  • On Two Previously Undescribed Subspecies of Lycaenidae (Lepidoptera) from Greece
46 ENTOMOLOGISCHE BERICHTEN, DEEL 36, 1.III. 1976 On two previously undescribed subspecies of Lycaenidae (Lepidoptera) from Greece by J. BROWN ABSTRACT Two new subspecies of Plebejus pylaon Fischer and Agrodiaetus ripartii Freyer are described from Greece. Their occurrence in Greece is described as far as possible. The following presents the descriptions of two poorly known subspecies of Lycaenids which fly in Greece. The distribution of both subspecies seems to follow well established zoogeograph- ical patterns: for example, the distribution of Plebejus pylaon brethertoni which is given below closely resembles the known distribution of Colias aurorina heldreichi Staudinger. Plebejus pylaon brethertoni ssp. nov. DESCRIPTION Male. Upperside with a deep violet blue ground colour; marginal black borders narrow (a- bout 0.5 mm wide) and extend 2—3 mm basad along veins. Usually, 2—3 black antemarginal spots at anal angle of hindwing. Length of forewing 15.5—17.5 mm. Underside with a pale grey ground colour, almost steely grey. Submarginal markings as in P. pylaon trappi Verity and usual¬ ly, a well marked white shade between the postdiscal spots and orange lunules, especially on the hindwing. Female. Upperside ground colour dark brown; marginal black borders linears or vestigeal. Hindwing with 3—6 orange submarginal lunules, each with a black antemarginal spot. 50% of females show 2—4 submarginal orange lunules on their forewing. Length of forewing 15—18 mm. Underside ground colour pale coffee brown, although sometimes darker. Orange submar¬ ginal lunules well developed on both wings. Otherwise as in male. Material examined. Holotype <3 (forewing length 16.5 mm), Mt.

In 1976 the second author together with Ing. Since some of the findings in the moth genus Zygaena F. (Zygaenidae, Lepidoptera) are of spe cial faunistic, ecological and phylogenetic interest a short account is given here. Collecting and observations took place in the following localities: 1) Dasht-e-Arjan, biotop 1, 2100 m (approximately 60 km west of Shiraz): A south exposed slope on the north-western border of Dasht-e-Arjan Natio nal Park. The biotope is characterised by small ravines, whose sides were scantly covered with bushes among which numerous M arrubium crassidens (Labiatae) were flowering. These were the main feeding and resting flowers for the Zygaena, as has also been stated by TREMEWAN (1975).

Petrov Zoological Institute National Academy of Science of Azerbaijan A. Abbaszade St. 1128, Baky, Azerbaijan, E-mail: [email protected] National Museum of Georgia Rustaveli Ave. 3, Tbilisi, Georgia, E-mail: [email protected] An annotated list of butterflies from Azerbaijan, containing 280 species, is presented. The classification and nomenclature in this work are accepted according to the key of Korb & Bolshakov (2016). The full list of species composition of butterflies of Azerbaijan numbering 280 species for today is presented for the first time, and it was supplemented by new materials collected by the first author from 2012 to 2019. We came up with the list of the total species composition of butterflies in Azerbaijan, which currently includes 280 species from 6 families (Hesperiidae - 37, Papilionidae - 10, Pieridae - 28, Lycaenidae - 100, Riodinidae - 1, Nimphalidae - 104) for today was compiled. We record Papilio demoleus demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 as a new species for the fauna of the Caucasus. Our results will help to continue biodiversity study and expand the information on the distribution of the butterflies (Papilionoformes) in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Key words: butterflies; Azerbaijan; catalogue; Lepidoptera Rhopalocera or butterflies are one of the popular groups of insects, which are an important component of terrestrial biocenoses. Langourov Abstract The paper represents results of entomological expedition carried out in the central and southern parts of Armenia in May and June 2018. It includes a list of 124 Lepidoptera species (Papilionoidea) recorded with comments on their distribution. Two species are reported for the first time for the country: Pieris mannii (Mayer, 1851) and Plebejus morgianus (Kirby, 1871). Three cases of suspected errors in label data of the material are reviewed. It is assumed that these errors are attributable to mislabelling of material collected elsewhere, and it is concluded that all that records be considered highly doubtful and preferably ignored altogether until independent confirmation. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea, distribution, new data, revised records, Armenia. Nuevos datos sobre los Lepidoptera de Armenia (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) Resumen El trabajo representa el resultado de la expedición entomológica realizada en la parte central y del sur de Armenia en mayo y junio de 2018.

  • High Altitude Papilionoidea (Lepidoptera) of Tsaghkunyatc Mountains in Armenia and Their Diversity Along the Altitudinal Gradient Noushig A
International Journal For Research In Applied And Natural Science ISSN: 2208-2085 High Altitude Papilionoidea (Lepidoptera) Of Tsaghkunyatc mountains In Armenia and their diversity along the altitudinal gradient Noushig A. Zarikian, Hasmik G. Khachatryan & Mark Yu. Kalashyan Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology, National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. P. Sevak Street 7, 0014, Yerevan, Armenia. Tel.: +374-77374784, Email: [email protected] Abstract This study tries to link the butterfly species diveristy along the altitudinal span of Tsaghkunyatc mountain in Armenia. Butterflies were collected from March to October 2015- 2017. A checklist of 129 species is given and their abundances/diversity was calculated for 10 altitudinal zones. This revealed that the relationship between the observed numbers and abundance of butterfly species and and altitude follows hump-shaped curve – i.e the highest diversity in the mid elevation. A significant relationship was recorded between the altitude and the species richness and abundance and the relation followed the usual hump-shaped curve. However, the diversity and evenness indexes did not follow the hump-shaped pattern, but yielded a semi-constant relation with altitude. This could be explained by the existence of several species that typicaly found only on the highest altitudes. These results could be applied for habitat management in general and especially for planning of Protected Areas in this region. Keywords: Abundance, Armenia, evenness, Diversity, Papilionoidea, Species richness. Introduction The mountain masses are initially characterized, with individual unique physical parameters that vary along altitudinal gradients inquired in isolation and combination. The responses of butterflies to these gradients, either directly or through their host plant, are discussed at the levels of the individual and sometimes population and community (Mani 1990).
