PILOT FOR INDEPENDENT RESIDENTIAL KENNEL INSPECTIONS LAUNCHED Following its announcement earlier in the year that all residential kennels will be externally audited, GBGB has launched a pilot of the new independent inspections. The pilot was originally due to take place in the Spring but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new inspections are being undertaken by independent auditors, NSF International, who have extensive experience of conducting animal welfare audits. Over the coming months, NSF will be carrying out a pilot with a select number of trainers in conjunction with their area Stipendiary Steward. Trainers chosen for this pilot have already been contacted by GBGB via letter. The pilot scheme will last for several weeks and a full roll-out of the inspections will begin in January 2021. The inspections will be based on the criteria detailed in the PAS 251: 2017 Specification for Greyhound Trainers’ Residential Kennels’ which is available on the GBGB website and via the trainers’ portal. The pilot scheme aims to familiarise NSF with the workings of licenced kennels and to ensure trainers have a good understanding of what is required of them for these inspections. Paul Illingworth, Senior Stipendiary Steward, said: “With the events of the past few months we had to take the decision to postpone the start of our work with NSF but we are pleased to get this important work underway. These inspections will demonstrate our commitment to upholding the highest welfare standards across our sport. We are hugely thankful for trainers and their staff for their support as we introduce these changes. “It is our hope that the pilot scheme will give both trainers and NSF the opportunity to fully familiarise themselves with the process and ensure we have everything in place to roll the new inspections out fully from next year. If any trainer has any questions about the new inspections or the PAS, please contact your Stipendiary Steward.” GBGB INJURY RECOVERY SCHEME This is a notice to remind all trainers and owners that GBGB has an injury recovery scheme (IRS) in place to provide financial assistance to all owners and trainers whose greyhound has sustained a career ending injury at a GBGB licensed racecourse. Funding will be provided towards corrective orthopaedic veterinary treatment so, wherever possible, greyhounds can go onto enjoy a full and active life in retirement. A grant of 50% towards the veterinary costs, up to a maximum of £400 per greyhound, will be payable to the applicant upon completion of an IRS application form and the production of a fully paid veterinary invoice. To apply for IRS funding, please contact the GBGB Welfare Department on 020 7822 0900 (option 1) or speak to your stadium welfare officer. CALENDAR 1 MANSIONBET IS LATEST BOOKMAKER TO CONTRIBUTE TO BRITISH GREYHOUND RACING FUND The British Greyhound Racing Fund (BGRF) is pleased to announce that MansionBet is the latest bookmaker to become a contributor to the Fund. Their decision has been welcomed by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) and also by the BGRF Chairman Joe Scanlon, following positive and productive discussions with MansionBet about how they can work more closely with the sport. In paying into the Fund, which is sustained through voluntary contributions from bookmakers, MansionBet will now be supporting GBGB to deliver essential welfare and integrity initiatives through the Greyhound Commitment. Most recently, this has included the launch of GBGB’s Greyhound Retirement Scheme, which aims to ensure every racing greyhound enjoys a long and happy retirement by removing the financial barriers to their rehoming. Ross Harkins, Head of Sportsbook at MansionBet, said: “Over the past year we have invested a lot of resource into drastically improving our greyhound offering. Becoming a contributor to the British Greyhound Racing Fund was a natural step forward for us as a sportsbook and I’m delighted that we are contributing to the welfare and integrity initiatives to ensure the best possible care for greyhounds.” Joe Scanlon, Chairman of the Fund, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome MansionBet to our list of major online contributors. In these difficult times it’s more vital than ever that all bookmakers who benefit from the sport accept their responsibility, thereby ensuring we are able to provide the highest level of welfare provision for the racing greyhound throughout their life.” Mark Moisley, GBGB Commercial Director, added: “MansionBet is a well-known name in sport and we are delighted that they will now be contributing to greyhound racing. They are keen to develop a partnership with GBGB and provide sponsorship, in addition to the levy fund, and we look forward to working closely alongside them.” ANNUAL VETERINARY KENNEL INSPECTIONS A reminder that all Professional and Greyhound trainers that still have not had their 2020 Veterinary Kennel Inspection completed should arrange one with their Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible. If you are having difficulty in finding a vet, please contact your Area Stipendiary Steward who may be able to advise you. 2 VOL 12 NO 13 25 SEPTEMBER 2020 IMPORTANT NOTICES Complaints The Greyhound Board of Great Britain will receive complaints in confidence from anyone concerned about a possible breach of the Rules of Racing.
