THO 3347 (H 2015) – Glossary of Terms Akathist Literally, “not standing.” A hymn dedicated to our Lord, the Theotokos, a saint, or a holy event. Aposticha The stichera sung with psalm verses at the end of Vespers and Matins. These differ from the stichera at Psalm 140 (Vespers) and at the Praise Psalms (Matins), which are sung with fixed psalms, in that the psalm verses used (pripivs) vary with the day or feast, and do not end the singing of the whole psalm. See also stichery na stichovnych. Archieratikon Тhе book containing texts and rubrics for the solemn Hierarchical (a.k.a. Pontifical) Divine Liturgy. The Archieratikon also contains the sacrament of Ноlу Orders and special blessings and consecrations. Canon A system of nine odes (the Second Ode is sung only during Great Lent) sung at Matins after Psalm 50 and before the Praises. Each ode is connected traditionally with a scriptural canticle (see below for the nine scriptural canticles) and consists of an Irmos, a variable number of troparia and, on feasts, a katavasia. After the Third Ode a sidalen is usually sung, and after the Sixth Ode a kontakion and ikos, and after the Ninth Ode, the Svitelen is sung. The Canon has its own system of eight tones. Domatikon A theotokion sung after “Now…” (or “Glory… Now…”) at the end of Psalms 140, 141, 129, and 116 at Vespers on Friday and Saturday evenings, and on the eve of a Polyeleos saint or saints with a vigil in the same tone as the last sticheron of the saint (at “Glory…”). -

Meawad Liturgy as Ethicizer: Cultivating Ecological Consciousness through a Coptic Orthodox Liturgical Ethos 1 – Introduction Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s recent expression of its ecological concern has been vast and strong, evidenced by its designation of September 1st as a day of prayer for the “protection of the environment” and also through the scholarly contributions of more than a dozen theologians and religious figures, including Patriarch Bartholomew, Elizabeth Theokritoff, and John Chryssavgis.1 Much of this witness can and does extend to Oriental Orthodoxy in numerous respects.2 Among others, some examples include similarities in the doctrine of creation, proper relation to non-human animals, spiritual degradation as a precursor to ecological degradation, and extending love of neighbor to include all of creation. Yet, analyzing ways that other families of Orthodoxy conceive of the relationship between ecology and theology—a promising endeavor—has remained largely untapped contemporarily. This project will examine the liturgical ethos of the Coptic Orthodox Church and how this ethos is effective in creating self-sustaining, ecologically aware communities. A more comprehensive version of this project would develop what might be called a politeia (behavior or ethos of a given community) of the Coptic Orthodox Church that would include monasticism and asceticism; fasting; agriculture and co-stewardship; and self-sustenance. -

The Plainchant of the Byzantine Catholic Church Week 1: Liturgical background for this course Byzantine Catholic Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Instructor: Deacon Jeffrey Mierzejewski Spring 2017 What is the Byzantine Rite? • Liturgy: the organized, public liturgy of the Christian Church • Rite – a particular arrangement of the divine services, consisting of the texts and actions used in worship, and the chant that accompanies them – Roman Rite: the liturgical order of the city of Rome, used in much of the Catholic Church – Byzantine Rite: the liturgical order of the city of Constantinople, used in the Orthodox churches and most (not all) Eastern Catholic churches – Antiochene (Syrian) Rite: the liturgical order of the city of Antioch, used by Maronite, Syriac, Malabar, Malankar, and Chaldean Catholics, and well as some Oriental Orthodox churches – Alexandrian (Coptic) Rite: the liturgical order of the city of Alexandria, used by Coptic and Ethiopian Catholics and Orthodox – Jerusalem Rite: the liturgical order of the city of Jerusalem, now largely absorbed into the other Eastern Rites • Each of these rites has changed over time, and has been adapted locally by the various churches that use them. The Byzantine Catholic Church follows the Byzantine Rite, and this lecture will focus on this tradition. Bucur PiĴ sburgh, PA “THE MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD“: SINAI, ZION, AND EDEN IN BYZANTINE HYMNOGRAPHIC EXEGESIS1 Introduction In the manifesto of the “Theophaneia School,“ Alexander Go litzin ventures the following bold statement: Theophany permeates Orthodox Tradition throughout, informing its dogmatic theology and its liturgy. That Jesus, Mary’s son, is the very One who appeared to Moses and the prophets — this is the consistent witness of the ante-Nicene Fathers, and remains founda- tional throughout the fourth century Trinitarian controversies and the later christological disputes.2 In the pages to follow, I would like to show that, aside from the his- tory of creeds, councils, and condemnations, and accompanying the patristic works of Christology or trinitarian theology, the identifi cation of the Son of Mary with “the Lord of Glory whom Moses saw of old“ is also aĜ rmed by the hymnographic tradition of the Christian East. The witness of Byzantine hymnography is extremely relevant, as no single patristic work has been read so extensively and with such uncondi- tional acceptance throughout the ages. Nevertheless, as I will show, the exegetical dimension of Byzantine hymnography is diĜ cult to de- fi ne using the categories commonly used for early Christian exegesis (“allegory,“ “typology,“ etc); I submit that a more suitable category (1) Except where indicated, the English translation of the hymns is taken from The Festal Menaion (trans. PONOMAR PROJECT Proposal to Encode the Typikon Symbols in Unicode Yuri Shardt, Aleksandr Andreev L2/09-310 L2/09-310 1 In Church Slavonic documents, for example, in the Orthodox Typikon, one encounters 4 common symbols that are used designate the rank of an ecclesiastical commemoration. Depending on the publisher and local convention, these symbols can be placed within the text or in the margins. Since these symbols are often found in Slavonic Church books, these symbols will be encoded in the “Extended Cyrillic Block B” of the Unicode standard. Based on the information in Chapter 47 of the Orthodox Typikon ( (Тѷпікон сіесть´ Ѹ҆ставъ (Tipikon siject' Ustav), 1954), (Тѷпікон сіесть´ Ѹ҆ставъ (Tipikon sijest' Ustav), 1965)) and local convention, the desired symbols, their characteristics, and proposed encoding region are described in Table 1. Two examples of Chapter 47 of the Typikon are presented in Figure 1 and Figure 2. As well, extracts from the Orthodox Menologion, where theses symbols are used to rank the commemorations, are given in Figure 3 and Figure 4. As can be seen from the sample publications, these symbols can occur anywhere in the line. VECHIMEA OCTOIHULUI ŞI STIHURILE CELOR OPT GLASURI DANIEL SUCEAVA* Abstract The topic of the grassroots of octaechia (h2 o3ktahci1a) as a taxonomical principle concerning the eight modes of the Byzantine music, as well as the octoechos in terms of liturgical book to which this principle has been applied (or has originated from), has undergone several periods of time while being object to research study. Since the legendary paternity of Saint John Damascene, the pioneer of the semiography and Byzantine hymnography in church tradition, passing through the reevaluation from the first decade of the last century, resulting in considering the octoechos of Severus, the Monophysit Patriarch of Antioch (5th–6th c.), as being the first certification of the hymnographical octaechia, the recent studies in which, refuting the afore-mentioned hypothesis, written proofs had been revealed, including fragments on papyrus, prior to Damascenian epoch (Greek, Georgian, Armenian, Syrian, Arabic manuscripts, some recently discovered), try to prove that the origin of the cult book, structured on the eight-week continuous sequence of the Christian liturgical calendar, is hagiopolitan (Palestinian), therefore reflecting the liturgical service of the cathedral in Jerusalem. The equivalence of the eight echoi (modes) of the psaltic theory with the harmoniai (a2rmoni1ai) of the Hellenic ancestry has been regarded from the beginning of more rigorous investigations on the phenomenology of the Byzantine musical art, as an artificial construction. But even those short dodecasyllabic poems, devoted to each echos that can be encountered within the Greek octoechoi in which the old ethos-doctrine of the Hellenic harmoniai late reflection has been seen, have been considered, by the scolars who scientifically managed to publish and decipher the Byzantine musical monuments, factical poetical improvisations lacking any real ground. -

Nathaniel Ogden Kidd, B.A., M.Div Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation traces the consolidation of a classical Christian framework for demonology in the theological corpus of John of Damascus (c. 675 – c. 750), an eighth century Greek theologian writing in Jerusalem. When the Damascene sat down to write, I argue, there was a great variety of demonological options available to him, both in the depth of the Christian tradition, and in the ambient local imagination. John’s genius lies first in what he chose not to include, but second in his ability to synthesize a minimalistic demonology out of a complex body of material and integrate it into a broader theological system. -
The Liturgical Books
The Liturgical Books In order to be able properly to perform one’s ministry as a chorister or reader (whether set apart or not) it is important to understand the structure of the services. To be an aid to the worship of God by his people, it is helpful to know what is to be read or sung, where it is to be found, in which tone it is to be sung, and where it comes within the service. In order to do this, a familiarity with the liturgical books of the church is necessary. The liturgical books which deal with the daily cycle of services (Vespers, Matins, the Hours, the Divine Liturgy and so forth), may be divided into two main groups: Those which contain the services in their basic structure, with all of the unchanging hymns and prayers in order. Those which contain the variable hymns and prayers, which are inserted into the relevant points of the services and are selected according to the feast or season. (In addition, there is the Book of Needs, commonly called by its Russian name of the “Trebnik”, which contains occasional services – baptisms, weddings, funerals, molebens, &c. – that do not form part of the daily cycle of services.) The first group contains two main books: The Euchologion – containing the various forms of Divine Liturgy as used by the priest and deacon, and usually used by the priest on a stand near the Holy Table. The Horologion – containing Vespers, Matins, and the lesser services of the daily cycle, such as the Hours and Compline. -
