The first chapter discusses the kindsof ideas people have about Indians, especially stereotypes of Indians being wild, red-colored, and uncivilized. The second chapterlooks at the prehistory of Indian culture to see the ways in which Indianpeoples learned to exploit the land. The excavations ofan Indian camp site at Green Point, Michigan, are described, including discussionof the dig, findings, and changes in Indian life from S00-1700A.D. Chapter three recounts Indian-white relations during 1600-1900 inorder to explore what happened when a stone-age culture facedan acquisitive white culture that was more highly developed and hadmore resources. • Economic Development DRAFT TEXT 28/08/2008
Annual Report 2007/08 Economic development DRAFT TEXT 28/08/2008 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OUR APPROACH Wellington has enjoyed steady economic growth in recent years. Unemployment is low, incomes are relatively high, and the city has retained a healthy government and financial sector while also making progress towards developing new high-tech and creative industries. Under the Wellington Regional Strategy, economic development agency Grow Wellington has principal responsibility for promoting economic development throughout the region. We support economic development generally through provision of many of the facilities and services that make this a great place for workers and their families to live and for businesses to locate. We also provide specific support for tourism through the marketing of Positively Wellington Tourism and the attraction of iconic events. CASE STUDY: HOMEGROWN Wellington’s waterfront rocked for the Homegrown Music Festival. Held over Anzac Weekend 2008, the Vodafone Homegrown Music Festival attracted a sold- out crowd of thousands. The festival featured 33 bands and DJs across five stages. Headline acts included a who’s who of New Zealand music: Shihad, Pluto, Kora, the Mint Chicks, Opshop, Elemeno-P, Salmonella Dub, The Black Seeds, The Phoenix Foundation, and more. All stages were either indoors or in massive marquees to ensure the event could go ahead rain or shine. Art installations, street performers and stalls for arts and crafts, food and clothing all complemented the on-stage entertainment. Festival venues, all on Wellington’s waterfront, included the TSB Arena and Shed 6, Frank Kitts Park and the Lagoon. Festival organisers encouraged use of sustainable transport to and from venues, as well as recycling of food and drink containers.

80sX Let’s face it, the 1980’s were responsible for some truly horrific crimes against fashion: shoulder-pads, leg-warmers, the unforgivable mullet ! What’s evident though, now more than ever, is that the 80’s provided us with some of the best music ever made. It doesn’t seem to matter if you were alive in the 80’s or not, those songs still resonate with people and trigger a joyous reaction for anyone that hears them. Auckland band 80sX take the greatest new wave, new romantic and synth pop hits and recreate the magic and sounds of the 80’s with brilliant musicianship and high energy vocals. Drummer and programmer Andrew Maclaren is the founding member of multi platinum selling band stellar* co-writing mega hits 'Violent', 'All It Takes' and 'Taken' amongst others. During those years he teamed up with Tom Bailey from iconic 80’s band The Thompson Twins to produce three albums, winning 11 x NZ music awards, selling over 100,000 albums and touring the world. Andrew Thorne plays lead guitar and brings a wealth of experience to 80’sX having played all the guitars on Bic Runga’s 11 x platinum debut album ‘Drive’. He has toured the world with many of New Zealand’s leading singer songwriter’s including Bic, Dave Dobbyn, Jan Hellriegel, Tim Finn and played support for international acts including Radiohead, Bryan Adams and Jeff Buckley. • Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

EUROPEAN TOUR MARCH-APRIL FLIP GRATER 2011 Flip has delivered an album with a rare sensitivity .There are echoes in the delivery of the finest French singers a la Françoise Hardy and Carla Bruni- except Flip is singing in English. A beautiful rare gem. Roger Marbeck A beautifully crafted album by a songwriter who has honed her craft, presenting us with a album of substance, raw fragility and strength. This is her best work yet. – Jan Hellriegel “When you listen to Flip Grater you can’t help but fall in love with her a little bit. Her latest album is languid, smooth and delicious.” – Samantha Hayes, 3news The best art comes from suffering, so returning from Sweden in her twenties with a broken heart, music was her antidote. With over seven years of creating a sound Flip Grater is renowned for, the release of an EP, three critically acclaimed albums (2006's Cage For A Song, 2008's Be All And End All and 2010’s While I’m Awake I’m At War, a published book and a tour history that takes her meandering through 11 or so countries, Flip is seasoned. In 2006 her track Long Awaited Sigh turned heads across the folk and alt-country scene, with a track from it selected by producers of the hit US TV show Brothers and Sisters. This was followed by two trips to SXSW festival in Austin, TX with a showcase line-up including Luke Zimmerman and Kris Kristoffeson. Flip’s latest release While I’m Awake I’m At War has had NZ media calling her “the brunette¨ Stevie Nicks due to songs such as the single 'Careful', a meandering alt country ditty with a Fleetwood Mac feel.
