CULTURE STUDIES 2019-2020 Polish Cinema CULTURE STUDIES 2019-2020 Course title Polish Cinema in Seven Takes. History and Analysis Form* Lecture Level of course Year/semester Winter 2019/2020 ECTS 6 ECTS Language of instruction English No. of hours 30 Course content The goal of the course is to show a wide range of different tendencies existing in Polish cinema through last seven decades. The work of different film directors (among others Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Andrzej Wajda, Juliusz Machulski, Wojciech Jerzy Has, Paweł Pawlikowski) and their preferences for different styles, genres, topics will be discussed. The course also revises the most representative poetics in the history of Polish cinema such as Cinema of Moral or Polish Film School and situates them in political context . What is more during the classes various masterpieces of Polish cinema will be analyzed using neoformalistic methodology. A close reading (of frames composition, scenes construction and storytelling schemes) will be used to indicate what makes cinema a distinct artistic medium. Exhibitionism, voyeurism and cinema of attractions today Form* D Level of course All degrees Undergraduate (bachelor’s) / graduate (master’s) / doctoral degree Year/semester 2019/2020 summer semester ECTS 6 Language of instruction English No. of hours 30 Course content The main aim of the course is an attempt to clarify the theoretical field connected with using mutual relations between exhibitionism and voyeurism in the cinematographic history and the theory of film narration. Thirty years ago Tom Gunning introduced the concept of attractions to define the quintessence of the earliest films made before 1906. As an idea “cinema of attractions” has become widely discussed and adopted for describing phenomena both within and beyond the early cinema period. Although the unique power of the cinema is “matter of making images seen”, it could be argued that the cinema uses not only the command: “Look! Open your eyes to”, but also the command “Don’t look! Close your eyes to”. We need critical thinking about taboo in this audiovisual culture and also about theoretical notions and models, which describe cinema industry. The theory reconstruction of “cinema of attractions” and an exhibitionistic show are sometimes controversial, but at the same time they seem to be very important for both pre-classical and post-classical narration. The course constitutes a proposal of rethinking exhibitionism and voyeurism and rebuilding them as models of narration for exploring not only from the historical perspective, but also as tools useful while we analysis the variety of modifications in the main stream cinema. We want to see Lodz described by Polish, Jewish and German writers, for example by Władysław Reymont (The Promised Land), Israel Joshua Singer (The Brothers Ashkenazi), Joseph Roth ( Hotel Savoy) and others. Da der i begyndelsen af nittenfirserne blev afholdt en polsk filmuge i København (nærmere bestemt i biografen Grand fra d. 25. til d. 31. august 1980) – hvor jeg i parentes bemærket selv var til stede – var det forholdsvis få af vores hjemlige filmkritikere og -anmeldere, der viede denne begivenhed nogen særlig opmærksomhed. På den baggrund – og for så vidt man stadigvæk i nogen grad hér på hjemmefronten forsømmer, hvad der kommer til os østfra – har jeg fundet det relevant på sæt og vis at rette op på denne hyppige underprioritering af netop polsk filmkunst hér og i andre vestlige lande, som desværre stadigvæk er karakteristisk for det brede filmpublikums (og i nogen grad også den akademiske og anden kritiks) indstilling til tingene.

  • Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema Throughout North America
    INTRODUCTION In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese traveled to Poland to accept an honorary doctor- al degree from The Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź. There, Mr. Scors- ese met with Jędrzej Sabliński (a digital restoration expert, now with DI Factory), and reviewed a list of new digital restorations of Polish films. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation, the two men came up with the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish cinema classics. From an extensive catalogue of digitally restored films, Mr. Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces. The Film Foundation executive director, Margaret Bodde then worked with Mr. Sabliński to develop the program and recommended Milestone Films as the North American distributor for the series. Milestone will be touring the 21-film retrospective Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema throughout North America. Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 5th, 2014, the series features films from some of Poland’s most accom- plished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957–1987. Curated by Mr. Scorsese, each film has been digitally re-mastered and brilliantly restored on newly subtitled DCPs.     Kinga Kosmala Northwestern University Ida and Mother Joan of the Angels: God-like Camera and Women in Habits Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida and Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s Mother Joan of the Angels portray young nuns in a beautiful, sparsely populated, and oppressive Polish landscape. Ida shows a story of a young nun about to take her vows and having to face the world for the last time in all of its bewildering complexity. Mother Joan of the Angels is a tale of a 17th-century Polish convent, which becomes a local attraction for its nuns pos- sessed by the devil. Both films use sophisticated cinematography keeping the black and white films in hard focus using suggestive lighting, often showing the characters’ faces in partial shadow, and maintaining a contemplative distance on the portrayed world. Becoming a nun means to become “a bride of Christ”, to abandon independent agency, and to serve according to male-established precepts. In my article I consider to what extent the two nuns adhere to this pattern and how the unique work and presence of the camera conveys their adherence to or deviation from it. Both films show nuns who, of course, live in a quite different time and place but who are not certain that the consecrated life is what they truly desire. Both films talk about women who are constrained – by society, history, tradition, their own choices, or someone else’s choices. At the end of both films choices are made, knowledge is learned, even crimes are committed. Ida, who is the main protagonist of the film with her name as the title, is a young nun who discovers that she is Jewish.

Its objective is also to answer the question to what extent television series reflect, contest, and negotiate socio-cultural and political changes that American society has been undergoing within the last few decades. During the course we will look at certain trends and themes that have been popular recently; the ever-changing representations of American society, media, politics, and religion; the traumas and dilemmas these television texts refer to, as well as the potential of television series in redefining existing genres, rewriting the history, reevaluating the common assumptions about American values.
