  • I Am the Black Wizards: Multiplicity, Mysticism and Identity in Black Metal Music and Culture
I AM THE BLACK WIZARDS: MULTIPLICITY, MYSTICISM AND IDENTITY IN BLACK METAL MUSIC AND CULTURE Benjamin Hedge Olson A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Esther Clinton, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Marilyn Motz ii ABSTRACT Esther Clinton, Advisor Black metal represents one of the most dramatic, violent and obscure representations of contemporary international popular culture; it is an extremist sect of an extremist sect. An understanding of popular culture’s most extreme polarities is imperative to an understanding of its range and general character. I will argue that black metal culture is radically different from all other forms of metal and must be understood as a unique form of cultural expression that signifies a dramatic break from both traditional metal and secular modernism. Although black metal has proliferated across the world, taking up certain indigenous variations in its various locations, it has retained three basic characteristics that make it exceptional and significant: 1.) Black Metal is characterized by a conflict between radical individualism and group identity and by an attempt to accept both polarities simultaneously. 2.) Black metal is centered on an extravagantly romantic view of nature and an idealized past, both of these concepts being very much intertwined. 3.) Black metal celebrates the irrational and primal; it is a critique of modern rationalism and secularism. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page INTRODUCTION. • Louder Than Hell:The Definitive Oral History of Heavy Metal
RITCHIE BLACKMORE, OZZY OSBOURNE, KIRK HAMMETT, KERRY KING AND A HOST OF OTHER MUSIC GIANTS TRACE THE HISTORY OF METAL IN THE HEFTY NEW TOME LOUDER THAN HELL: THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF HEAVY METAL. GUITAR WORLD • JUNE EW BOOKS ABOUT hard rock and heavy metal have been as anxiously anticipated as Louder Than Hell: The Defini- tive Oral History of Metal, a colossal new collection of inter- views with hundreds of the genre’s key figures that success- fully traces the entire history of hard music, from its mid- Sixties British infancy through the rise of hair metal, thrash and black metal, all the way to the modern metalcore era. Written over a period of years by rock journalists Jon Wie- derhorn and Katherine Turman, the 700-plus-page Louder Than Hell finally sees the light of day on May 14 via !t/HarperCollins. In this exclusive excerpt, we present a selection of passages from this wildly entertaining, informative and comprehensive tome. KICK OUT THE JAMS: PROTO METAL, 1964–1970 Heavy metal was never officially “born.” It came together in bits and pieces between the mid Sixties and early Seventies, and stemmed from a desire to rebel, shock and create a level of intensity that did not then exist in pop music. WAYNE KRAMER (MC5) Je Beck was one of the pillars of pushing the guitar tone. And then there was Townshend, Hendrix, Jimmy Page and what I was trying to do with the MC5. We were all trying to push the guitar, so we didn’t just play the guitar; we played the ampli er as well.

  • Black Metal Excerpt
IF MAYHEM VOCALIST Pelle “Dead” Ohlin had been influential in life, then so was he in death, and many active participants have commented that his premature death provided a turning point for the Norwegian scene, which from then on moved toward even greater extremity. Black metal was now becoming a matter of life and death—or at least was being portrayed as such by Euronymous. Far from grieving, Euronymous appeared to be actively capitalizing on Dead’s death, something that disgusted Necrobutcher, the only member who traveled to Sweden for the funeral. Infamously, Euronymous considered eating parts of Dead’s brain, but claimed that he changed his mind due to its condition. As he stated in The Sepulchral Voice zine, “I have never tried human flesh. We were going to try it when Dead died but he had been lying a little too long.” Instead he and Hellhammer fashioned fragments ofv Dead’s skull into necklaces, with further pieces sent to other friends and contacts of the band, including Morgan of Marduk and Christophe “Masmiseim” Mermod of Samael. More controversially, the pair developed the images of Dead’s body that had been taken by Euronymous, who openly planned to use these for Mayhem artwork. “I must add that it was interesting to be able to study (half) a human brain and rigor mortis,” he explained in one letter. “The pictures will be used on the Mayhem album.” “I think the way people took it was absolutely wrong,” recalls Metalion. “No one re- ally had an idea what was going on, so it was hard for people to deal with this in a proper way.

The examination will be conducted in English. Abstract Thompson, C. 2018. Norges Våpen. Cultural Memory and Uses of History in Norwegian Black Metal. Studia Historica Upsaliensia 263. 221 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-513-0505-9. This dissertation examines uses of history and expressions of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. Formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Norwegian black metal seemed at odds with many of the stereotypes of Norway. The genre is an extreme style of heavy metal music that has been associated with burning churches, desecrating graves, and committing murders. Yet, Norway is often perceived as wealthy with sublime natural beauty and high levels of equality. Since the late 1990s, Norwegian black metal has increasingly received positive recognition and support from Norwegian government agencies and cultural institutions who have deemed this style of music a cultural product of Norway. In exploring the relationship between Norwegian black metal and Norway, two primary questions are asked: what makes Norwegian black metal ‘Norwegian’ and what are its influences? To answer these questions, a theoretical approach based on Astrid Erll’s cultural memory complex is used.
