Thank you. ix “This page left intentionally blank.” 0306818066-Mudrian_01:Layout 1 5/4/09 1:28 PM Page xi INTRODUCTION “What’s gonna be the next Hall of Fame album?” As Decibel ’s Editor in Chief, that’s the question I’m asked more than any other by our readers. “What the fuck were you thinking running a cover story on Trivium?” is probably the second-most-asked (though it’s clearly the most often posed by Jeff Walker of Carcass). I conceived the Hall of Fame as a nice excuse for us to revisit our favorite records in the magazine. I’m a pretty nostalgic guy (um, I actually collect CD long-boxes) and still regularly spin dozens of LPs that I worshipped in high school. So, the success of the Hall of Fame series suggests that there are actu- ally plenty more dorks just like me who can’t really “grow out” of certain albums. If you don’t already know the dB HOF deal, it goes a little something like this: Take a classic extreme metal record (as determined by our staff) released at least five years ago, track down and interview every band member who played on it, and present them questions exclusively about the writing, recording, touring and overall impact of said album. Sounds easy enough, right? I even often wondered why other publications never pursued similar features until I discovered first- hand what a complete bitch it is to assemble every month. Whether it’s track- ing down old, long-forgotten-about metal bones or convincing bands to talk at length about past records universally considered more relevant than their current release, it’s always a unique challenge to make every Hall of Fame installment a reality. In fact, I could write another book about all of the HOFs that didn’t happen. For starters, there’s the piece on Faith No More’s Angel Dust, where we con- vinced everyone except pumpkin-farming former guitarist Jim Martin to par- ticipate. Or the story on Helmet’s Meantime record—a perpetual source of discontent for dB Managing Editor Andrew Bonazelli—that was scrapped after it was revealed that ex-drummer John Stanier made some midnight blood pact with guitarist Peter Mengede and bassist Henry Bogdan to never speak of their xi 0306818066-Mudrian_01:Layout 1 5/4/09 1:28 PM Page xii time in Helmet again. Henry Rollins won’t do a Black Flag one (but Greg Ginn is totally available!). Neurosis have refused to partake in HOF stories for Souls at Zero, Enemy of the Sun, Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace (but they’re always really nice about it when they shoot us down).

Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Quasi aus dem Nichts erschien „The Sciences“, das aus dem sagenumwobenen Stoner-Doom-Legenden ganz aktuelle machte. Die Präzision der Rhythmen, die träge Schwere der Langsamkeit, die Virtuosität der zwischendurch aufscheinenden Gitarren-Soli: Mit einem lauten, krachenden Donnerschlag überbrückten die Kalifornier die 15 Jahre, die seit dem Erscheinen ihrer letzten Platte „Dopesmoker“ vergangen waren. 1990 von drei musikalisch frühreifen Teenagern gegründet aus den Resten der Hardcore-Band Asbestosdeath, machten sich Sänger und Bassist Al Cisneros, Schlagzeuger Chris Hakius und Gitarrist Matt Pike auf, Doom zu revolutionieren. Mit tiefer gestimmten Instrumenten, die über ausschließlich über Röhrenverstärker zu laufen hatten, und einer ebenso tiefer gelegten und verlangsamten Vision von Lärm nahmen sie dieses 63-minütige Doom-Metal-Stoner-Riffrock-Erdbeben-Monster auf – und lösten sich 1998 wegen interner und externer Streitigkeiten um genau dieses Album wieder auf. Doch jetzt sind Sleep wieder da, und die Band aus Oakland kann nicht nur durch die enorme Qualität ihrer Studioarbeit überzeugen. Vor allem live muss man Sleep unbedingt erlebt haben. Das bewiesen die Auftritte im vergangenen Jahr, bei denen das Trio eine dermaßen perfekte, wahrhaft massive, aber auch komplexe und dynamische Klangumgebung geschaffen haben, dass man seinen Ohren kaum traute und damit sich und das Publikum in eine enorm laute Trance spielte. Jetzt haben Sleep bestätigt, dass sie im Oktober für eine exklusive Show nach Karlsruhe kommen.

Juli 2019 | Stuttgart-Wangen, LKA/Longhorn Gäste: Traitor Der Name CANNIBAL CORPSE weckt viele Assoziationen, aber nur ein Wort trifft zu ihrer Beschreibung den Nagel auf den Kopf: unaufhaltsam. Die Death-Metal-Veteranen veröffentlichen 2017 ihr monströses 14. Studioalbum „Red Before Black“. Damit wiederkäuen sie keineswegs Altbekanntes, sondern legen die Messlatte einmal mehr höher an als zuvor und stellen eindeutig klar, wer die Standards setzt, wenn es darum geht, zwingende Musik zu machen, die gleichzeitig brutal und komplex ist. Zudem treibt sich die Band immer wieder zu neuen Extremen an, um sicherzugehen, dass ihre jeweils neusten Songs aus ihrem bisherigen Katalog hervorragen. Auch dank der Produktion von Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Goatwhore) beweist ‘Red Before Black’, dass die Jungs keineswegs Altbekanntes wiederkäuen, sondern legen die Messlatte einmal mehr höher an als zuvor und stellen eindeutig klar, wer die Standards setzt, wenn es darum geht, zwingende Musik zu machen, die gleichzeitig brutal und komplex ist. Zudem hat sich die Band abermals angespornt, um sicherzugehen, dass die Scheibe aus ihrem bisherigen Katalog hervorsticht. "Im Laufe unserer Karriere versuchten wir immer, uns zu verbessern, sowohl in puncto Präzision beim Zusammenspielen, als auch auf produktionstechnischer Seite, ohne an Aggressivität einzubüßen. 'Red Before Black' setzt diese Tradition fort, ist aber vermutlich noch starker auf das Aggressive hin ausgerichtet. Präzise klingt das Album definitiv, zugleich aber auch so roh wie kaum etwas, das wir in jüngerer Zeit gemacht haben", findet Bassist Alex Webster. "wir haben uns ungeheuer angestrengt, um diese Songs auszuarbeiten, zu proben und auf das Niveau zu hieven, das uns vorschwebte, mehr noch als im Rahmen unserer letzten Alben", fügt Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz hinzu.

"Ci siamo sforzati di offrire anche quest'anno, un'edizione alta per l'offerta e la qualità- ci tiene a sottolinearlo il sindaco Fassino- anche in una fase di difficoltà economiche, che rende più arduo sostenere gli impegni". Parallelamente al cartellone principale, ci sarà una rassegna che è stata denominata "MiTo per Torino", che si prefigge di tornare all'idea originale di Giorgio Balmas (colui che nel 1978 inventò Settembre Musica), ovvero EcoGraffi quella di portare la musica in ogni quartiere, biblioteche, carceri, ospedali, teatri, per far conoscere la musica Spot classica a più persone possibili. Per far questo si è dovuto rinunciare ai concerti al Palaisozaki. Il concerto inaugurale si terrà il 5 settembre al Teatro Regio alle 21 e sarà un omaggio a Debussy a 150 anni dalla Shinystat nascita, con Daniele Gatti che dirigerà l'Orchestre National de France, per un programma che prevede "Prelude á l'apres-midi d'un faune", "Ibèria", "La mer" seguirà "La Valse" poema coreografico di Ravel.
