It has now been more than thirty-five years since the first commercial recordings of hip-hop. Hip-hop icons have now been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (2007), Run-D.M.C. (2009), Beastie Boys (2012), and Public Enemy (2013). Harvard and Cornell Universities have important and extensive hip-hop archives and hip-hop artists such as 9th Wonder and Afrika Bambaataa, respectively, are visiting professors for those institutions. 2Pac’s “Dear Mama,” Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet,DeLaSoul’s 3 Feet High and Rising, Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” and Grand- master Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message” have all been enshrined in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The Grove Dictionary of American Music now includes entries on “beat-making,” “A Tribe Called Quest,” “Dr. Dre,” “Ruthless Records,” and many other hip-hop artists and labels. It paved the way for the trading card game subculture and market that exists today. This thesis explores the implications of this subculture and the ways it can be thought of as an urban leisure subculture. This thesis also discusses Magic’s unique community, which has been instrumental in the game’s success over the last two decades. Magic’s community is created symbiotically, through official support by Wizards of the Coast, and the parent company Hasbro, as well as the usage and interaction by the fans and players. It is this interaction that creates a unique community for Magic, which leads to the game’s global popularity, including its tremendous growth since 2010. This thesis looks at trade publications, articles written about Magic, player responses collected through online surveys, and other works to create an extensive work on Magic and its community.
