TX Craft Beer Week—The Puckish Nick Lowe—Side Ef Vol. 4 JUNE 2012 JUNE — issue 6 issue Also inside: When Asia Isn’t Exactly Asia—Plaza Implosion Postmortem— TX Craft Beer Week—The Puckish Nick Lowe—Side Effects—LOUD! FEST In Pickchures—12 Summer Reads—Todd On Film—Concert Calendar Asia Not Asia Every year I allot precious column inches to crapping all over College Station’s Starlight Music Series, a set of five or six concerts held over the summer at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater. My general complaint is that, aside from 979Represent is a local magazine booking Rosie Flores and Cowboy Mouth, most of the head- lining acts have been crumby tribute bands or some other for the discerning dirtbag. bullshit. My point of view has been that I believe the City of College Station has a completely different take on what the Starlight Series should be than me. Okay, so be it. The Editorial bored attraction is getting families to camp out and enjoy music in the park, not about bringing awesome music to College Kelly Minnis—Kevin Still Station. I’m cool with that. What I wish they’d do is instead of paying thousands to bring cover bands to town that they Art Splendidness should instead pay those thousands of dollars to local cover bands and keep the money here and promote local artists. Wonko The Sane—Katie Killer Make the locals the feature artists instead of letting them open for the touring version of the locals. But that is what it is, and I let it be. Folks That Do Other Shit For Us Until I noticed a couple of months back that Starlight had Tom Callins, Jack A. Cheshire, Heather De Lion, booked Asia for June 16th. WHAT?! YOU MEAN “HEAT OF Mike L. Downey, James Gray, Todd Hansen, Mary THE MOMENT”, “DON’T CRY” JOHN MOTHERFUCKING WETTON, STEVE MOTHERFUCKING HOWE, CARL MOTHER- Manning, Devin Place, Michael Roe, Jason Smith FUCKING PALMER AND GEOFF MOTHERFUCKING DOWNES ARE PLAYING MY HOMETOWN FOR FREE?!?!?!?!?!? I got real excited and prepared to eat every bad word I’d ever written On the Internetz Cloud Thingy at about Starlight. Until I did a little bit of research, hoping http://www.979represent.com that maybe I could sneak backstage and meet these giants Emaily to [email protected] of progressive rock. I mean, these dudes have all collec- tively been in King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson Lake and Palmer! They are heroes to me. And I know the original Materials for review & bribery can be sent to: lineup has been back together for several years now. Imag- 979Represent ine my consternation to discover that College Station did 1707 Austin Ave. not book that Asia. They instead booked Asia featuring John Payne. So who the fuck is John Payne? Turns out he College Station, TX 77840 played with Asia 20 years ago after everyone except Downes had abandoned the band and was the band’s bassist/ vocalist until 2006 when Downes put the original lineup back together. Downes owns the name “Asia”. The agree- ment was that Payne could use the name of “ASIA featuring John Payne” so it’s not exactly like the fake Frankie Goes To AD RATES Hollywood that toured America throughout the ‘90s that didn’t feature a single original bandmember, or wait, isn’t it INSIDE FULL PAGE—$50 exactly like that? There are no original members of Asia in FULL BACK PAGE—$50 Asia Featuring John Payne. It’s like a tribute band that has ALL RATES MONTHLY. the real band’s blessing, kinda like Sublime With Rome, but at least those cats have the original Sublime rhythm section. BUY 2 GET ONE FREE This Asia has none. Yet this dude Payne was in Asia longer CALL 979-204-4850 FOR DETAILS than anyone else besides Geoff Downes. I don’t know why this should bother me. I went on record in The Eagle a year or so ago complaining about Chicago playing at Texas A&M and 40 years later the band has two original members out of the 12 or so that started the band. I feel it’s a cheat to a certain extent. But last year I had the chance to see Chameleons Vox (an American band fronted by Chameleons UK singer Mark Burgess playing the old songs) and ditched my Mudhoney tickets to go. It wound up not exactly “Vox” because I could tell the original Chame- leons drummer was with them (he sets his kit up in a very distinct way) and then at night’s end we learned that Reg was playing guitar too, so we were seeing 3/4 of the Chame- leons anyways. But it wouldn’t have mattered because I was hearing the voice of the band singing those songs. I think that is my problem with Asia featuring John Payne. He is not the voice of the classic 1980s Asia material. That is John Wetton, and a little later, Greg Lake. The current band is filled with rock veterans who’ve all at one point played with people like Badfinger, Roger Daltrey, Chris Squire, Racer X and The Scream so these aren’t exactly hacks. I’m sure the show will be cool, and at least it’s not another fucking Eagles tribute band. Along with last month’s Mar- shall Tucker Band appearance (featuring at least one guy from the original lineup) it seems that Starlight is starting to at least pay attention to doing something a little more authentic. Let’s at least say this is the first Starlight show that I will haul the kids, the blankets and the cooler down for. And that’s saying something.—KELLY MINNIS Plaza Implosion Draws 1000’s Todd On Film Random observations from the Plaza Hotel tower implosion I have climbed atop my movie soapbox on a few May 24th that drew a crowd of thousands. occasions to proclaim the greatness of elite comedic actors. • Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices
Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Yuichiro Kobayashi1, Misaki Amagasa**, and Takafumi Suzuki** Abstract Popular songs can be regarded as a fine representation of modern society and culture. In particular, the lyrics of popular songs are the most important aspect for understanding the sense of values and linguistic sensitivity in a given generation and community. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the chronological variation of popular Japanese songs using stylometric techniques. This study draws on the lyrics of 858 songs, which appeared on the Oricon annual top 20 single hit chart between 1976 and 2015. The linguistic features investigated in this study include five different types of lexical indices, namely (a) number of words, (b) parts-of-speech, (c) word types, (d) character types, and (e) vocabulary level. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to explore the chronological change in the frequencies of lexical indices. The results showed that the frequencies of word types and character types dramatically changed before and after 1990. Moreover, the usages of auxiliary verbs as well as lower level vocabulary became more prominent, whereas the frequencies of adjectival nouns and conjunctions decreased. The findings suggest that a turning point in cultural trends corresponds with the historically significant political and economic events, such as the end of the Showa era and the burst of the bubble economy. 1. Introduction Popular songs provide a special kind of window into modern society and culture. In the United States, a number of people listen to top-ranked songs on the Billboard chart, and many songwriters make an effort to compose songs that can reach not just domestic listeners but also overseas fans.

• Edith Nesbit - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Edith Nesbit - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Edith Nesbit(15 August 1858 – 4 May 1924) Edith Nesbit (married name Edith Bland) was an English author and poet whose children's works were published under the name of E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on over 60 books of fiction for children, several of which have been adapted for film and television. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a precursor to the modern Labour Party. Biography Nesbit was born in 1858 at 38 Lower Kennington Lane in Kennington, Surrey (now part of Greater London), the daughter of an agricultural chemist, John Collis Nesbit, who died in March 1862, before her fourth birthday. Her sister Mary's ill health meant that the family moved around constantly for some years, living variously in Brighton, Buckinghamshire, France (Dieppe, Rouen, Paris, Tours, Poitiers, Angoulême, Bordeaux, Arcachon, Pau, Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and Dinan in Brittany), Spain and Germany, before settling for three years at Halstead Hall in Halstead in north-west Kent, a location which later inspired The Railway Children (this distinction has also been claimed by the Derbyshire town of New Mills). When Nesbit was 17, the family moved again, this time back to London, living variously in South East London at Eltham, Lewisham, Grove Park and Lee. A follower of William Morris, 19-year-old Nesbit met bank clerk Hubert Bland in 1877. Seven months pregnant, she married Bland on 22 April 1880, though she did not immediately live with him, as Bland initially continued to live with his mother.

• Garbage, Die Band Um Die Schottische Sängerin Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker Und Butch Vig, Kommt Zurück Nach Deutschland!

• Class, Status, Closure the Petropolis and Cultural Life
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by NORA - Norwegian Open Research Archives CLASS, STATUS, CLOSURE THE PETROPOLIS AND CULTURAL LIFE Vegard Jarness Dissertation for the degree philosophiae doctor (PhD) at the University of Bergen 2013 Dissertation date: 24 May 2013 ii iii Abstract This thesis concerns the correspondence between relations of social class and relations of social status. Dating back to the early days of the social sciences, the debate about class and status has been revitalised in the wake of the initial advances made by the late French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), who firmly asserted that class relations express themselves through socially structured, and symbolically significant, lifestyle differences in contemporary societies. As a point of departure this thesis takes the debate about the applicability of Bourdieu’s theoretical- methodological framework and his substantial claims about what I call the class- status nexus to investigate processes of social closure based on lifestyle differences; in particular differences in people’s consumption preferences and aesthetical tastes. It addresses the question of whether, and if so in which ways, such lifestyle differences lead to social boundaries being formed between more or less exclusive groups of people. Empirically investigating an urban community located on the south-west coast of Norway – the city of Stavanger – the study is based on qualitative interviews with forty-six individuals located in different classes and class fractions. Three substantial claims are forwarded. First, the analysis points to structural affinities between class positions and different cultural tastes. In particular, the thesis makes the point that how people appreciate cultural and material goods is at least as significant as what they prefer, consume or engage in.
