Please take a moment to read through the introductory notes before jumping straight into the menu.

Even if you are a seasoned Moviola partner, please follow the booking instructions on the next page. This will help us to process your requests quickly and accurately.

The Spring Season starts on May 1st and ends on August 31st . A new menu for next season will be sent to you at the beginning of July.

Please do not book films for 1st September 2020 or after from this menu of films.

05

HOW TO BOOK YOUR FILMS

Send an email to [email protected] as soon as possible, and not later than 1st APRIL (for partners, to allow time for production of publicity materials) and 10th APRIL (for associates). Please send it as a separate email to this one and NOT by pressing reply

 If you are an associate, state if it is a GOLD or SILVER booking. If you are a partner, make sure you have booked your dates with Christina first, to ensure she can schedule a presenter for you.

 State your venue name.

 List the dates and films you would like for MAY, JUN, JUL, AUG. Give at least TWO spare films in case your first choices are not available (We will always consult you on any substitutions that mightbe necessary). IMPORTANT NOTES Confirmations

When you book your films from Moviola, we will send you a Confirmation Form on which the level of charge for each film is clearly set out. You should read this carefully before replying to Toby to state that it is correct. BUT please see the clause about minimum guarantees below.

The confirmation is our agreement to supply films for you for the season and we refer back to it in any case of a query on your invoice.

It is also your licence to show the film and your proof for anyone who requests it that you have booked the film properly, so be sure to read it and keep it safe.

Minimum Guarantees

If a film on the mainstream menu gets at least 10+ bookings across the Moviola network, we can generally offer it with no minimum guarantee attached. However, if it turns out that you are the only venue showing a particular film, then you will be subject to the distributor’s minimum of around £100 for film hire. If this were to be the case we would notify you of the change, and you would have the option to pick a different title.

Release Dates

While we always try to provide the most accurate release dates for titles on the Moviola Menu, these are open to change, often at very short notice. Due to this, we may have to ask you to change a title or reschedule a date. We will always give the maximum notice we can should a change be necessary. Children’s/Family Films

Attracting a sufficient audience to make such films viable is extremely difficult. Young people often want tosee films immediately on release and at the lowest possible cost. Furthermore, these films are only available to us to show once they are on sale to the public. On this menu, we have included the films ‘THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING’ and ’ THE CALL OF THE WILD’ which we think are suitable for a PG audience and has good appeal to families. Help Us Stamp Out Film Piracy

All films shown to the public have to pay a licence fee whether or not any ticket price is charged. As a Moviola venue, you operate commercial film shows in exactly the same way as your local multiplex or full- time cinema. You advertise shows and sell tickets, and the film distributors expect a proportion of your sales as film hire. If you find or hear of any venue near you which claims to be operating in a different way - for example advertising free shows or telling you that they get their films cheaper - we would like to know. It is in our interests to ensure that shows are properly licensed.

SUMMER MENU - 1st MAY—31st AUGUST 2020

Some big hitters kick us off in May, with the hugely popular 1917 now available, after a delay by the distributor, as well as the new adaptation of Little Women. Despite decidedly middling reviews, we also have the live-action version ofCats , a must on our menu given Judi Dench’s involvement and definitely a good choice if your audience likes musicals! For even the most casual of motoring fans, we have James Mangold’s Le Mans ‘66 (also known as Ford v Ferrari), detailing the famous endurance race of that year and the relationship between car designer Carol Shelby (Matt Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale). Stunningly filmed with two stellar performances from the leads, this is one to see on your local big screen! Later in the season, Tom Hanks returns with A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, looking at the life of beloved American television entertainer Fred Rogers. We also have Military Wives, about a group of women whose husbands are serving in Afghanistan, and who start a choir that gains a worldwide following. Starring Kristin Scott Thomas, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser in the vein of last year’s Fisherman’s Friends. Likewise, Love, Sarah stars Celia Imrie who joins two other women in starting a bakery in Notting Hill. We’ve included a couple of films,The Kid Who Would Be King and the new adaptation of Jack London’s Call Of The Wild starring Harrison Ford for those venues who are looking into programming for a younger audience and we are of course happy to discuss this with you. Don’t forget, we are still offering Cinematheque films until at least the end of 2020, and you will find many new and diverse titles to choose from on this menu. Included is the recent Korean Oscar- winner Parasite, a fascinating watch and sure to start conversation at your screenings! You’ll also find some other fantastic foreign language offerings, including the rather absurdist comedy Deerskin, starring The Artist’s Jean Dujardin We hope you enjoy choosing your films for this new season, and as always, if you have any queries or would like advice on suitable programming for your venue, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with one of our team at the end of this menu Best wishes for another successful season Toby

This film has universal appeal for teens and older audiences—the humour housing its more political messages.

“Greed’s antihero is known as “Rich" to his intimates and his surname earns him the moniker “greedy McCreadie.” It’s not subtle stuff but then, investigative jour- nalism, censure, documentary exposés, and empathy haven’t worked so far to cure our rapacious fast-fashion appetite – so why not a movie? “ NATHALIE ATKINSON

Through the ridiculous imaginary friend that Jojo has in Hitler, we soon find that he questions his blind faith in Nazism through some harsh lessons learnt in WWII. Often humourous, and brought back to life by poignancy, Jewish director Waititi is even-handed and emotional, running a thin line, with the same tongue-in-cheekiness of an episode of ‘Allo Allo’ or a Mel Brookes comedy.

“Jojo Rabbit works such tensions throughout: between laughter and groans, between emotion and sentimentality, between daring and bad taste. Such gambles are worth taking…” DONALD CLARK

Support this quirky take on the Arthurian legend and book this one for your adventurous younger audiences.

PROGRAMMING GUIDANCE: Estevez has been directing since the 1980’s—here challenging the notions of American society’s woes as his players converge in a public library. A tough and revealing film of bristling ideologies reaching boiling point.

“Jeffrey Wright plays the world-weary library director trying to keep the peace and hold on to some semblance of the institution’s core mission — a fact delivering, education supplementing bastion of learning, civic responsibility and civility. That’s one thing The Public absolutely nails.”

A fantastic benefit of being part of Moviola’s network is that you can currently programme a special selection of exclusive, independent, leftfield and documentary titles - thanks in part to the support of the British Film Institute (BFI). Our cinematheque menu covers a range of diverse subjects which we think could strike the right tone for your audiences as part of a mix of popular titles from our mainstream selection. (As ardent film fans, we are very passionate about these!) We advise that these films should supplement the better known titles as part of your season. Normally, a Cinematheque Film carries a minimum guarantee of at least £100 (which you would pay) or 35% of your box office, whichever greater.

However, we very pleased to announce that thanks to BFI sponsorship, any title booked from the Cinematheque menu will receive a discount of £50 off the net film hire, allowing you to try some more adventurous film choices without as great a risk of losing money on them. What a great opportunity! Why not pick one of these brilliant films as part of your upcoming season?

OFFICIAL TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm32fP0XHtc

BBFC GUIDANCE: https://bbfc.co.uk/releases/portrait-lady-fire-2019

PROGRAMMING GUIDANCE: An arresting and painterly look at women in love—not often portrayed in such an authentic light. Sciamma’s previous work champions parts of the LGBTQ community in France, and this historic take is nothing less than bravura filmmaking that will have appeal to adults, teens and painters(!) alike. Its stars are already exceptionally popular with younger audiences and Haenel’s recent walk-out of the French Oscars (the Césars) has cemented her status.

“ There’s almost no single moment in Portrait of a Lady on Fire that couldn’t be captured, mounted, and hung on a wall as high art. That’s how visually ravish- ing it is to experience “

LEAH GREENBLATT

OFFICIAL TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa3cSLIYcoM

PROGRAMMING GUIDANCE: Kristin Stewart is no stranger to challenging roles since the vampire fangs of her Twilight years behind. Jean Seberg’s story is exciting and boundary-breaking and Stewart’s no-nonsense approach is the perfect fit for this ambitious and captivating life that traversed the Atlantic.

“Seberg somehow manages to pull off a tricky combination of radical politics, inter-racial sex and Hollywood tragedy while styling Stewart in Chanel. It’s quite a balancing act, but this is a film in which the story is just about strong enough to pull that heavy cart along. “

MILLER— SNACKMAG.CO.UK THE LIGHTHOUSE (2020) AVAILABLE: 1st June TBC (SURREAL DRAMA) Director: Robert Eggers Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity With Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson whilst living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Runtime: 109 mins LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

OFFICIAL TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogp0znSUWAM

BBFC GUIDANCE: https://bbfc.co.uk/releases/lighthouse-2019

PROGRAMMING GUIDANCE: The synopsis is deliberately short—The Lighthouse is a film best experienced rather than explained. Its power of transporting you into its close confines and the descent into delirium is uncomfortable and realistic. The twin leads by Pattinson and Dafoe are a masterclass in acting, as is the direction by Robert Eggers ofThe Witch (2016) fame.

“Everything about The Lighthouse lands with a crash. It’s cinema to make your head and soul ring.”

OFFICIAL TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ofaqnAj33g

BBFC GUIDANCE: https://bbfc.co.uk/releases/street-2019

PROGRAMMING GUIDANCE: Down-to-earth exploration of the sense of community in the urban jungle. This remarkable film, captured over four years, sees politics, business and people change the world around us. A compelling documentary that feels uncomfortably close to home and gives pause for thought.

“ An intimate and original exploration of an oft-neglected topic.“

MARIA NAE

Moviola.org @MoviolaUK 01935 872607 #CommunityCinema 23 IMPORTANT A NOTE ON RELEASE DATES

We endeavour to ensure our release dates are as accurate as possible—working on the 16 week window after a film has hit cinemas, or pre home-release copies of films through our industry contacts. We have indicated on the release schedule ‘TBC’ - where we have been notified of a film’s availability for Moviola audiences, but cannot absolutely guarantee a film. This is why we ask for back-up options. The reasons for withholding a film from release, or shifting the date, could be down to several issues, and more often than not, we are at the behest of the distributor of that film. We will, of course, try our very best to obtain a film by its estimated date for your audiences—but please bear in mind—that on the rare occasion, this is not always possible.

WHAT IS GOLD SERVICE?

Any venue can flip between GOLD and SILVER service for specific films by request. Gold service is where we send a film disc to you in addition to your support disc. We then require the disc to be posted back to us using a pre-paid envelope. You are charged a nominal fee for the postage and disc service. Gold service members benefit from pre-home release films that are unobtainable from retailers, but must be sent back to Moviola via recorded delivery. WHAT IS SILVER SERVICE?

Silver service customers purchase their own films. We will send a shorts disc to you with a trailer for your next film, unless you have indicated otherwise. If a film is not available for purchase, then we can provide a disc under the ‘Gold’ service by recorded delivery for that particular screening.

PROGRAMMING FOR UNDER 30’s & OTHER UNDER REPRESENTED GROUPS

Here at Moviola, we are constantly aware that younger audiences are underrepresented at community cinema screenings. We would like to encourage the next generation of cinemagoers to enjoy films in their own community. Films in this season have been picked to satisfy both traditional audiences who prefer an ‘uplifting’ narrative, with a clear beginning, middle and end. However, we are also starkly aware of ever-changing audiences and shifts in societal norms. This is why many of our films are consciously chosen to reflect the intersectional nature of British society—including subjects of disability, race, gender, sexuality and female-led films. There are many films in this season’s programmes which serve to stir debate and conversation and we welcome this and, will consistently strive to include the best quality films from around the world that speak to the widest possible audiences.

If you would like to programme for a particular audience, advice on your film programme or would like some 1-2-1 advice about marketing your shows—our communication & diversity officer, Neil, is always at hand to give you support. He also enjoys a good natter. Details are on the final page.
