Peep Behind the Curtain – the Impact of Pornography
Peep Behind the Curtain – the Impact of Pornography What is the scope of the issue? Research of popular pornography films found that 88% of the scenes- not just the movies, but the scenes in these movies- there was verbal and physical aggression, usually toward a woman. The more interesting finding is that 95% of the time when someone is violent with another person in porn, usually a man toward a woman, the recipient is shown as either liking that violence or having no objection. Ana J. Bridges, “Pornography’s Effects on Interpersonal Relationships,” in The Social Costs of Pornography, eds. James R. stoner and Donna M. Hughes (Princeton, NJ: Witherspoon Institute, 2010), doi: 10.1177/1077801210382866 Researchers coded 269 mainstream videos that were uploaded to PornHub between 2008 and 2016. PornHub was chosen because it is one of the world’s top adult websites and the 36th most visited site on the internet in 2017, with more than 81 million daily visits. Pornhub reports that in 2016, people watched 4.6 billion hours of pornography on its site alone; 61% of visits occurred via smartphone. In 2017 alone, Pornhub got 28.5 billion visits. That’s almost 1,000 visits a second, or 78.1 million a day—way more than the population of the entire United Kingdom. That number has since jumped to 33.5 billion site visits in 2018. Pornhub, “Pornhub’s 2016 Year in Review,” (2016). Eleven pornography sites are among the world’s top 300 most popular Internet sites. The most popular such site “xvideo”, at number 18, outranks the likes of eBay, MSN, and Netflix. -

Matt, who is fascinated by Antarctica, is visiting the white continent and recalling his love affair with Lisa. In voice-over, he compares being in Antarctica to being ‘two people in a bed - claustrophobia and agoraphobia in the same place’. Images of ice and the never-ending Antarctic landscape are effectively cut in to shots of the crowded concerts. -

What Killed Australian Cinema & Why is the Bloody Corpse Still Moving? A Thesis Submitted By Jacob Zvi for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Health, Arts & Design, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne © Jacob Zvi 2019 Swinburne University of Technology All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal. Friction I debates Australian cinema vs. Australian audience, rejecting Australian cinema’s output, resulting in Frictions II and III, which respectively debate two industry questions: what content is produced? arthouse vs. -

For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion – bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street – but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicized and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. A satire on the grotesque inequality of wealth in the fashion industry, the film sees McCreadie’s rise and fall through the eyes of his biographer, Nick (David Mitchell). Box Vol2-5.Pdf
Editors’ Note Dearest Readers, Let’s face it: most of us hate to work. Some people say it’s their job they hate, but by its very nature work is a total bummer. Occasionally work can be rewarding, like a doctor saving a patient, an artist completing a project or even a football player making a touchdown. However, most people don’t have such defining moments of work-related glory. Hell, most people are just happy to get a five-cent raise. And that’s why Box is bringing you a more titillating look at “Work.” Not all jobs blow, and some work is even great. Christopher A. Trout looks at the history of the Athletic Model Guild and its founder, Bob Mizer, in “The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of AMG.” Heather Riley gave Dian Hanson, former Juggs editor, a call to discuss her new job as Taschen Publishing’s “Sexy Book Editor,” Hugh Hefner and the state of porn today. Lady Sovereign took a break from her hectic tour to talk to Ryan McManus about Pernod, her first stage name and pushing donuts. Wiley Wiggins gives advice on how to turn sex from work into play again and Miranda Brown mixes business and pleasure in “Kinda Big in Japan.” In “Man’s Best Friend” Deuce La Cock follows San Francisco’s real-life dog boy through a day of fucking and playing. Leo Zacharias tells us how to “Work It” in his spread of dancing nudes. Dutch Redd looks back on some of porn’s finest moments in “The Masters.” If that is not enough open us up visual stimulation, keep an eye out for Box’s first Vanitisement. -
The Cinema of Michael Winterbottom, Deborah Allison (2013) Plymouth: Lexington, 224 Pp., ISBN: 798-0-7391-2583-0 (Pbk)
The Cinema of Michael Winterbottom, Deborah Allison (2013) Plymouth: Lexington, 224 pp., ISBN: 798-0-7391-2583-0 (pbk) About half-way through The Cinema of Michael Winterbottom, Deborah Allison cites Annette Kuhn’s observation that it is both more interesting and more important to discuss what film genres do than what they are (116). As part of the Genre Film Auteurs series, one of the principle objectives of Allison’s book is to investigate what it is that genre does in the work of Michael Winterbottom, one of the most extraordinarily prolific and controversial of contemporary British filmmakers. Thus, in each of the book’s eight chapters, Allison sets out to use genre as a ‘as a critical tool’ (x), focusing her attention on one of the director’s films and the variety of ways in which its dominant genre identity is constructed, inflected and, more often than not, inverted. In this way, despite a focus that is narrower than some auteur studies, Allison successfully unearths a variety of themes and characteristics that run throughout Winterbottom’s eclectic oeuvre. After a brief introduction setting out these objectives and their parameters, the first chapter begins with an investigation of Butterly Kiss (1995) and its relationship to the road movie. This is the earliest film discussed in the fifteen years of Winterbottom’s output covered in the book, and Allison’s discussion of it provides a useful foundation for the other chapters. Indeed, each chapter follows a broadly similar framework, beginning with a short plot synopsis before exploring each film in relation to its respective genre/s, discussing the ways in which the films draw on and challenge established genre codes and convention. -
Introduction
Introduction Pornography is a social toxin that destroys relationships, steals innocence, erodes compas- sion, breeds violence, and kills love. The issue of pornography is ground zero for all those concerned for the sexual health of our loved ones, communities, and society as a whole. As the following points illustrate, the breadth and depth of pornography’s influence on popu- lar culture has created an intolerable situation that impinges on the freedoms and wellbe- ing of countless individuals. Young Age of First Exposure: A study of university students found that 93% of boys and 62% of girls had seen Internet pornography during adolescence. The re- searchers reported that the degree of exposure to paraphilic and deviant sexual ac- tivity before age 18 was of “particular concern.”1 Another sample has shown that among college males, nearly 49% first encountered pornography before age 13.2 A study in Australia of 941 15–29 year olds, reported the median age for first view- ing pornography was 13 years for males and 16 years for females. This same study reported that 100% of males and 82% of females reported they had ever viewed pornography. Among those who had viewed pornography within the last 12 months prior to the survey, 84% of males and 19% of females used pornography on a weekly or daily basis.3 Australian reports from the early to mid-2000s showed that the rates of lifetime exposure to pornography had been 73–93% for adolescent boys and 11– 62% for adolescent girls.4 1Chiara Sabina, Janis Wolak, and David Finkelhor, “The Nature and Dynamics of Internet Pornography Expo- sure for Youth,” CyberPsychology & Behavior 11, no. -
