary to obtain a near complete list. I would like to express appreciation to the members of my committee, Dr. J. K McPherson and Dr. J. R. Estes for their advisement and assistance during the course of study. Name: Amaryllis – Hardy Scientific name: Hippeastrum johnsoni Common Names: Cluster Amaryllis, Hurricane Lily, Magic Lily, Spider Lily, Stone Garlic. Life Cycle: Hardy bulb. Height: 12 to 36 inches (30 to 90 cm). Native: Asia. Growing Region: Zones 7 to 10. Flowers: Late summer through to autumn. Flower Details: White, red, pink, orange, yellow. Lily- like. Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. Hazlett is an ethnobotanist, Director of New World Plants and People consulting, and a research associate at the Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver, CO. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. Plant Identification - Is It Important?
August 26, 2004 Welcome, This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the James E. "Bud" Smith Plant Materials Center here at Knox City, Texas. This Plant Materials Center (PMC) and the other 25 PMCs around the nation originated from a system of nurseries set up in 1933 to produce the much- needed plants and seeds for healing the scars of erosion caused by years and years of up-and-down hill farming, droughts, and floods. Today the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service manages the Plant Materials Program to produce plants and seeds for many purposes such as wildlife habitat, recreation, forages, aesthetics, water quality, as well as erosion control. You will learn more about the PMC and the Program during today's field day. I encourage you to take a tour of the evaluations and production fields, view the displays in the barns, and attend one or both of the workshops. We are happy to have your here today. BELL COUNTY MASTER GARDENER Tip of the Week By Beverly Wickersham “Getting to Know Our Roadside Wildflowers” First in a Series The following wildflowers are among our earliest spring bloomers. Look for them as you drive on city streets or state highways and take pleasure in being able to call them by one of their common names and/or by the species name. PRAIRIE VERBENA, DAKOTA VERVAIN, SWEET WILLIAM Verbena bipinnatifida (Verbenaceae) Vervain Family Prairie Verbena is one of our earliest spring bloomers. This low, trailing, or creeping perennial forms mat-like colonies covering large areas. The lower creeping branches take root wherever a joint touches the ground. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract many species of butterflies. PINK EVENING PRIMROSE, SHOWY PRIMROSE, BUTTERCUP Oenothera speciosa (Onagraceae) Primrose or Buttercup Family One of our showiest and most abundant wildflowers, this sprawling plant grows from 6 to 24 inches tall, has a few erect stems but more often displays long, reclining stems. The flower color varies from white to rose-pink. This perennial plant forms extensive colonies and provides vivid displays. The flowers may open in the morning or evening depending on populations. ENGELMANN’S DAISY, CUT-LEAFED DAISY Engelmannia pinnatifida (Asteraceae) Sunflower Family This plant common to our lawns, fields and roadsides resembles the sunflower, but has the daisy characteristic of closing the flower heads at night and opening them in bright sunlight. A member of the Sunflower Tribe of the Daisy Family, this plant is related to many well-known garden plants: Zinnia, Cosmos, and Dahlia. Allowing the plant to bloom and go to seed in you lawn and garden will assure many more of these showy plants the following spring. -

Species for Plant Collections Engelmannia peristenia Scientific Name: Engelmannia peristenia (Raf.) Goodman & C.A. Lawson, was previously known as Engelmannia pinnatifida Common Name: Engelmann’s Daisy or cutleaf daisy Morphological Characteristics: Habit- native perennial forb reaching 75 cm. tall; reproduces by seed Leaves- pinnately divided leaves 4-20 cm. long Flowers- loosely clustered yellow heads from February to November. Both ray and dick flowers are yellow. Fruit- achenes Other- Cattle readily eat Engelmann’s daisy, and it has been grazed from much of its original range. White- tailed deer also eat the leaves and several species of birds eat the seeds. Habitat and Range: Frequently occurs on the better-drained sands or caliche in prairies, openings, and waste places. It is most common in north central Texas and the Edwards Plateau, but occurs throughout the state, except in the forested sandy areas of East Texas. Its range extends into Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Mexico. Conservation Use: Why collect this plant? Texas Plant Materials Centers have identified this plant as having potential benefits to the following conservation practice standards: 645 Upland Wildlife Habitat Management, 550 Range Planting, and 562 Recreation Area Improvement. The observatioDS and collections on which the following report is based were made at the several posts where I have been stationed since August, 1880, also, and chiefly, while on duty with the expeditions for the exploration of Western Texas, under the command of Maj. William K. Livermore, chief engineer officer, Department of Texas, in the sum- mer and fall of 1881 and 1883. The specimens themselves will be pre- sented to the National Museum. The first part describes in a general way the vegetation of Western and Southern Texas. The various topographical features of the land are considered separately and their botanical physiognomy sketched as accurately as possible. It includes such meteorological notes as were deemed useful for the better understanding of the subject. The seconfi part is made up of economic notes on the plants known to have useful or baneful i^roperties or to be of value to agriculture or in- dustry. My grateful acknowledgments are particularly due to Mr. Sereno Watson, of Cambridge, and Dr. George Vasey, of the Department of Agriculture, for their valuable assistance in the determination of spe- cies. PAKT I. GENEEAL VIEW. Austin, the capital of Texas, lies within the timbered agricultural section of the State. South and west of it, the mean annual temperature increases while the rainfall decreases so that a change of vegetation soon becomes perceptible.
