Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Yuichiro Kobayashi1, Misaki Amagasa**, and Takafumi Suzuki** Abstract Popular songs can be regarded as a fine representation of modern society and culture. In particular, the lyrics of popular songs are the most important aspect for understanding the sense of values and linguistic sensitivity in a given generation and community. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the chronological variation of popular Japanese songs using stylometric techniques. This study draws on the lyrics of 858 songs, which appeared on the Oricon annual top 20 single hit chart between 1976 and 2015. The linguistic features investigated in this study include five different types of lexical indices, namely (a) number of words, (b) parts-of-speech, (c) word types, (d) character types, and (e) vocabulary level. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to explore the chronological change in the frequencies of lexical indices. The results showed that the frequencies of word types and character types dramatically changed before and after 1990. Moreover, the usages of auxiliary verbs as well as lower level vocabulary became more prominent, whereas the frequencies of adjectival nouns and conjunctions decreased. The findings suggest that a turning point in cultural trends corresponds with the historically significant political and economic events, such as the end of the Showa era and the burst of the bubble economy. 1. Introduction Popular songs provide a special kind of window into modern society and culture. In the United States, a number of people listen to top-ranked songs on the Billboard chart, and many songwriters make an effort to compose songs that can reach not just domestic listeners but also overseas fans. -

Garbage, die Band um die schottische Sängerin Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker und Butch Vig, kommt zurück nach Deutschland! Nachdem sich die Band in Madison im US-Bundesstaat Wisconsin formiert hatte, ist 1995 ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum erschienen. Die Platte mit Hits wie “Stupid Girl”, “Only Happy When It Rains”, “Queer” und Anderen verkaufte sich mehr als vier Millionen Mal und machte die Band um den erfolgreichen Produzenten Butch Vig - der unter anderem für Nirvanas “Nevermind” verantwortlich war - zu einer der einflussreichsten Alternative-Rock-Bands der USA. Ihr einzigartiger Sound und die provokante visuelle Ästhetik sorgten für weltweite Aufmerksamkeit und Erfolg. Das folgende Album “Version 2.0” überstieg den Erfolg des Debüts noch einmal, erreichte 1998 in vielen Ländern die Charts und wurde gleich in mehreren Kategorien – inklusive “Album des Jahres” - für einen Grammy nominiert. “Version 2.0” bleibt bis heute Garbages kommerziell erfolgreichstes Album. CSRC ORAL HISTORIES SERIES NO. 13, DECEMBER 2013 JUDITHE HERNÁNDEZ INTERVIEWED BY KAREN MARY DAVALOS ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2009, AND JULY 14, 2010 Judithe Hernández is a Los Angeles-based artist first recognized as a muralist and now widely known for her works in pastel. A member of Los Four for ten years, she participated in ten major exhibitions with the art collective. She has exhibited internationally, and her work has been acquired by private collectors and major institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the Bank of America collection in New York. She is the recipient of a COLA fellowship from the city of Los Angeles, and she was selected by the Los Angeles Transit Authority to create the art for the Santa Monica Metro station, scheduled to open in 2016. Karen Mary Davalos is chair and professor of Chicana/o studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Her research interests encompass representational practices, including art exhibition and collection; vernacular performance; spirituality; feminist scholarship and epistemologies; and oral history. Among her publications are Yolanda M. López (UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Press, 2008); “The Mexican Museum of San Francisco: A Brief History with an Interpretive Analysis,” in The Mexican Museum of San Francisco Papers, 1971–2006 (UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Press, 2010); and Exhibiting Mestizaje: Mexican (American) Museums in the Diaspora (University of New Mexico Press, 2001). Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

What is this culture of piracy and what is at stake in trying to change it? In this article, I take an ethnographic look at music file-sharing, and compare the situation in the US with Japan, the second largest music market in the world. My findings are based on fieldwork in Tokyo, and surveys and discussions with US college students. By considering the ways social dynamics and cultural orientations guide uses of digital media technology, I argue that a legal and political focus on ‘piracy’ ignores crucial aspects of file-sharing, and is misleading in the assumptions it makes for policy.
