Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. • The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh
The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh 57 DANCE TO THE MUSIC, Sly and the Family Stone Written and produced by Sly Stone Epic 10256 1968 Billboard: #8 I first heard "Dance to the Music" in a high school lunch line when a friend thrust a pocket-size transistor at my ear. "You won't believe this," he said. Who could've? Except for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," no great single has broken so many rules and reestablished them in its own image. Sly found a funky equivalent of the white rock artiness of the Who and the Yardbirds -- without losing a shred of R&B's danceability. The lyric simply describes what's happening in the song, starting from scratch and adding one instrument at a time to build up a powerhouse of psychedelic R&B, replete with call-and-response vocals, briefly interjected solos, interspersed cries of surprised glee, and a beat.that bulldozes everything in its path. It's all so joyous that it's easy to miss the "message" declared by horn players Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini: " All the squares go home!" "Dance to the Music" arrived at the instant when black and white pop achieved their greatest closeness and began to move apart again, after more than a decade of frequently harmonious intersection. Since then, from Kool and the Gang to Prince, Sly and "Dance to the Music" have never been far away, and as the nineties open, their influence on pop dance music is as strong as anyone's -- even James Brown's.

Photograph: Adam Campos More than ever, choreographers resort to recorded music, but for a new collaboration brewing at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, David Dorfman has scored a major coup. Prophets of Funk, which is set to the music of Sly and the Family Stone, will feature the band (minus the reclusive Sly Stone) in a free performance on August 11 at Damrosch Park Bandshell. Still, for the work, which explores the prophetic possibilities of music and dance, Dorfman brings it all back to Stone: Funk, for the choreographer, is about keeping hope alive. Is this a new version of something that you've been touring? It's definitely new, and we're calling it a premiere because it will be the first time that we dance with the band playing live. We're calling this a "concert edition." Not only is the band playing live, but at the end of the piece, they will play a halfhour set of their incredible hits that have not been featured in the dance.

Famed musician loses battle to cancer Posted by tbnBBM On 12/02/2015 Cynthia Robinson, a trumpeter and vocalist whose bold and brassy style made her a key member of Sly and the Family Stone, has died at age 71. Jerry Martini, her longtime friend and fellow horn player in the band, said Wednesday that he was among those with her when she died of cancer Nov. 23 at her sister's home in Carmichael, California. A Sacramento native, Robinson joined Sly Stone (the stage name for Sylvester Stewart) and four others in the late 1960s for what became one of the first bands to feature women and men and blacks and whites. Sly and the Family Stone's wide open, funky style helped change popular music and Robinson's trumpet playing and singing was hard to miss on such hits as "Everyday People," "Hot Fun in the Summertime" and "I Want To Take You Higher." After Sly and the Family Stone broke up in the mid-1970s, Robinson toured with Prince, played with former Sly bassist Larry Graham's Grand Central Station and, until recently, toured with Martini as part of The Family Stone, which continues to perform. Sly and the Family Stone was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Robinson was a widely respected trumpeter and one of the first black female trumpet players to play in a major group. Martini told the AP that Robinson "didn't consider herself a great soloist, but she was." He also says while she didn't do a lot of long trumpet solos to show off her skills, "every note she played meant something." As a vocalist, too, Robinson emphasized feeling over technique and was as likely to shout her lines as sing them.
