422 WacanaWacana Vol. Vol.18 No. 18 2No. (2017): 2 (2017) 422-454 Bangsawan prampoewan Enlightened Peranakan Chinese women from early twentieth century Java Didi Kwartanada ABSTRACT The end of the nineteenth century witnessed paradox among the Chinese in colonial Java. On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt by the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their children in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become “civilized subjects”, on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role played by “enlightened” Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girls known to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen), who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also performed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan’s enlightening achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation’s women’s movements. Faculty of Arts and Design of Bandung Institute of Technology, Bandung-Indonesia *E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The Kauman settlement in Yogyakarta is an urban village settlement that is almost three centuries old and located at the heart of the Yogyakarta business and tourism center. The settlement was founded in 1775 by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I as housing facility for the abdi dalem (palace employees) on religious affairs. The settlement has undergone many changes influenced by politics, power and globalization that eventually brought modernization to the settlement. Starting from 1912, the settlement began to be strongly influenced by Muhammadiyah organization. Even though the Kauman settlement is now an open community and no longer part of the palace bureaucracy, its people still practice the way of life based on Javanese cultural values supported by piety in practicing Islamic rules in daily life from generation to generation. The Kauman settlement today exist authentically as both a Muslim society and part of the Javanese traditional culture. This authenticity is visible in the settlement layout and the buildings within, which reflect a calm and cozy urban village settlement with its own characteristics amidst the business and tourism center of Yogyakarta. -

The researcher focused this research on the moral values contained in the novel Student Hidjo by Mas Marco Kartodikromo. Therefore, the theory used in this study is in the form of learning about values, morals, character, ethics, and character education. The method used in this research is descriptive method with a qualitative research form. The approach used is the sociology of literature approach. Data collection techniques using literature study and documentary studies.The results of the analysis in this study indicate that there are moral values in Student Hidjo's novel. These moral values are moral values known from the relationship between humans and God (believe in God and perform obligations to God). The value of morality is known from the relationship between humans and oneself (responsible, honest, fearful, confident, self- existent, and simplicity). The value of morality is understood from the relationship between humans and fellow humans (mutual love, help, respect, and togetherness). The results of this study can be implemented in Indonesian vocational high school learning in class XII odd metters. -

This philosophical concept underlies almost all the Javanese spatial design at all scales of architecture. Being influenced by a complex cultural changes, Kauman settlement has emerged as a distinct entity in many major traditional cities of Java, including in Yogyakarta and Semarang. In this case, Kauman becomes a symbol, not only of the philosophy of Java, but also of Islam to which the local society orient their faith and rites. The research emphasizes the importance of conserving Kauman settlement as a constituent element defining the identity of Yogyakarta and Semarang City, especially in facing the recent challenge resulted from globalization phenomenon. The research has two goals which are to re-conceptualize each Kauman’s urban structure in regards with Javanese philosophy and Islamic ideology and to redefine the current characteristics of each Kauman settlement. The methodology impemented on this research is phenomenology by adopting an ethnographic approach that depends on the researcher’s interpretation upon Kauman’s urban structure based on philosophy and cultural perspective. However, not all members of Sedulur Sikep participate in or even approve of this movement. This anthropological study attempts to illustrate how this situation has pushed the Sikep community mem- bers to (re)recognize their values, the influence of these values on environmental discourse, and how the relations between them are understood and practiced by Sedulur Sikep and the movement fighting in its name. By examining the adaptability of ecological knowledge and the ordering of visible space as a result of complex interactions between nature and nurture, it is possible to examine the shifts in their understand- ing of environmental dynamics and their cultural identity. The ‘fragmentation’ that has occurred is rooted in different understandings of the reciprocal bonds between the Sedulur Sikep’s tani mligi identity and natural resources. -

Tungka 1Department of Architecture, 2Department of English, Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia 3Department of Architecture, Sam Ratulangi University, Semarang, Indonesia Abstract: Problem statement: During the last fifty years, there have been significant changes on the perspectives of space. Space definition not only involves physical features but also deals with social capital for human development. Regarding this matter, the research puts the perspective of space as a subject or as a work of art that needs better comprehension rather than considering it as merely an object or fact. Kampung Kauman is a traditional Moslem village located around the Grand Mosque in some cities of Java. In the city of Semarang, Kauman area is an expression of human culture built up over times and experiences for three centuries. Approach : The study applies investigative-method on the transcendental aspects of space by using ethnography-architecture. The classification of ethnography-architecture concentrates on single case. The method applies approaches on culture and design and also participant observation as research tools which will be concluded with open themes. Results : After observing Kauman Pompa Semarang, the research discovers local concepts of ‘the charity space’ and ‘the social intensive space’. Conclusion : The research is a unique knowledge for architecture since the approach on culture reveals the role of Islamic culture in establishing kampung Kauman (Kauman village). Ethnography-architecture is applicable to other researches in investigating the original space concept. -

STUDENT HIJO Student Hidjo Oleh Marco Kartodikromo (1918) Diambil dari : militanindonesia.org Student Hijo karya Marco Kartodikromo, terbit pertama kali tahun 1918 melalui Harian Sinar Hindia, dan muncul sebagai buku tahun 1919. Merupakan salah satu perintis lahirnya sastra perlawanan, sebuah fenomena dalam sastra Indonesia sebelum perang. Novel ini mencoba berkisah tentang awal mula kelahiran para intelektual pribumi, yang lahir dari kalangan borjuis kecil, dan secara berani mengkontraskan kehidupan di Belanda dan Hindia Belanda. I. KONINGKLIJKE SCHOUWBURG DI ‘SRAVENHAGE [DEN HAAG] Sudah dua bulan lamanya Hidjo tinggal di Negeri Belanda dan menjadi pelajar di Delf. Selama itu pula Hidjo belum merasa kerasan tinggal di Nederland karena pikiran dan sikap Hidjo tidak sebagaimana anak muda kebanyakan. Yaitu suka melihat aneka pertunjukan yang bagus-bagus dan bermain-main dengan perempuan yang pertama kali Hidjo masuk di Koninklijke Schouwburg bersama dengan famili direktur yang ditumpangi rumahnya untuk melihat opera Faust. Sebuah pertunjukan yang sangat digemari oleh orang-orang Belanda. Dalam Faust itu, terdapat cerita dari seorang yang sangat gemar belajar mencari ilmu, sampai dia (Faust) itu tidak lagi mempunyai waktu untuk merasakan kesenangan dunia. Faust seorang yang berharta, tetapi dia tidak senang memelihara perempuan sebagaimana dilakukan orang kebanyakan. Juga plesiran dan lain-lainnya, dia tidak suka. Jadi Faust itu telah merasa bisa hidup dengan senang dengan beberapa ratus buku yang disukainya. Sejak ia masih muda sampai rambut Faust itu berganti warna putih, dia tidak pernah buang-buang waktu barang satu jam pun selain untuk belajar. Sudah barang tentu, semakin lama dia bertambah besar kekayaan. Begitu juga Faust selalu memikirkan hari kematiannya yang musti datang. -

Ratna Endang Widuatie Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Jember Pos-el: [email protected] Abstrak Artikel ini mendiskusikan konflik politik dalam pergerakan Sarekat Islam 1926. Fokus kajian adalah bagaimana terjadinya konflik politik dalam pergerakan Sarekat Islam, faktor yang melatarbelakangi, dan dampaknya. Hasill kajian menunjukkan bahwa konflik disebabkan perbedaan ideologi perjuangan antara kelompok Semaun dengan kelompok Cokroaminoto. Kelompok Semaun membawa ideologi komunis yang kemudian dikenal dengan sebutan SI Merah dan mengambil jalan noncooperative, sedangkan kelompok Cokroaminoto dengan nama SI Putih dan memilih strategi cooperatif dengan pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Konflik ini menimbulkan perpecahan dalam tubuh organisasi Sarekat Islam dan akhirnya kelompok SI Merah memisahkan diri dan bergabung dengan Partai Komunis Hindia. Sementara itu, tokoh-tokoh SI Putih, antara lain Cokroaminoto mengumumkan kebijakan partai dengan melarang seseorang memasuki organisasi politik lebih dari satu. The focus of research is how did the political conflict in the movement of the SI occur, what factors were behind the conflict, and what impact did it bring. This study revealed that the conflict was caused by ideological differences between Semaun group and Tjokroaminoto group. The Semaun group promoted a communist ideology which was later known as the Red Sarekat Islam and took a non-cooperative path, while the Tjokroaminoto group or White SI chose a cooperative strategy with the Dutch government. -

From Foe to Partner to Foe Again: The Strange Alliance of the Dutch Authorities and Digoel Exiles in Australia, 1943-1945 Harry A. Poeze The Netherlands East Indies, the vast Dutch colony, was invaded by the Japanese and occupied with relative ease. The Indies government surrendered on March 8,1942. In the days leading up to the surrender, on orders of the Dutch Governor General, a number of government officials left for Australia. The Dutch government in exile in London—Germany occupied the Netherlands from May 1940—authorized the formation of an Indies government in exile in Australia, named the Netherlands Indies Commission. The commission was inaugurated on April 8, 1942, and was headed by H. J. van Mook. Starting in April 1944, the Raad van Departementshoofden (Commission of Departmental Heads) acted as Van Mook's cabinet. It consisted of six members, with Loekman Djajadiningrat as the sole Indonesian among them. Matters regarding the Dutch and Indonesians in Australia were supervised by Ch. O. van der Plas, who held the rank of Chief Commissioner for Australia and New Zealand and who was undoubtedly the most influential member of the Raad. The Indonesians stranded in Australia beginning in March 1942—mostly seamen and soldiers—cost Van der Plas a lot of time and caused him much worry.
