Cavanaugh performs Elton John hits like “Tiny Dancer,” “Bennie and the Jets” and “Rocket Man,” as well as classics like “Live and Let Die” and “Pinball Wizard,” in a high-energy show led by frequent NJSO guest conductor and audience favorite Thomas Wilkins. “Michael Cavanaugh with the NJSO: Greatest Hits of Elton John and More” is the first of five 2016–17 NJSO Pops programs. Performances take place on Saturday, November 12, at 8 pm at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark and Sunday, November 13, at 3 pm at the State Theatre in New Brunswick. -
Brian Wilson's Spacious Estate in West Suburban St
May 24, 1998---- The backyard of Brian Wilson's spacious estate in west suburban St. Charles overlooks a calm pond. A playground set stands near the water. Wilson slowly walks out of the basement studio in the home he shares with wife Melinda and daughters Daria, 2, and Delanie, 6 months old. Wilson squints into the midday sun. He looks at a playground slide. Then he looks at a swing set. Wilson elects to sit down on the saddle swing. In a life of storied ups and downs, Wilson's career is on the upswing. The June release of ``Imagination'' (Giant Records) is a return to 1966's ``Pet Sounds'' in terms of orchestration and instrumentation, with its the ambitious patterns of tympanies and snare drums. But equally important are Wilson's vocals, which are the smoothest and most soulful since 1970's ``Sunflower.'' Wilson, 55, has suddenly defied age. Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend are brittle rock 'n' roll barnacles. Ray Davies and Paul McCartney have matured gracefully. Yet here's Wilson singing with effervescent hope on ``Dream Angel,'' which he co-wrote with his co-producer Joe Thomas and Jim Peterik of Survivor and Ides of March fame. The song was inspired by Wilson's new daughters. They make him happy. He says that is why he is writing happy music. On ``Dream Angel,'' Wilson even returned to the tight, late '50s harmonies of the Dell Vikings (``Come Go With Me'') and the Four Freshmen - happy-go-lucky voices that influenced the Beach Boys when they were young. -

MARK LINDSAY BIO The former lead singer and co- founder of Paul Revere & the Raiders, Mark Lindsay was born in Oregon but raised in Idaho, where he began his career as the rockabilly singer in Freddy Chapman's Idaho Playboys. His bandmates were the guitar playing brothers Dick and "Mooney" White. The White Brothers had another gig playing rock and roll in the Red Hughes Band. Red later hired Paul Revere Dick on piano to join them. One night at the IOOF Hall in Caldwell, Idaho, Mark Lindsay showed up to listen, but he soon ripped off his glasses and made his way blindly to the stage, then impulsively asked if he could sing a song. He did, relished the crowd response for a few moments, and then – overcome with shyness – hastily left the hall. The next morning, Mark was back at his job at McClure's Bakery. Covered in flour and with his coke-bottle glasses back on, he was soon visited by Revere, who had come in to pick up buns for his hamburger stand. While Mark wrapped the order, Revere started talking about an incident that had happened at the dance that he played the night before. “It was the weirdest thing!” said Revere. “In the middle of the show, this skinny kid with a crazy look in his eye came up to the stage and asked to sing a song. So we let him.” Mark, knowing full well who the stranger was, casually asked,“How was he?” “Not bad,” Revere admitted. “It was ME!” replied Mark. -

The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism. -

Smile was originally planned as the follow-up to the band's 1966 classic Pet Sounds, but the material was mostly abandoned due to creative mastermind Brian Wilson's fragile mental health at the time. Though no release date has been set, the official release of Smile will be sold as a two-CD set and as a deluxe box set including four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book penned by Beach Boys historian Dominic Priore. The final track listing has not been announced, but disc one of the CD set and the first three sides of the vinyl edition will contain a close approximation of the Smile album, with the remainder collecting outtakes and alternate versions from the sessions. The Smile sessions have been widely bootlegged among fans for decades, but the proper track listing for the album has never been established, largely due to the fact that the record was never completed as intended. According to engineer Mark Linett, Brian Wilson's 2004 version of Smile has been used as the template for this project, though it could turn out a bit different depending on input from Wilson and the surviving members of the group. -

I AM BRIAN WILSON Brian Wilson October 11th, 2016 OVERVIEW: As a cofounding member of The Beach Boys in the 1960s, Brian Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless music ever recorded. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, excessive drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band’s popularity, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and ultimately thriving. In his memoir entitled I Am Brian Wilson, he details the exhilarating highs and lows of his life from his failing memory, including the sources of his creative inspiration throughout the decades. - - - - - - - - - EARLY LIFE: Brian Wilson was born on June 20th, 1942 to Audree and Murry Wilson. Growing up in Hawthorne, California, Wilson exhibited unusual musical abilities, such as being able to hum the melody from When the Caissons Go Rolling Along after only a few verses had been sung by his father before the age of one. Surprisingly, a few years later, he was discovered to have diminished hearing in his right ear. The exact cause of this hearing loss is unclear, though theories range from him simply being born partially deaf to a blow to the head from his father, or a neighborhood bully, being to blame. While Wilson’s father was a reasonable provider, he was often abusive. A minor musician and songwriter, he also encouraged his children in this field in numerous ways. At an early age, Brian was given six weeks of lessons on a toy accordion and, at seven and eight, sang solos in church with a choir. -

INSIGHT OUT 2 Abstract Models of creative problem solving are predicated upon mental states to explain everything from the outcome of problem-solving experiments to the emergence of artistic creativity. We present two converging perspectives that describe a profoundly different ontological description of creativity. Our analysis proceeds from a distinction between first- order problem solving, where the agent interacts with a physical model of the problem and second-order problem solving, where the agent must cogitate a solution to a problem that is presented as a verbal description of a state of the world but where the agent does not or cannot transform physical elements of a problem. We acknowledge the recent evidence that foregrounds the importance of working memory in problem solving, including insight problem solving. However, we stress that the impressive psychometric success is obtained with a methodology that only measures second-order problem solving; we question whether first-order problem solving is equally well predicted by measures of cognitive or dispositional capacities. We propose that if mental simulation is replaced by the opportunity to engage with a physical model of a problem then the environment can provide affordances that help the participant to solve problems. -
