For the most part, it ignores the doctrines, faith, and practices of Orthodox Jews, and barely touches upon synagogue hie, which is the most meaningful expression of American Orthodoxy. It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Earlier predictions of the demise of 11 am indebted to many people who assisted me in making this essay possible. More than 40, active in a variety of Orthodox organizations, gave freely of their time for extended discussions and interviews and many lay leaders and rabbis throughout the United States responded to a mail questionnaire. A number of people read a draft of this paper. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few by name, at the same time exonerating them of any responsibility for errors of fact or for my own judgments and interpretations. One might think that this is a colorful and charming theme; but in truth it is much more. It reflects the Jewish approach to teaching Torah. Every morning we begin the Shacharit service with blessings called Birkhot HaTorah. Among the blessings we declare l,ru , hrcs ,t ubhvkt ‘v tb crgvu – “ Please, Lord our God, make the words of Your Torah sweet in our mouths. ” The 18th century rabbinic thinker and prolific author, Yaakov Emden, noted that this is a pragmatic request. We pray that Torah will be sweet for everyone to enjoy, making it universally desirable among all Jews. A number of years ago, on a visit to our Shul, the President of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation, Jay Sanderson, remarked how impressed he was that children come over to me on Shabbat to receive lollipops. He exclaimed that encouraging children to come to their rabbi for something sweet will guarantee the future of our people. He further ruminated, “We also need lollipops for the adults so that they too will be excited by their Judaism.” It is our hope that in this Program Calendar, filled with exciting and stimulating programs, many of which are appearing for the first time, you will find the sweetness of Torah that will stimulate your thought and expand your Jewish education. Introduction . 305 Historical Development of Conservative Judaism. 307 Primary Sources of Jewish Law in Conservative Judaism. 310 Secondary Sources of Jewish Law in Conservative Judaism. 316 Jewish Law and Conservative Judaism in Israel. 319 Conclusion . 320 Introduction ¶1 Conservative Judaism is an unfortunately named branch of liberal Judaism.1 If Orthodox Judaism stands on one side of the left-right divide of the Jewish com- munity (the right side), Conservative Judaism is firmly on the opposite (left) side. However, if the Jewish community is divided into those who view Jewish law as binding and those who do not, Conservative Judaism (in theory, at least) is firmly on the side of binding law, the same side as Orthodox Judaism. So Conservative Judaism occupies an uncomfortable position, firmly modern and liberal, while still adhering to a binding legal framework, which is a space largely occupied by the nonliberal camp of Orthodox Judaism. ¶2 This middle space is accompanied by many problems, but despite these problems, the conception of Jewish law offered by the Conservative movement represents an important and comprehensive vision that claims for itself a historical authenticity,2 and that is ideally suited to ensure that the exploration of Jewish law * © David Hollander, 2013.

A lot of this information was volunteered in response to the last edition. We thank those who took the effort to provide this information and be mezakeh the Klal in this way. We would like to stress that this is not intended as a comprehensive listing of Kiruv organizations. Only those organizations which have resources directly available to other organizations were included. The list is by no means exhaustive and we certainly did not intend any evaluative innuendoes by the selection of those we included and excluded. In general, we restricted our list to resources located in the USA or serving the USA. In addition, the organizations we did mention were described with an emphasis to their utility value to other organizations rather than a comprehensive description of their activities. There are many local organizations which have programs and other things of value to contribute. Generally, these were left out. We were certainly not able to include all resources here, nor even make an appropriate prioritization. We apologize for all the omissions.
