The materials differ from standard textbooks and workbooks in several ways: simplified text; smaller units of study; reduced vocabulary level; increased frequency of drill and practice; concise directions; and presentation of skills in small, sequential steps. The unit focuses on world history and correlates to Florida's Sunshine State Standards. It is divided into the following 12 units of study that correspond to identified social studies strands:(1) the Industrial Revolution;(2) major events and achievements of the 19th century;(3) imperialism;(4) World War I and aftermath;(5) the Russian Revolution and the Soviet regime;(6) the world between the wars; (7) Fascist dictators;(8) buildup and events of World War II;(9) the Cold War and postwar period of Europe;(10) Asia;(11) the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America; and the (12) fall of the Soviet Union. For each unit, the guide includes a description of the unit's content and describes the focus, provides suggestions for enrichment, and contains an assessment to measure student performance. Appendices in the teacher's guide include recommended instructional strategies and teaching suggestions. Appendices in the student guide include excerpts from Nazi war criminal and Holocaust survivor testimonials. (Contains 112 references.)     CHAPTER 2 BERLIN DURING THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC The period of the Weimar Republic is divided into three periods, 1918 to 1923, 1924 to 1929, and 1930 to 1933, but we usually associate Weimar culture with the middle period when the post WWI revolutionary chaos had settled down and before the Nazis made their aggressive claim for power. This second period of the Weimar Republic after 1924 is considered Berlin’s most prosperous period, and is often referred to as the “Golden Twenties”. They were exciting and extremely vibrant years in the history of Berlin, as a sophisticated and innovative culture developed including architecture and design, literature, film, painting, music, criticism, philosophy, psychology, and fashion. For a short time Berlin seemed to be the center of European creativity where cinema was making huge technical and artistic strides. Like a firework display, Berlin was burning off all its energy in those five short years. A literary walk through Berlin during the Weimar period begins at the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s new part that came into its prime during the Weimar period. Large new movie theaters were built across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church, the Capitol und Ufa-Palast, and many new cafés made the Kurfürstendamm into Berlin’s avant-garde boulevard. Max Reinhardt’s theater became a major attraction along with bars, nightclubs, wine restaurants, Russian tearooms and dance halls, providing a hangout for Weimar’s young writers. But Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm is mostly famous for its revered literary cafés, Kranzler, Schwanecke and the most renowned, the Romanische Café in the impressive looking Romanische Haus across from the Memorial church.

Watts is Professor of Economics at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Abstract This paper presents a monetary explanation for the U.S. recession of 1797. Credit expansion initiated by the Bank of the United States in the early 1790s unleashed a bout of inflation and low real interest rates, which spurred a speculative investment bubble in real estate and capital intensive manufacturing and infrastructure projects. A correction occurred as domestic inflation created a disparity in international prices that led to a reduction in net exports. Specie flowed out of the country, prices began to fall, and real interest rates spiked. In the ensuing credit crunch, businesses reliant upon rolling over short term debt were rendered unsustainable. The general economic downturn, which ensued throughout 1797 and 1798, involved declines in the price level and nominal GDP, the bursting of the real estate bubble, and a cluster of personal bankruptcies and business failures.

The current historical consensus is that the suspension was a result of the state's need to finance the war, France’s remonetization, a loss of confidence in the English country banks, and a run on the Bank of England’s reserves following a landing of French troops in Wales. We argue that while these factors help us understand the timing of the Restriction period, they cannot explain its success. We deploy new long-term data which leads us to a complementary explanation: the policy succeeded thanks to the reputation of the Bank of England, achieved through a century of prudential collaboration between the Bank and the Treasury. The IPN was represented by its Deputy President, Krzysztof Szwagrzyk, Ph.D, D.Sc.and Adam Siwek, the Director of the IPN’s Office for Commemorating the Struggle and Martyrdom. The ceremonies commemorating the victims of the Volhynia Massacre took place by the monument to the Victims of Genocide, committed by Ukrainian nationalists on the citizens of the Second Polish Republic in the south-eastern provinces of Poland in the years 1942–1947 on 11 July 2021 at 8:00 p.m. The relatives of the victims, representatives of the authorities and organizations devoted to preserving the memory of the Borderlands took part in a mass for the murdered. After the national anthem and occasional speeches, flowers were placed under the plaques with the names of places from the pre-war provinces of the Second Polish Republic where the slaughter took place. Then, the participants of the ceremony went to the monument of the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division of the Home Army, where they laid wreaths. Not only have the American people turned against the war, but Vietnam Veterans Against the War has been able to make a bigger contribution to changing people’s minds about the war than ever before. At our late October National Meeting, the best attended in many, many years, we resolved to further deepen our participation in the national anti-war movement. We heard local representatives talk about their speaking to high school classes, raising funds for the My Lai Peace Park in Vietnam, representing veterans at local anti-war demonstrations, offering personal support to returning Iraq vets, attending local vigils on the night of the 2000th U.S military death in the Iraq war, and engaging in civil disobedience at the White House. Ray Parrish, our military counselor, regularly makes a real difference in the lives of individual veter- ans and GI’s. Ray tells me that some vets who call him want to deal with their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms in a political rather than a clinical setting. One vet he talked to had done two tours in Iraq. After the first tour, John didn’t really want to go back, but he didn’t talk to anyone in the GI counsel- ing movement because he was hearing from military commanders that people who opposed the war didn’t support the troops. He told Ray that, between tours, “he and Johnny Walker became best friends.” John got out of the military after his second tour.
