dmiston Parish Newsletter Page Idmiston Parish Memorial Hall - New Plans

In an attempt to make the Hall more available to different groups who may wish shorter time slots, we would like to trial the introduction of a “lunchtime” session to run between 12 and 2pm at a cost of £20. It is hoped that with suitable marketing and possible “word of mouth” we can encourage some new regular clubs to use the hall at this time. We understand that there may be groups at Porton Down in particular who could make use of this facility during the working day, so please get in touch if you would like to discuss this further, or please feel free to pass on my contact details (below). Salisbury and District Model Engineering Society

The Society are pleased to have been able to add to the facilities at Idmiston Parish Memorial Hall and have recently provided a large retractable projector screen which will be permanently installed in the Hall for all to use. We hope all groups will find this useful as visiting speakers will no longer need to bring their own.

We are in the process of drawing up our programme for 2018 and are currently re-vamping our website.

The Society meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at the dmiston Parish emorial Hall. We have some interesting meetings planned and visitors are always welcome on club nights.

dmiston Parish Newsletter Page Open Gardens

We are planning an “Open Gardens” day within the parish to raise funds for the Memorial Hall on SUNDAY 10th JUNE 2018.

ollowing our request in the last edition we are very pleased to have had a good response from people willing to participate; we have a cluster of gardens in Porton illage and or in omeldon and Idmiston We would love to be a able to have more gardens so this is a call to ask for more of you to think of joining in. I’m sure there are some delightful gardens, vegetable patches and rockeries in Porton oreeld in omeldon and in Idmiston

The plan is to have a number of gardens in each location for viewing on the day with afternoon tea refreshments and possibly a plant sale in the Memorial Hall. It would be great to have a broad cross section of styles, from herbaceous borders to patio pots, bountiful kitchen gardens to wild ower planting any sie or any style.

If you would be interested in opening your garden to the public, dispensing some of your green fingered tips and advice or just lending a helping hand in the running of the day, then PLEASE get in touch with either: Katherine Wilford ([email protected]) or Phyl Grant (01980 610263/ [email protected])

Mulepackers Country & Western Dance Club

Mulepackers CWDC recently held their big Summer Dance with artist, Ben Thompson. There were 97 of us line dancing and western partner dancing to live music. It was a fantastic evening and we were able to make a good donation from our raffle to the Stars Appeal, Amesbury Ward fund. We are now looking forward to our Autumn Charity dance. In addition to our club nights, we organise social dances regularly so that everyone gets to mix together and practise what we have been learning.

Have you ever thought you would like to dance, but are not sure if you would be able to learn, or you’ve given dancing a go but found it too formal? We are used to having people tell us that they have “two left feet” or that they’re slow to learn, but our emphasis is on having fun, and before you know it, you’ve got the bug. What we do now is give new people some private sessions (for a voluntary donation to our charity) teaching some basic steps and easy dances rst. hat makes it easier to come along to the classes without feeling “dropped in at the deep end”. In fact, recently we have had several people doing our partner dancing in this way and they’ve now joined us on a Monday evening at the hall at 8.30 pm. ie us a ring if youd like to gie it a go.

Our line dancing is 7 to 8.30 on Monday evenings at the hall. Our partner dancing is 8.30 to 10.00 on Monday evenings at the hall.

It was hard work and many found the change from previous campsites, (with showers and toilets), rather a struggle. Their plight was not helped by the weather, which was far from kind. A week can be a long time at camp though and by the end the scouts were getting into the swing of things - perhaps we need to camp for 2 weeks! The programme for the week included shooting, archery, a high ropes course, hiking cooking on open res and een a trip on Swanage ailway. he high ropes activity was particularly impressive, not least because the rain was coming down in buckets at the time and the scouts carried on oblivious. In July, Ann Howell, a member of our group and a history enthusiast, gave a detailed talk on ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ which took place as part of the rimean War during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854.

In September we did some physical exercise in the form of Chair Yoga, led by Anthea Aireton. We bent and stretched our bodies from ngertips to toes for almost an hour and were told that if we did this every day our posture and breathing would benet enormously but will we?

Our future programme has been re-arranged as follows:

n In October we have a talk on Stonehenge, which I look forward to reporting on later.

In November we have two dates planned.

n On 22 November Wiltshire Farm Foods will provide a talk and tasting afternoon.

n On 29 November we will conclude an enjoyable year’s programme with our Christmas Lunch at The Crown, Cholderton.

We still have room for a few more members and could provide transport if needed.

POW WOW A chatty time when Brownies and Leaders shared stories about what each of us had been up to during the summer. Lots of us visited family and friends or to went stay with them. A few Brownies travelled abroad, others explored different parts of the UK. Many brought an item or a picture to show.

COMPETITON TIME Thinking caps went on at the beginning of September as we each came up with an idea for a hristmas card with some link to Brownie Adventures. ough drafts in pencil then colour added before embarking on the real thing. Two weeks later all designs were complete, some with felt tip here and there, others done in coloured pencil and een some budding onstables took to their paintbrushes. There were Brownie Elves, Santa at sleepovers, pretty bows on presents refoil decorated hristmas puddings, of course lots of snowballs and snowakes too. All were entered into the irlguiding Wiltshire South hristmas ard ompetition and we eagerly await the outcome of the judging.

SALISBURY REMEMBERS It was great to be able to take part in this fantastic community project. Each Brownie made at least one plastic bottle poppy and in the process learnt how to safely strike a match and light a candle. Hopefully some of us will be able to attend the launch event too.

POTATO FACES A spot of DIY on a potato sounds a bit strange doesn’t it? However it is a great way to learn how to safely use a hammer, a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Snowy Owl was glad of her DIY experience when it came to describing dierent tool types and their uses including claw versus lump, crosshead vs posidrive and bull- nose versus long nose. Brownie artistic talent was in full swing again as faces or initials emerged using nails and screws of dierent sies and shapes.

COOKIE MONSTER Buard is a dab hand at making delicious cookies however as the picture shows these were not of the blue monster variety and they bite back!

We have spaces for girls aged 7-10 year old who want to have fun and make new friends. If you would like to know more then get in touch with Snowy Owl on 01980 862 662.
