SOME GREAT ADVICE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING! Networking Advice for Law Students Part V: The Harder You Work, The Luckier You'll Be

• Network with people you genuinely enjoy and in activities you find interesting. • Take advantage of existing networks around you: in your legal market, from your alumnae associations, through affinity groups, and in your bar association's work. • Don't waste opportunities to make new connections: follow-up for real, by email, by phone, on business cards, and after social and professional events. • Earn your network's support by being a resource to those within it.

Not surprisingly, this all takes a lot of work and attention. But it does pay dividends. And it gets easier, just like anything, with practice.

In my household growing up there was an expression I liked: a person makes her own luck. Recently I heard an attorney offer a similar sentiment: the harder you work, the luckier you'll be. This is true in so many aspects of the profession, but it's certainly the key to a successful professional network.

Do yourself a favor and set aside a regular period of time each day, week, or month to check in on your networks and work on maintaining and developing connections. It doesn't have to take time away from other work. Have following-up on business cards from a reception earlier in the week be the thing you do in lieu of surfing the web in between focusing on an outline or paper. Make a date with a potential mentor to have coffee near their office - but don't waste time going there and back and breaking up your day, just study at that cafe all afternoon.

Alright everyone, that's it. Get out there and start schmoozing!

Uniform Bar Exam Drawing Closer to Reality - Next year, at least 10 states are expected to switch to the so-called Uniform Bar Exam, and 22 other jurisdictions are positioned to adopt the test in the next few years. The test, developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners, will allow law school graduates to transport their bar scores across state lines without re-taking exams. And backers say a uniform exam will improve the quality of bar exams, particularly in states with small test-development budgets. The test still has big hurdles to overcome. Several of the biggest legal markets have yet to sign on: New York, California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois and Texas so far have taken a pass. Some worry the test will give short shrift to important state law concepts. Others have scheduling problems and scoring concerns. And the test puts a great deal of power in the hands of the NCBE, which gives some state-level bar officials pause. Even so, the fact that several states have accepted one test may mean a major shift for the profession. Individual states have doggedly clung to their autonomy in testing lawyers, and this would mean giving up that power. "Roughly 10" states have indicated that they will give the uniform test by 2011, said Erica Moeser, president of the NCBE, though she wouldn't provide specifics on which states will actually sign on. However, officials in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri have said they are considering the

test. Next month, representatives from the states that will be among the first adopting the test will gather in Phoenix to discuss late-stage details of implementing the exam. Click here to read the rest of the article at Law.com.

Use Informational Interviews to Help Your Job Search - Despite their seemingly intangible benefits and the daunting task of approaching strangers for advice, informational interviews can be invaluable in a job search. For example, one student looking for career advice talked to five different attorneys in his practice area of interest. He initially planned to speak with only two, but each of them gave him additional names to contact. These advisers gave him tips on how to tailor his resume and cover letter specifically for jobs in this practice area. Furthermore, he was able to use the names of some of these contacts in his cover letters. Tailoring his application materials led to interviews, during which he was able to display a deeper knowledge of the field than most entry-level candidates. When it came time to negotiate his offer, he was armed with current information on the state of the market and salary standards. Think of informational interviews as a long-term investment, not one where you expect an immediate return. You are not meeting with Attorney X to ask if his firm has a job opening or if he knows of job openings elsewhere. You are meeting with Attorney X to ask specific questions about his practice, his career and career path, and steps you should be taking along your career path.
