Its demolition served as a rallying cry for early preservationists and students of historic preservation study its importance. Having been both a Massachusetts schoolchild and student of historic preservation, this project has inspired and challenged me for the past nine months. To begin, I must thank those who came before me who studied the objects and legacy of the Hancock house. I am greatly indebted to the research efforts of Henry Ayling Phillips (1852- 1926) and Harriette Merrifield Forbes (1856-1951). Exploring Boston’s Religious History It is impossible to understand Boston without knowing something about its religious past. 1 2, 3, 4 Dexter Row (1836) From Boston Landmark Commission’s Charlestown Historic Resources Study 1981 (E. W. Gordon, Consultant)*: 2, 3, 4, Dexter Row 2015 Dexter Row is a trio of flat front Greek Revival townhouses constructed of red brick with granite and brownstone trimmings. Originally six houses were part of the block- numbers 1, 5, and 6 are no longer extant. The buildings rise three stories from granite-faced basements to a gable roof, with two pedimented dormers per building. They have three bay main façades and side hall plans. There are partially below-grade basement entrances. 2 Flights of granite steps with ornate cast iron railings lead to recessed entrances. Outer entrance enframements consist of simple Doric pilasters with heavy pedimented entablatures, composed of brownstone, reworked on number 4. Multi-pane sidelights and transoms flank replacement front doors. The windows have a simple brownstone sills and lintels, with 1/1 wood sash except for 6/6 on number 4’s first floor. Tall second floor windows strike an elegant note and open onto cast iron railing/balconies (cast iron elements mostly intact). The tall second-floor windows of number 4 have been shortened. A broad oriel window/ storefront (ca. late 19th century?) covering two bays of number 3 features crisp paneling and openings containing a single pane of glass. An Italianate oriel (ca.1850s) has been added to number 2's second floor center. 3 Architect: Alexander Parris and/or George Minot Dexter? - Attributed Builder: Shadrach Varney-"developer", supervisor of construction" Original owner: Shadrach Varney and others Dexter Row has a rich inventory of cast iron elements with front yards bordered by circa late 1830s-1840s cast iron fencing, elegant stair rails with swirling curvilinear linear forms, and a pineapple motif worked into gate posts. -

Asher Benjamin As an Architect in Windsor, Vermont
Summer 1974 VOL. 42 NO.3 The GpROCEEDINGS of the VERMONT HISTORICAL SOCIETY This famous architect built a meetinghouse and three private houses in Windsor before he left for Boston in 1802 ... Asher Benjamin as an Architect in Windsor, Vennont By JOHN QUINAN N August of 1802 the architect Asher Benjamin wrote from Boston to I Gideon Granger, the Postmaster General of the United States, seeking aid in obtaining a commission for a marine hospital in that city. Benjamin's letter identifies by name and location most of his first eight commissions - a rare and unusual document in American architectural history which enables us to trace his path northward from Hartford, Con necticut, to Windsor, Vermont. Benjamin wrote, in part: "Sir, I have since I left Suffield Conn. built the following houses, Viz. Samuel Hinckley, Northampton, William Coleman's Greenfield, Luke Baldwin's Esq., Brookfield, and a Meeting House and three other large houses in Windsor, Vermont, The Academy at Deerfield. l Most of these commissions have not fared very well. The Deerfield Academy building (Memorial Hall, 1798-1799) was altered sufficiently during the nineteenth century to obscure much of its original character. The Baldwin and Hinckley houses (both c.17%) were demolished early in the twentieth century and are lost to us, and it seems that the William Coleman house in Greenfield (1797) (Fig. 6) is the sole survivor of Benjamin's first decade of practice. But what of the four unnamed build ings in Windsor? Are they identifiable? Do they still stand in Windsor? Have they any special interest or significance? The four Windsor buildings are identifiable despite the fact that the three houses have been demolished and the meetinghouse has been altered I. -

Built between 1795 and 1798, the dome was originally constructed of wood shingles, and later replaced with a copper coating. Today, the dome gleams in the sun, thanks to a covering of 23-karat gold leaf. 3. A Pictoral History of the Boston Music Hall and the Great Organ
A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE BOSTON MUSIC HALL AND THE GREAT ORGAN by Ed Sampson, President, Methuen Memorial Music Hall, Inc. 2018 Few instruments in the history of pipe organs in America have had as long, or as distinguished, a career as the Boston Music Hall Organ. The first concert organ in the country, it remains today one of the outstanding organs in America. The need for a large and centrally-located concert hall for Boston was discussed at the annual meeting of the Harvard Musical Association, founded in 1837 (Henry White Pickering (1811-1898), President) on January 31, 1851. A "Music Hall Committee", comprised of members Robert East Apthorp (1812-1882), George Derby (1819-1874), John Sullivan Dwight (1813-1893), Charles Callahan Perkins (1822-1886), and Dr. Jabez Baxter Upham (1820- 1902), was appointed to address the matter. The Boston Music Hall was built in 1852 by the Boston Music-Hall Association, founded in 1851 (Jabez Baxter Upham, President) and by the Harvard Musical Association, that contributed $100,000 towards its construction. It stood in the center of a block that sloped downward from Tremont Street to Washington Street; and was between Winter Street on the south and Bromfield Street on the north. Almost entirely surrounded by other buildings, only glimpses of the hall's massive granite block foundation and plain brick walls could be seen. There were two entrances to the Music Hall: the Bumstead Place entrance, (named after Thomas Bumstead (1740-1828) a Boston coachmaker), off Tremont Street (later Hamilton Place) opposite the Park Street Church; 1 and the Central Place or Winter Place (later Music Hall Place) entrance off Winter Street. -

Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events Boston Art Commission 100 Public Artworks: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the Financial District and the North End 1. Lief Eriksson by Anne Whitney This life-size bronze statue memorializes Lief Eriksson, the Norse explorer believed to be the first European to set foot on North America. Originally sited to overlook the Charles River, Eriksson stands atop a boulder and shields his eyes as if surveying unfamiliar terrain. Two bronze plaques on the sculpture’s base show Eriksson and his crew landing on a rocky shore and, later, sharing the story of their discovery. When Boston philanthropist Eben N. Horsford commissioned the statue, some people believed that Eriksson and his crew landed on the shore of Massachusetts and founded their settlement, called Vinland, here. However, most scholars now consider Vinland to be located on the Canadian coast. This piece was created by a notable Boston sculptor, Anne Whitney. Several of her pieces can be found around the city. Whitney was a fascinating and rebellious figure for her time: not only did she excel in the typically ‘masculine’ medium of large-scale sculpture, she also never married and instead lived with a female partner. 2. Ayer Mansion Mosaics by Louis Comfort Tiffany At first glance, the Ayer Mansion seems to be a typical Back Bay residence. Look more closely, though, and you can see unique elements decorating the mansion’s façade. Both inside and outside, the Ayer Mansion is ornamented with colorful mosaics and windows created by the famed interior designer Louis Comfort Tiffany.
