Zak has been studying Nusach and Tefilah for many years and tries to incorporate modern and contemporary music in to his davening whilst still keeping the authenticity of the Tefilah. Together with his sweet lyrical tenor voice, Zak makes Tefilah enjoyable and meaningful to listen to. Zak led his first Yamim Noraim service at the age of 14 and has led the High Holy Day services at the Chief Rabbi’s synagogue in London for the past few years. Zak has served as the Shliach Tzibur/Cantor at many prestigious synagogues throughout London and the rest of the UK, such as Magen Avot Synagogue, Ner Yisrael Synagogue, Wembley Synagogue, Bournemouth Synagogue, and Finchley ‘Kinloss’ Synagogue, to name a few. Torah Insights “When you enter the land of Canaan that I give you as a possession, and I inflict an eruptive plague upon a house in the land you possess (Metzora 14:34).” Commenting on why the affliction of tzara’at (a spiritual disease with similarities to leprosy) also befalls inanimate objects such as one’s home, the chassidic master, Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin, refers to a gemorah in Arachin (16a) which states that one of the spiritual sins which cause the affliction of tzara’at is the sin of arrogance. Considering that the person’s luxurious possessions may have spurred these feelings of arrogance and superiority over others, the afflicted home and personal possessions were also infected as a way of humbling the person and thus hastening the recovery. For the most part, it ignores the doctrines, faith, and practices of Orthodox Jews, and barely touches upon synagogue hie, which is the most meaningful expression of American Orthodoxy. It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Earlier predictions of the demise of 11 am indebted to many people who assisted me in making this essay possible. More than 40, active in a variety of Orthodox organizations, gave freely of their time for extended discussions and interviews and many lay leaders and rabbis throughout the United States responded to a mail questionnaire. A number of people read a draft of this paper. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few by name, at the same time exonerating them of any responsibility for errors of fact or for my own judgments and interpretations. The section on modern Orthodoxy was read by Rabbi Emanuel Rackman. The sections beginning with the sectarian Orthodox to the conclusion of the paper were read by Rabbi Nathan Bulman. Criticism and comments on the entire paper were forthcoming from Rabbi Aaron Lichtenstein, Dr. Marshall Ski are, and Victor Geller, without whose assistance the section on the number of Orthodox Jews could not have been written.

In that position it strives, sometimes with difficulty, to apply a flexible, modern out- look to an ancient system of binding laws. This bibliography provides law scholars with annotated citations to a selection of important sources related to Jewish law in Conservative Judaism, supplemented by brief explanations of the larger context of the resources. Introduction . 305 Historical Development of Conservative Judaism. 307 Primary Sources of Jewish Law in Conservative Judaism. 310 Secondary Sources of Jewish Law in Conservative Judaism. 316 Jewish Law and Conservative Judaism in Israel. 319 Conclusion . 320 Introduction ¶1 Conservative Judaism is an unfortunately named branch of liberal Judaism.1 If Orthodox Judaism stands on one side of the left-right divide of the Jewish com- munity (the right side), Conservative Judaism is firmly on the opposite (left) side. However, if the Jewish community is divided into those who view Jewish law as binding and those who do not, Conservative Judaism (in theory, at least) is firmly on the side of binding law, the same side as Orthodox Judaism. So Conservative Judaism occupies an uncomfortable position, firmly modern and liberal, while still adhering to a binding legal framework, which is a space largely occupied by the nonliberal camp of Orthodox Judaism. ¶2 This middle space is accompanied by many problems, but despite these problems, the conception of Jewish law offered by the Conservative movement represents an important and comprehensive vision that claims for itself a historical authenticity,2 and that is ideally suited to ensure that the exploration of Jewish law * © David Hollander, 2013.
