Abstract: Vernacular architecture can be defined as that architecture characterized based on the function, construction materials and traditional knowledge specific and unique to its location. It is indigenous to a specific time and place and also incorporates the skills and expertise of local builders. The paper is elaborated on the basis of case studies of settlements in the Coastal region of Karnataka with special reference to Barkur and Brahmavar of Udupi regions. It has evolved over generations with the available building materials, climatic conditions and local craftsmanship. However, some examples of vernacular architecture are still found in Barkur and Brahmavar. These vernacular residential dwellings provided with various passive solar techniques including natural cooling systems and are more comfortable compared to the contemporary buildings in today's context. This research paper into various parameters which defines the vernacular architecture of coastal Karnataka and how these parameters can be interpreted in today’s context so that it can be used effectively in the future residential designs. keywords - sustainable, vernacular architecture, modern building, sustainability.     DOES MEDIEVAL POLITICAL SYSTEM OF TULUNADU REPRESENTS LOWER FEUDALISM…? Dr. SURESH RAI K. Associate Professor of History Historically, Tulunadu, is the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka and Kasaragod district in Kerala State. The nomenclature ‘Dakshina Kannada’ is used here to refer to the present Dakshina Kannada district together with Udupi district separated in 1998, which were jointly referred to as ‘South Canara’ earlier. ‘South Canara’ was an extensively used term during colonial time, and it has been retained in special circumstances and while mentioning colonial records. The name ‘Kanara’, which was formerly spelt as ‘Canara’ is derived from Kannada, the name of the regional language of the State. It appears that the Portuguese, who, on arrival in this part of India, found the common linguistic medium of the people to be Kannada, and accordingly called the area ‘Canara’; ‘d’ being not much in use in Portuguese. This name applied to the whole coastal belt of Karnataka and was continued to be used as such by the British. It is therefore necessary to deploy Tulunadu to refer to the ‘cultural zone’ that included Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod districts. The present districts of Karnataka like North Canara, South Canara, Udupi and Kasaragod of Kerala were known as the Canara and Soonda Province, which was under the Madras Presidency. In 1799 AD, after the fall of Tippu Sultan, Tulunadu was brought under the new Canara province. The northern region of Canara province was called North Canara. The same names continued as North and South Kanara after the unification of Karnataka State.

It has a rich historical background and this cultural landscape which has evolved over centuries is under threat due to insensitive development and apathy towards their heritage. This paper involves a landscape approach through historical analysis of the primary data and survey method using secondary data to map the topography of this town. Design strategies are proposed for a sustainable rejuvenation of the heritage and cultural landscape to achieve ecological stability, conservation of the monuments and to promote eco-tourism and showcase the glory and growth of this town. It is found that proper watershed management would help to optimize the use of natural resources, improve agriculture productivity and revive the lost interlinks between the streams and tanks. Policies are proposed to protect and conserve rich farmlands and provide for a sustainable development of the historic sites and monuments. The proposals include a sustainable development to promote eco-tourism and provide economic opportunities to the local community.     JNROnline Journal Journal of Natural Remedies ISSN: 2320-3358 (e) Vol. 21, No. 3, (2020), pp.96-99 ISSN: 0972-5547 (p) KUNJALI MARAKKARS Dr. Anand Lali Seena Asst.Professor of History Sree Ayyappa College for Women Chunkankadai ABSTRACT The Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief of the Zamorin of Calicut (Kozhikode Samoothiri) in present-day Kerala, during the 16th century. There were four Kunjali Marakkars ,who were the naval commanders of Zamorin in his naval war against the Portuguese from 1507 to 1600. The Kunjali Marakkars are credited with organizing the first naval defense of the Indian coast. The title of Marakkar was given by the Zamorin. It may have been derived from the Malayalam language word marakkalam meaning ‘boat,’ and kar, a termination, showing possession.The four Kunjali Marakkars are :Kutti Ahmed Ali – Kunjali Marakkar I (1520 – 1531)Kutti Pokker Ali – Kunjali Marakkar II (1531 – 1571)Pattu Marakkar – Kunjali Marakkar III (1571 – 1595)Mohammed Ali – Kunjali Marakkar IV (1595 – 1600). Marakkars were originally Muslim marine merchants of port Kochi who left for Ponnani in the Zamorin's dominion when the Portuguese fleets came to Kingdom of Cochin. They offered their men, ships and wealth against the Portuguese to the Zamorin of Calicut-the king took them into his service and eventually they became the Admirals of his fleet.The end of Kunjali Marakkars is one of the tragic episodes in Kerala history and it is all the more so in view of the ignoble treachery of the Zamorin who was once his lord and master.
