Stephen Kalanikū “Buddy” Gumpfer: (9 February 1944 - 12 December 2014). Way before I met Bud Gumpfer, I knew of the knucklehead exploits of his dad, Ironworker Joe Gumpfer who used to hangout with the local operating engineers from Sheedy Drayage at the old Rumours Lounge on Fillmore in San Franciscoʻs Cow Hollow District. That grouping included Chocolate Miller and Jim Apao from Sheedy and a bunch of longshoreman and warehousemen from the ILUW. It was a great watering hole for locals to just hang out and talk story. The Brothers of the Country [Curtis & Keoki Correa and Barry Levy) provided the Hawaiian music and Bruce Wakabayashi used to help owner Evelyn Nakamoto provide pupus and food for its customers; Evelynʻs son Lance ran the bar. When I started the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band in1984, Evie & Les Zane and their family were our staunchest supporters and we used to assemble our quarterly newsletter in their living room. Thatʻs were we met Bud Gumpfer and Frank Palakiko, who had each married a Kennedy twin from Pu‘unui; Lita and Lia. Les Zaneʻs dad Jim Līhau, the Kennedy girls and the Reverend all were linked together with familial connections to the Kamehameha Lodge. Even after we moved the newsletter assemblage to our new home Halemele, in Bayview Heights, Bud still came to help. Bud was born in Hilo and was the oldest child of Joseph and Mary Ann Gumpfer. He attended Hilo High School as a Freshman before moving to Honolulu, with his family in 1959. In Honolulu, Bud attended Kaimukī High School where he was not only an excellent student, but a football standout for three years. Graduating in 1962, Bud was offered a football scholarship to Boise State in Idaho. but instead, decided to move to Southern California where he attended Compton Community College. After a year at Compton CC, he moved to San Francisco and started working for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Switchman. In 1965, Bud was drafted into the US Army and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and deployed in Vietnam from 1966-1967. Bud was later stationed at Fort Ord, where he met his future wife, Carmelita Kennedy. He and his best friend, Frank Palakiko, and Litaʻs twin sister, Lia were married in a double wedding on 2 May 1970 and had 44 THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER!!PAGE 28 of 49 Home - Calendar - School events - ʻOhana searches - Place activities - Mai poina - Music Scene - KHB notes - Mahalo piha - Community

Budʻs passion was golfing at his favorite courses, Sharpʻs Park. Harding and occasionally, the Olympic Club. The Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band performed songs of Keaukaha at the reception of Budʻs memorial. These were the songs which Bud dearly loved. There, we met Budʻs sister, Gretchen Benko of the Lau Kanaka O Hawaii Hawaiian Civic Club of Arizona.

Hilario Larry Ramos: (19 April 1942 - 30 April 2014): Grangeville, Idaho, comes word that Larry Ramos has passed away. I didn’t personally know or meet him, but his enormous musical talent touched my heart down through the years. In the summer of 1967, in the company of my long time friend, June Kazuko Wada Onodera, I met a beautiful Kensington woman named Alice Temple Weldon at the New Orleans House, a dance club on San Pablo just off University in Berkeley. In a brief but beautiful romance, our love song was “” by the Association. Larry was one of the lead voices and the lead guitarist on that cut. Larry was born Hilario Ramos in Waimea, Kaua‘i to a musical family; his mother, Patrocinia sang and his father, Larry Sr. played ‘ukulele. At age 4, his dad taught Larry how to play “My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean” on the ‘ukulele. He bonded with that instrument sleeping with it just so that he could start practicing as soon as he awoke then constantly practicing sitting on the floor of a hotel gift shop where his mom worked. He, with his sister Carmen won an amateur talent contest when he was five. By age seven, he had appeared in the Esther Williams and Howard Keel MGM movie musical, “Pagan Love Song,” playing the ‘ukulele while singing Arthur Freed & Harry Warrenʻs “The House of Singing Bamboo.” Soon after that, Larry won the Arthur Godfrey territory wide ‘ukulele contest and the ‘ukulele playing Godfrey took him to New York City and featured the young boy on both his radio and television shows. When he was thirteen Larry was cast as the Crown Prince in the touring company of The King and I with Yul Brynner. Larryʻs recollection of the “Hollywood star” was that he was a “real jerk.” Larry grew up in the Bell area of Los Angeles, graduating from Bell High School, and majoring in Political Science at East Los Angeles College and Cerritos College. Playing and singing at coffeehouses, Larry was asked to join the New Christy Minstrels where he mainly played banjo, also honing his multi-instrumental proficiency and his vocal technique and learned how to perform and vocalize, ensemble style. Larryʻs performing career offers valuable lessons for any fledging performer. He performed with the New Christy Minstrels for four years, which gave him wonderful exposure as the group enjoyed a string of hits, toured constantly, and made regular television appearances on the Andy Williams Show, as well as getting their own network specials and winning a Grammy. He wed Helene Luman deemed as a typical Nevada marriage; entertainer meets blackjack dealer. Larry says, “they gave us six months.” The marriage lasted over 50 years. Now, with family responsibilities, Larry yearned to spend less time on grueling road trips and more time with his wife and newborn twin daughters. On the day that they were delivered THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER!!PAGE 29 of 49 Home - Calendar - School events - ʻOhana searches - Place activities - Mai poina - Music Scene - KHB notes - Mahalo piha - Community

The next time he saw his family the twins were six months old. Thatʻs when Larry quit the New Christy Minstrels telling the producers he wanted to be there for his kids as they grew up. He was told, youʻll never work in the music world again. You young musicians; are you getting the point of all this? In this period, Larry recorded one solo single, "It'll Take a Little Time," for Columbia Records and was pursuing a career as a single act, playing gigs at the Playboy Club in Los Angeles and later touring Japan. In early 1967, Larry was recruited to join the Association as lead guitarist, and performed on the bandʻs third album, , their hit single "Windy,” and played the Monterey Pop Festival with the group. Larryʻs lead guitar playing and his vocal harmony acumen was the core of the Associationʻs sound up until he left the group in 1976. But, in 1979, the Association re-formed for a Coconut Grove concert and a performance at Kono Hawai‘i in Santa Ana. Since 1984, Larry and drummer Russ Giguere have co-owned the bandʻs name. Even with his accomplishments in all those years of performing, Larry was always painfully made aware of the ugly specter of racism; of being the only brown face in a sea of white performers. Larryʻs final concert appearance took place at the Blue Fox Theater in Grangeville, Idaho on 24 February 2014, where he has lived since 1995. It is Heleneʻs hometown. The sold out concert was organized by Larry for his family and friends featured a version of “Never My Love” with Hawaiian lyrics. Shortly before he passed he celebrated his last birthday on Kaua‘i and his 50 years of marriage to Helene. Larry Ramos passed away 30 April 2014, 11 days after his 72nd birthday, in a Clarkson, Washington hospital. He had given us nearly 70 years of his music. Larry is survived by his mother, Patrocinia, his wife, Helene; daughters, Tracy (Chris), Stacy. & Keli (Ross); sons, Larry Ramos III; & Terry (Amy); sister, Carmen (Dan); and brother Del. He was blessed with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. With Larryʻs passing, his brother, Del Ramos has assumed leadership of the Association. This written tribute cannot possibly surpass Larryʻs legacy as delineated on his Facebook page. It is indeed indebted to that Page and to Wayne Harada (Honolulu Star Advertiser); Guy Aoki (Rafu Shimpo); Steve Hanks (LewistonTribune); Dave Swanson; Bruce Eder; Jennifer K. Bauer; Wikipidia.

TALK STORY:.

Aloha By The Bay Concert: Last December, with our weekly ʻukulele classes on Holiday hiatus, Auntie and I snuck out on a rare free Wednesday night to see the annual Aloha By The Bay Concert held at the West Bay Conference Center in San Franciscoʻs Fillmore District. T H E K A P A L A K I K O N E W S L E T T E R Itʻs a new and nice enough venue right across Eddy Street from the old Yoshiʻs San Francisco. which is now called The Addition. Despite bouncing acoustics, insufficient lighting and blocked sight lines, the concert was a real blast featuring Waipuna and Mark Yamanaka, with the SF Bay Areaʻs Steve Espaniola opening the show. It was especially exciting to see David Kamakahiʻs ʻukulele virtuosity and Mark Yamanakaʻs powerful falsetto. But it was Markʻs band that held my rapt attention. For one thing that Hawai‘i Moku sound is in my blood. My familial and musical roots emanate from Kona and hearing that music constantly takes me back to the music of Ledward Ka‘apana, Uncle Fred Punahoa, Sonny Lim, Tommy Solomon, Gary Haleamau, my own uncle, Sam Kawahara and especially the plaintiff playing of Elias Kuamo‘o, arguably, my favorite kī hō’alu performer. Thatʻs the sound I want for the KHB. Markʻs young side men are monsters in the making; the bass player at times used Ryan Tangʻs slap bass technique and on Hōlei the guitar player was a third and fifth above Marks lead voicing in harmony. I didn’t get their names but I know I will hear more about them in Hawaiian music circles in the future. Let me back up a little. I first heard Mark perform as a contestant in the Kindy Sproat Falsetto contest. He was about 15 at the time and along with Kaniela Akaka, I was one of the judges. At that age, he still did not have command of his voice and I downgraded his contest score. He did not come in first. Learning that he was a student of Johnny Lum Ho of Hilo, I made a note on my contest score sheet that this young guy was going to develop into a superstar, and I was right. I am very much aware and in awe of Johnnyʻs work. One of my favorite LP recordings features Johnny as part of the group Ho‘onanea, a collaborative effort of him and Bernard Kalua on the groupʻs recording, “Nanea,” Pumehana Records PS4913, 1979. This was even before Johnnyʻs association with Oliver Kelly and his gems Darren Benitez, Kuana Torres Kahele (not to mention Nā Palapalai) and of course, Mark Yamanaka. Fantastic! Besides itʻs not an easy task to perform Johnnyʻs musical arrangements and compositions. Try it sometime. The thIng I most admire about Markʻs development is that he has learned from Johnny the lessons on how to handle a lyric with the utmost respect for the nuances of Hawaiian poetry and elocution, something most musicians are not ma‘a to. To me, Markʻs vocal technique is akin to the late, great Dennis Pavao who vocalized unencumbered by breaks, glides, yodels and other vocal tricks that a lot of falsetto singers resort to, often obliterating the sweet flavor of a mele, or worst; disrupting the poetic rhythm of a lyric line. Show off time. Its not that falsetto singers should not use these devices; but rather, should know when to use them. Matt Sproat, the lead voice of Waipuna, and I are not strangers. He is my mentor, Kindy Sproatʻs nephew. Some years ago when Matt was working at the Outrigger Hotel in Waikīkī, he was put in charge of organizing a lunch time Christmas concert. He asked Bernard Kalua and Alika Odom to back him up. I just happen to be in Honolulu and got dragged along to play ‘ukulele. It was, sort of. put up or shut up; get my drift? It turned out to be a real nice concert as I recall and I have a nice photo to show for it. Currently, Waipuna (and Kūpaoa) are musical associates of the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band. Bassist Kale Hannahs is Līhau Paikʻs (of Kūpaoa) brother; and of course you all know who David Kamakahi is.
